Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Shaun is very knowledgeable and professional. He was super nice and very up front about everything regarding our roofing job. The financing they offer is very convenient and affordable. We had some issues with the actual crew that did our roof, they apparently were a new crew to his company and he was not happy with them either but he took care of the problems immediately and we were overall very satisfied. We would recommend Roofing Pioneers!

Chris promptly responded to my inquiry on thumbtack, and was out to look at our roof that day. His price was fair, and he scheduled to come back three days later. He arrived at the time he said he would, fixed the roof, and provided a receipt documenting a year warranty. I would definitely recommend him. ***UPDATE*** We sold the house in November and provided the receipt/warranty to the new homeowners. The roof repair started leaking again in the exact same place where Chris had repaired it. The new homeowners called, but Chris did not honor the year warranty with the new home owners. We contacted him directly and he said that the warranty was non-transferable, which he did not mention when we hired him. And really - its the same exact roof/repair job. I don't see how the owner of the house has anything to do with standing by the quality of the repair. I would no longer recommend him.

I wanted to add as what I liked best Value and Punctuality. JP came out to do my estimate within 1 day, and the job was completed in one morning within 2 days of estimate. The repairs were explained so that I knew the what and why of each one (there were several). And all repairs were photographed before, during, and after. I will definitely use JP Mass for any future roofing needs.

I got a quote from Chris after he looked over the roof. I was able to hire him for the project and he scheduled the work for the following week. Chris arrived when he said he would and started the job. He found more damage once he removed the shingles. He got in touch with me and sent pictures. I was able to see the extras and ok the extras. Chris got the extra materials and completed the job. VERY HAPPY!

They were very responsive and professional from start to finish. They showed up exactly when they said they would. They did an inspection in the attic and on top of the roof, let me know my options and what their recommendations were. They finished quickly too. I was sent pics of the before, during and after the repair. Work comes with a warranty. I took a chance and was just blown away by the customer service. From the first interaction to follow-ups to follow through was first class. If you care about quality service and dealing with honest folks, trust me and look no further. Having dealt with various contractors for miscellaneous things, this experience is definitely in the top two. I HIGHLY and I stress HIGHLY... RECOMMEND!
