Absolute Environmental did a great job cleaning our air vents. They were on time and worked quickly and efficiently to get all of the dust and particles out of our air vents and dryer vent. The price was very reasonable, and even less than I was quoted initially. They also were one of the only companies I found that use an environmentally safe product to disinfect the air ducts, which is really important to me, so you don't have to leave the house when they spray it. I would recommend them and hire them again!

Mr. Ian Crichton of K2 Electric is an extremely knowledgeable professional. I was looking for a company to install a new 40 gallon gas water heater. My old water heater was getting up in age but worked just fine, however I wanted to have it replaced before it started to give me any issues. After receiving estimates from 5 companies, I chose K2 Electric. I am satisfied with my decision to hire K2 Electric. Mr. Crichton was very responsive in answering my questions. He brought the water heater along with all of the necessary materials needed for the installation. He provided a quality installation and I am confident that the water heater will perform properly. I have already taken several showers since the installation and I couldn't ask for a better hot water heater. Please do not hesitate to hire Ian Crichton and K2 Electric, he is a hardworking professional who takes pride in his craft. I am satisfied with his service. I have included a picture of his work/installation.

Excellent experience. Francois Cedenos called within an hour of my posting on Thumbtack. He made an appointment to stop by that afternoon to take a look at my job - which was to replace an aging Air Conditioner. I ended up having him replace both my A/C and my Hot Water Heater. His pricing was reasonable, and the payment schedule of 50% deposit, 25% when the job was done, and 25% when the County Inspection was complete was very fair and reasonable. All staff members, the Office Manager Carlos, and the two installers were professional, hardworking and focused. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who asks. Very pleasant experience.

Alfredo came in behind a large company that told me that I needed a new air conditioner and ripped me of by charging me for refrigerant gas I didn't need. Alfredo diagnosed the problem quickly that I had a dirty coil that needed cleaning and showed me that you could not accurately measure the fluid level with a dirty coil. That was further proof that the large company with many trucks on the road was a ripoff. I was charged a fair price for the coil cleaning and will you use Comfort Air again when my A/C needs arise.

It always happens when the temperature breaks a record high. On the hottest day my air conditioner decided to stop working. I called Joseph Air Conditioning & Appliance and they were able to squeeze me in that evening. Ronel came ahead of time - calling to make sure it was okay with me - and had it working in no time. It was repaired on the spot for a reasonable price. I was very satisfied with the service and will be sure to use Joseph Air Conditioning & Appliance in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
