"Judge Rob was our officiant for our June 24th wedding at the Delray Sands Resort in Highland Beach, Florida. He arrived early to review all the ceremony procedures, and he incorporated all the unique ideas we requested to make the ceremony special to our love story. He was very personable and kind to our guests. Many people said how much they enjoyed talking to him at the cocktail hour. If you are looking for a reliable officiant who will make your ceremony memorable, Judge Rob is the person to call. We couldn't be happier with his services. Thanks, Rob!!"

"Kit was great! We found him a month before our wedding. We were doing a backyard wedding without a wedding planner and he helped make it as smoothe as possible! We forgot the rings inside the house and Kit helped break the ice during a tense moment and guided us to see the uniqueness of the story! Very professional and very kind!"

"Angel was so amazing. He was completely understanding of the type of ceremony we wanted. He did not try to push any of his ideas or beliefs onto us; he listened to what we wanted and performed a beautiful ceremony. He arrived perfectly on time, waited patiently for everything to start and for us to get our license organized, and was very helpful when it came to letting the groom and groomsmen know what to do. He answered every email right away and always kept in touch. He was available to chat over skype as well. I would use him again and again :)"

"Stephanie was great as our wedding officiant! She was very professional and dedicated to making this a special day for us. She listened to us and incorporated things that we wanted into our ceremony effortlessly. It was absolutely beautiful. She was there to answer last minute questions and remind us to get our marriage license (which we may have totally overlooked had it not been for her!). She made so many revisions until the outcome was absolutely perfect! Thank you for your hard work Stephanie!!"

"Rev. Steve preformed our wedding at Gulfstream Beach it was absolutely wonderful! He went way above and beyond to accommodate our wishes. He made sure everything went well and was like part of our family. We are already recommending him to our family members that are planning their wedding within the next year. We would have given him 10 stars but 5 was the highest rating."

"I couldn't have asked for a better wedding officiant. He was professional, on time and funny. Rafael sat down with us the night of the rehearsal and got to hear our story. I gave him an outline of the elements I wanted to include in the ceremony with free reign to customize it around those elements and boy did he come through: he even managed to include my favorite musical in the ceremony 😀 In the end, my husband and even my father were crying and I was just holding it together to keep my make up intact. You can go wron hiring Rafael as your wedding officiant."

"My husband and I were so blessed and happy to have had Rabbi Melinda officiate our wedding. She is a very warm, sweet, kind, and interesting person. She truly went out of her way to make our wedding details perfect. She was knowledgeable with regards to planning out all of the details of a Jewish wedding, enabled us to personalize the ceremony with our own details, and she went to great lengths to make the signing of our ketubah-Jewish marriage contract perfect and beautiful. She was flexible with our wedding date and time, and showed up smiling, up-beat at 5:30 AM for our sunrise ceremony. She didn’t even complain about the the small rain shower we encountered, but had only positive and reassuring remarks. She even shared some photos and a video of our day with us. I don’t think we could have picked a better wedding officiant. Rabbi Melinda did a fantastic job and we highly recommend her!"

"Keith was an absolutely amazing asset and essential part of our ceremony. He was thorough, thoughtful, and incredibly well organized. Not only was he helpful in the planning and discussions leading up to our wedding, his presence and demeanor day of and throughout the ceremony was nothing short of perfect. Keith is a very versatile and professional individual. He can be serious and professional, while also being the life of the event and humorous when the time is right. Our wedding would not have been the same without him. I would highly recommend Keith's services to anyone looking to fill such an integral role in their ceremony. With much love and respect to Keith, thank you! Tim & Kelsey Lucas"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
