I am very pleased with the training my American Bulldog is receiving from Brian. I can see the progress she is making every time Brian teaches her and I new skills to practice. He has such a repoire with my dog and is so patient with her. I would highly recommend using Brian for training services if needed for your dog.

I hired Cliff to help me with my service dog in training, and he was great! Always arrived on time, very professional, and my dog loved him. From teaching my dog how to walk next to my wheelchair, to touching up basic obedience, and helping build her confidence, Cliff gave us the tools we needed to succeed as a team. What I liked most was that he took his time to explain everything, wrote down detailed "homework" for the week for us to work on, and would stay after the hour session to answer any questions I had. He really cares about his clients. I would definitely recommend him!

Canine Coach is wonderful. His knowledge about my dog just from the way I described him over the phone was extremely impressive, to say the least. It got even better when he arrived at my house! He taught me things about my dog I would have never known regarding his behavior and just about dogs in general. He sat down with my roommate and I and addressed all of our concerns, responding with both recommendations and pure knowledge. In addition, his way with my dog was unbelievable. My dog is an adult shelter dog who has displayed aggresive behavior in the short time I have had him and has already improved after my session with Canine Coach (it has not even been a full 24 hours since our session!). He taught me how to properly handle my dog with certainty and confidence and how to approach situations that a dog with a rough past would find threatening. I HIGHLY recommend using Canine Coach for any and all of dog related training and/or behavioral issues!

Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

As the mom of two border collies, I want to make certain my kids are in the best of care. I have an older dog (13) and a rambunctious puppy (9 months). Danielle is responsible, kind, flexible, understands neurotic dog moms and based on the photos I receive from the dog park - fun! A five paw rating from our family!

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

This trainer is the best. We went through his 5 week basic training class with our 9 month old Rottweiler and the results were amazing. He is patient, fun, informative and very knowledgeable about all aspects of dog training and dog health. This is a must is you just purchased a new puppy or have rescued a new dog. If you feel your dog needs some training, this is the man to come to. You will not regret it.

Mona is a natural dog person who has added to her great instincts with lots of education about dogs and dog behavior. She immediately connected with my dog and was patient and also a good leader, and I could tell my pup was more confident and comfortable around her. I would trust Mona with my animals and I would recommend that others trust her, too. Your animals are in good hands with Mona!

Lisa was very impressive not only by her effective training strategies, but also in her efficiency. My 3yr old dog learned several skills (and maintained them!) in just one session with all positive reinforcement techniques. We had tried a cheaper group dog training from a big company before for 6 weeks and didn't get close to the same results we got working with Lisa (plus, it was far less stressful for my dog!) Absolutely would recommend her services!

About

i've always loved animals and I believe they deserve to be happy and be loved. I know sometimes it's hard not to go home to see your pet because work usually gets in the way, which is why i created this page! I want to help out and train dogs basics and be a healthier happier dog. That's my goal and it's pretty much why i stand out from others. What do i like most about my job? making animals feel loved and happy. At the end of the day, I just love putting a smile on the pet and the customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
