For the past year Douglas has been tutoring me in Statistics and Economics as I work toward my MHA. He has also helped my daughter with her high school math courses. He was the best tutor I could have asked for and I highly recommend him!

Jennifer Young (Seeds of Knowledge Tutoring) tutored my son, Mark, for the SATs. We were so happy that we found Jennifer! First, she connected well with my son, despite his initial reluctance to even receive tutoring. She is very positive and it is obvious that she really cares about her students. Next, the lessons and homework Jennifer provided were great - she tailored her teaching to Mark's needs - she didn't just stick to the test prep book. Finally (and perhaps most importantly), she helped Mark raise his score by 210 points (on the 1600 scale), which is going to give him a strong college application AND a Bright Futures Scholarship! We would recommend Jennifer (Seeds of Knowledge Tutoring) to anyone!!

My 11 year old daughter has been taking Spanish lessons from Alicia for over a year now. Alicia is an excellent teacher who is very good at teaching kids. She has a lot of experience teaching all ages of kids from elementary to college level. My daughter thoroughly enjoys her Spanish lessons with Alicia. Before Alicia, my daughter was able to write Spanish but wasn't very fluent in conversing in Spanish. After a year of lessons with Alicia, she is able to converse in Spanish very well. Her lessons are fun and very interactive. Alicia is also a very talented artist and my daughter enjoys the occasional art lessons she has with her. I would highly recommend Alicia to anyone was is looking for a Spanish teacher.

Great lessons! Very pleased! My kid has advanced in math at school and now gets better grades. Dahee has lots of patience, she is very thorough. She brings her own material - a folder with work sheets. She has vast knowledge of what is being taught in school. She also rewards after each lesson and progress. She has great base of understanding learning methods, children, how they learn and how they get motivated. Great teacher, highly recommended!

A year ago we made the decision to hire a tutor for our daughter, who was heading into the 3rd grade and was still reading at a Kindergarten level. Even though she was getting one-on-one attention and was on an IEP at her school, we did not seem to be making any improvements in reading. When Meg started working with us, she went back to basics, with letter sounds and combinations and essentially started over with the reading process. Our daughter has worked with her consistently twice a week and the difference in this one year has been amazing. She is now reading Level 2 reading books, sounding out words and beginning to write sentences with the words she has learned. Mid-way through tutoring we moved to online tutoring, which I was a little leery of, but our daughter loves it. Adding the computer into the mix seems to contribute an element of fun to the whole experience. We will continue to use Meg to support our daughter's learning experience and I can't recommend her enough if your child is struggling and you feel like they are falling further and further behind at school.

I started my fourth grader with his tutor because he was failing everything after moving to a new school. The next report card he had 1 B and the rest C's. Heather found a great tutor for him,Pam, that developed a wonderful relationship with him. We will be starting again in the fall when school starts. I can't recommend them highly enough!

Mrs. Davis tutored my young son in elementary math. She explained the school work in his terms so that he understood the concepts. Having the tutor made homework less stressful for us as parents. She explained the processes in terms that he understood easily and the reinforcement she provided was very exciting going forward.

*** A Life Saver *** Long story short; my Previous Tutor cancelled on us at the last min and I needed a Tutor for the ACT College Exam for my son and Fast. I sent out a desperate plea for help on Thumbtack and I was not interested in " Online Tutors", as they were the only ones available since the ACT & SAT test were a few weeks away. Marlene responded to my Request within a hour and said she would be more than happy to help my son. She was able to squeeze him into her schedule and help. I was so relieved and thankful. After talking to her on the phone we manage to arrange a schedule that would work for both of us. Marlene specializes in ACT/SAT college entrance exams and met us at our local library . After a brief in person interview, she started promptly working with my son. Marlene knew exactly how to work with him; he is a 12th grader and will be applying to college this school year. After their session, we discussed what he learned. It was the first time I have ever seen him so excited about Math before. He told me how Marlene showed him shortcuts, and other tricks to find the answers to the questions on the test. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and would highly recommend Marlene as a tutor. She is very pleasant, well prepared, smart, and knows how to motivate a child. Thanks again Marlene !! Ken B

Svetlana Cheskidova is a wonderful teacher! Not only she has extensive knowledge of Mathematics but also tremendous patience and excellent teaching skills. Before we met Svetlana, my son Vladimir was struggling with Math, he didn't like it and didn't feel confident taking tests. After having just a few lessons with Mrs. Cheskidova, Vlad not only did great on his ACT and SAT tests, but started to love Math! He would come home excited to do his Calculus homework! Now Vladimir is a Brown University student thanks to Svetlana's tutoring. I would highly recommend Svetlana Cheskidova to anyone who needs help with any level of Math.

Gail Norris taught my two boys piano when they were in first grade. She did an excellent job; she was encouraging and patient with them as they were so young. They took lessons until they were in sixth or seventh grade. My eldest boy, who is now 22, still enjoys playing it relaxes him. My youngest boy, who is 20, will sit at the piano occasionally; reading music and sitting still were never really his forte. Still Mrs. Norris was patient with him and his abilities grew. Once in elementary school he played in front of the whole school and it gave him such joy! If you are considering piano lessons for your child I whole-heartedly recommend Mrs. Norris, so happy to have found her and to have had her in my children’s lives, it helped shape them as they are today and I think it helped them in school too! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
