I've had Al install recessed lighting in 3 areas in my home. He does a great job, cleans up afterwards and has reasonable prices. I plan to hire him for more renovations to my home.

Jorge fixed leaks on old existing porch. He did such a great job, i hired him to repair roof at my daughter's house. He is very respectful, knowledgeable, and offers choices when it comes to the repairs. His price was reasonable for the amount of work required. I would definitely recommend Jorge as a roof contractor.

We hired Jorge to finish our guest bathroom, and it was the best thing we ever did. He was honest, dependable, work very precise and neat, and his prices are not over the top. I am pleased to say, he has since painted our house exterior and will be doing remodel on both our Master Bath, bedroom and the kitchen. I will never use anyone else, and trust me we are picky, we could not find one thing we did not like. Jorge goes above and beyond, and we highly recommend using him if you want a true professional who stands behind his craftsmanship 100%.

We had an excellent experience with Gordon Cash of GC Home Renovations. He not only gave us the lowest price, but established a date and time, provided a follow-up the day before, called 30 minutes prior to showing up (on time), and arrived and told us exactly how he was going to fix/install our gutters and install our ceiling fans. He did a great job. We will certainly use him again.

Lou is an amazing handyman. He is very professional, he came in and assessed the project and provided me with a quote, even though he encountered a lot of issues due to the previous contractors work he still maintained his original assessment and completed the project with professionalism. I will be contacting him again for my future projects for sure and i would advise the next client to do the same.

Over the years I have used many paint contractors. Chris went above and beyond,to restore my 1920’s VRBO rental property it Needed a face lift. The hole neighborhood went crazy over his transformation, of our vintage 1920’s home. Thank you Chris.

Drywall repaired due to water damage from a leaky roof. Without relocating the water heater Larry was able to work around this obstacle, remove and replace the insulation within, hauled away the debris, and leave the wall primed and looking brand new. The only negative I can say is the repair was delayed due to his vehicle being out of commission which he needed in order to bring the repair supplies needed for the job. I definitely recommend you consider Mr Boyd for your next project. Every time I checked in on his progress he would share with me some helpful tips and techniques to use since he knew I do tackle some repairs on my own around the house. Mr. Boyd demonstrated a wealth of knowledge and experience in his field. I will most definitely use him again on future projects that are out of my capability.

We had a remodeling job for my home and had 5 contractors bid the project. Sylvester at Blair Millenium Construction had, without a doubt, the best priced and most detailed bid we received and therefor he was hired.   He provided a detailed schedule and the only time we ran over on the schedule was when I had decided to change something. Even with that change, he finished in no time. I was extremely happy with his work and the final product. If I have another project Sylvester will definitely be our first call.

We will be using mainstream maintenance services for several renovation projects. Communication is great. Hopefully we will get the projects started within the next few weeks. The delay is on my part.

Newley and his crew renovated two bathrooms in my historic home. I feel like I won the lottery when I chose CN Romack Inc. They were professional, prompt, and thorough. I found them to be informative, imaginative, great listeners, and superior craftsmen. Inevitable delays never felt like a burden, and communication was never an issue. The job included refinishing and moving a claw foot tub, electrical and plumbing, installing floor, shower and wall tile, ripping out and replacing woodwork and trim. Fabulous from beginning to end and I recommend their team without reservation.

I feel so lucky! To find good, honest and professional help in the construction industry is hard! I am so thankful that I found Top Dog Construction. The work Santiago did was meticulous and so well done. I hired TDC to redo my kitchen. The site was always kept clean and tidy. I have several projects lined up and it gives me peace of mind that, not only I will be paying a fair price for the work, but that I also have someone to count on to get it done right. Highly recommend!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
