"Dave Smith officiated my husband and I's wedding on August 1st, 2015. He made the ceremony smooth and enjoyable by being light-hearted as it seemed just at the right moments, and being serious also when needed. We did not want too long of a ceremony and Dave Smith did well in keeping it shorter but meaningful. He showed genuine care when giving words of wisdom both from himself and also from the Bible and the Lord. We had a unique problem in that my husband and I were apart right before the wedding. However, Dave Smith was able to Skype both of us and discuss our desires and plans for what we wanted by being very flexible but also giving suggestions. We are delighted with our wedding ceremony experience and are happily satisfied in choosing Dave Smith! "

"Jon provided us with the most spectacular ceremony we could have every asked for. When we initially met with him for our consultation, he was super helpful and very knowledgeable! He made the ceremony planning very easy and enjoyable! Our wedding was 12/27/2015 and I loved how flexible Jon was with our guests, bridal party, and parents, especially since many of our guest did not speak the best English. I honestly could not be more happy with the decision we made to go with Jon as our wedding officiant. The ceremony was the most important aspect of our wedding for me and he made sure that everything ran smoothly and that the ceremony was memorable, and most importantly meaningful. Jon, thank you very much for the service you provided. It was fantastic! "

"We couldn't had asked for a better officiant. My husband and I had planned our wedding at last minute, Elder Herrington went out of his way too help us on our very special day within a 2 hour time frame, late in the evening. He helped us choose a great location for our ceremony and it's a place I will never forget. I was very nervous about how the ceremony was going too end up but it went through smoothly and we even had a few laughs in as well. Herringtons wife even came along and took pictures for my husband and I as we weren't from the area, We eloped. Very friendly, kind people. Glad we choose Elder Herrington. Give him a call!"

"Our Wedding went perfectly thanks to the assistance of Ken Van de North, who handled all the necessary details expertly both for our wedding service which her performed flawlessly and both of our receptions, one for a small immediate family group and the second reception for 100 family and friends. Ken organized and instructed the wedding party in the absence of a costly wedding planner. The organizaton was top notch, the wedding party followed his instructions for a beautiful entrance and intro for the bride. We have many wonderful pictures thanks to his organization skills. Ken asked ahead of time what songs we wished played, what were our favorite songs, did we have "our song", both at the wedding and at the recptions and what the agenda for these events would be. What happened when? Being expereinced he knew that knowledge would help him plan "our perfect wedding" and he did. Ken is very experienced at both wedding services and as a DJ at parties and receptions. We experienced no hitches, or glitches, and would recomment him highly."

"Dear Tom & Marcia, We would like to thank you once again for making our wedding day so very special in every way. You can never tell how things are going to work out when booking so far in advance and so far away from home. We placed our trust in you and you rewarded that trust with a location, ceremony and hospitality that met and exceeded our expectations in every way. We are both delighted and can't wait to share our photographs and memories of the day with our family and friends. We will remember the day forever as we begin this new chapter of our life story as husband and wife. We will gladly give our personal recommendations and endorsement to the service you provide. "I was lucky enough to work with Vincent to design a wedding ceremony a few months ago. He was totally hands-on from start to finish, crafting and editing the ceremony so that it perfectly reflected personality of the couple getting married. As a result of his hard work and his expertise, the bride and groom were both thrilled with the way everything came out. I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for an officiant who goes beyond the standard script and puts your needs first."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
