Fred responded quickly with a fair estimate. I have been in the remodeling business 10 years and was looking for a new electrician to service my rental properties and remodeling jobs. Fred is the best electrician I have encountered. He is extremely knowledgeable and his standards for his work quality are extremely high. He replaced a total of 16 switches, outlets, and GFCI’s. He installed 2 new electrical boxes, one through a block wall. He replaced 2 breakers in the main box when he noticed that one breaker was not in code compliance. He carefully checked his work before he left to make sure everything worked and guaranteed all the work he performed. He accomplished all this high quality work in just over 3 hours. In summary, Fred is the best electrician and problem solver when it comes to electrical issues, that I have worked with. Fred will be my regular electrician from now on.

There are no words to totally describe all the talent this humble perfectionist holds. Marcus has been working with us on restoring a older home throughout for the last four months...and each and every project was above and beyond perfection. We are almost sad that our endless projects are over...but want others to experience his quality workmanship!! 2005 plank porcelain throughout with all the proper prep work to level and seal the floors...baseboards and trim work too! Addition of master tile walk in shower...including plumbing, framing sealing. Installation of vanities mirrors lighting closet systems. The look is straight out of Houzz...he has exceptional taste in helping select materials and yet maintain budget costs. (or let you choose a color he is not fond of!!) Carpentry throughout was exquisite as he moved through the home with us tackling each and every item with ingenuity and expertise. It IS all the small things in life that really count....and we were so thrilled to find that with Marcus on the project...we didn't need to call in any additional companies to get the job finished. His wife Vivian who also is a perfectionist came to assist in all the construction clean up, detail painting and staging....they are quite the ultimate team! I have worked with many many contractors over the years and no one can compare....if he is available to quote to perform work on YOUR project....look no farther.... in fact JUMP on the chance! I have him on speed dial for any upcoming projects on Sanibel....and it is our pleasure to recommend him ...if you are lucky enough to find that he is available to do your project...hire him on the spot! Blessing to you and Vivian as you go forward Marcus...making customers happy, homes beautiful and collecting life long friendships one job at a time! We are grateful for our "chance meeting" here on Thumbtack!!

Tim came out within 3 hours of initial contact and assessed the job. As we suspected, the water heater was shot and needed a replacement. I asked him when he might be able to install a new one and he said he could have a new one installed before the end of the day. I was surprised, but accepted. Tim went back to the warehouse and found our replacement (brand new) and had the old one out and the new one in in less than 2 hours time. Clean, efficient and thoughtful of the owner's needs and budget. I highly recommend him for any plumbing task.

James sent me an quote within a very short time and I accepted his quote. The job was done in less than 24 hrs of my request for a plumber. James put in my new disposal, did some extra plumbing that he saw needed to be done and at my request finished a job that was left undone by another repairman. I honestly feel that if you have been burned before then hiring James will be the best decision you can possibly make. I will definite use him again and recommend him to anyone who ask for a good plumber.

Jeff renovated my master bathroom and laundry room, as well as other smaller projects. He moved walls and plumbing, installed cabinets, did tile work -- pretty much everything other than hanging Sheetrock, painting, and electrical work (my husband did that last bit). His work is impeccable. I never had to ask for him to touch anything up because he saw it and pointed it out before I did! He is laser-focused on his work and delivers stellar results. Highly recommended!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
