After having my initial event date change, I was worried about hiring a caterer on this site. :/ Actually, our original caterer canceled on us at the last minute, so we gave thumbtack a shot anyway. Chef Jose was quick to reply, and gave us the lowest quote out of the 4 we received. I told him about the bind we were in, and he ultimately told me that that they could make it happen. Chef Jose was easy to talk to and created a list of all of our preferred menu options. Surprisingly enough, he even took note of our favorite restaurants in the area, which I personally think was quite a touch of class. The following morning, Chef Brian called me to inform he had produced 3 menus based on Jose's notes, which appeared in my inbox to discuss. I was beyond amazed as Chef Brian scheduled a tasting at my request the following evening. My son and 2 of his friends, along with my wife and I, arrived to Chef Jose's office and were so impressed as soon as we walked in. The kitchen was all stainless steel, immaculately sanitized, and the tasting area was all set. Chef Brian arranged dish after dish, while Chef Jose described each and gave us a run down of how they would be executed at our event. They even offered us wine and champagne, as well as plenty of treats and items they had been working on earlier in the day. We literally felt like we were recording for a cooking show as both chefs featured some amazing French cheeses and their eclectic collection of different preserves! Oh, and the maple bacon popcorn!!! Oh, em gee...We were totally blown away, and felt so lucky to have our original caterer cancel on us for a more lucrative event. These guys rock!!! Totally seems like this team treats their work like fun as they are so passionate with their menu ideas, personable with their manners, and affable with their warmth for their clients. After how they took care of us, I couldn't help but to write such a thorough review. I highly recommend Chefs Jose & Brian from Dade County Food Group, and will insist that my friends have their functions catered by them, too.

Let me start by saying that this was a last-minute plan that I made the day before Valentine's Day. I made a request through Thumbtack and in a very short time Chef Ricardo contacted me to confirm he was available and provided his menu and price. I called him and he went through in more detail his menu and suggestions based on our food preference. He has a lot of menu offerings by the way in varied cuisines. I could tell that he was friendly and professional just by talking to him. Meeting him in person confirmed my assumptions. He was an absolute pleasure to have in our home. He did a really fun cooking lesson with us while he was prepping the meal. He started by making fresh mango margaritas which he served at the beginning and then he showed us how to make the appetizer, entree and dessert, and we had some 'hands on' too with making crepes. He prepped our dining table and served our meal. The food was beautifully plated and most importantly it was delicious! While we ate, Chef cleaned up our kitchen and dishes. We will definitely use him again for special occasions and would highly recommend him. Thanks Chef for making this Valentines one of the most special ever!

My son had the opportunity to cook with Chef Deb. What an experience. He was so focused and loved it. What a great experience. If your child is interested in this they would love it. The next day we bought a pasta maker. We are looking to do it again.

I hired Chef Robyn Almodovar at first to cater my daughter's 1st birthday. Her staff was very prompt and organized. They had total control of the party which was great for me. We had passed appetizers as well as mini stations set up around my house and the food was to die for. Fresh, vibrant, fun, and most of all delicious! Since than we have hired Chef Robyn for a personal cooking lesson party...let me tell you how much fun that was, and small dinner parties. My family and I consider Chef Robyn as our personal chef....she just doesn't know it yet.

We took a bread baking class with Ana and had a wonderful time. She taught us a lot but beyond that, you can tell that she does this because she absolutely loves it. From bringing her grandmothers recipes to encorporating all of our favorite ingredients, she made the experience fun as well as productive. She has given us tips and pointers before and after the class as well and truly cares about her clients. A+ for sure. We can't wait to take our next class and I've recommended her to everyone I know that loves to cook.

Moira was amazing! She did a interactive cooking lesson for myself and my partner as a valentine's day surprise. We had oysters and mignonette to start, fresh halibut with fresh truffle grated over the top paired with celery root puree and endive, and a divine flour-less chocolate cake for dessert. She worked around our complicated dietary restrictions without blinking an eye and cleaned everything up before she left. I happily recommend her!

Nicholas was a great teacher and very flexible with scheduling. The day of my lesson he had everything ready to go and prepared some interesting recipes based on my requests. Nicholas showed me how to make a few sauces from scratch. He also showed me how to use chicken in three different and delicious preparations. We used the skin to make chips, the meat to make a scrumptious stir fry and the bones to make a stock. In addition, he showed me how to make a pork belly dish in the oven because I mentioned how much I loved bacon. I think the mark of a good teacher is when the pupil is able to reproduce what they have been taught. I was definitely able to reproduce Nicholas' stir fry dish, using the tricks he'd shown me to create a meal my family enjoyed...even the picky eaters. It was a wonderful experience.

Laura was delightful!!! Very flexible to work with and was great with teaching and encouraging my 12 and 14 year old boys on cooking lessons and making it fun for them. It was like having my mom in the kitchen with us, very relaxed and the food was absolutely delicious!

I received cooking lessons from Chef Dennis and he taught me in a way that was easily understood. I have now used his lessons in all my cooking techniques. He used the finest quality foods. I am able to make meals that I thought I would never be able to make as he taught me step by step. He was a pleasure to work with and very knowledgeable. VERY SMART INVESTMENT !

I tried several diets and detoxes, but nothing lasted and I always ended up reverting to my old ways as far as eating goes. Kristen coached me on how to prepare foods I like , but modified for my health, and without sacrificing taste or flavor. Now I can shop and choose foods without spending hours in the grocery store aisles reading labels; she cut to the chase and taught me just to eat whole and clean. She prepared foods for me that were in my comfort zone, and introduced me to new foods with amazing benefits and new flavors. I see the difference in how I feel and it's an added bonus when she randomly tries a new recipe or surprised me with her homemade chocolates.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
