Jorge is a great guy. He's very willing to explain the whole process and walk you through step by step. He's very informative and understand of different situations. He did it try to sell me a new roof like the others did. Instead he told me that a repair would be just fine seeing as the house and roof were only a year and a half old. He and his team were at the house two days after we initially met and he fixed the damaged area in a matter of hours. It looks as if there was never any damage. He did the work quickly and efficiently and was more than willing to work around my busy schedule. Not to mention his pricing is very fair. I'd certainly refer him to a friend or family member if they ever needed work done!

Andy quoted a reasonable price for an exterior house painting. We are very pleased with the results. He actually was able to paint our house a week earlier than he initially quoted. Andy is very professional and did an excellent job.

What can I say! Be it returning my call or showing up at my house on time.... extremely professional standards. I have dual water heaters out of which one was leaking...Prior to Mermaid engineering, two other plumbing professionals showed up...did not solve the issue...charged me a little over $100 and advised me to buy a new one. I had to spend $680 on a new appliance...but Paul changed the connections, got rid of the leaking water heater, used my second heater and saved me $680! The work was so neatly done. I now have Paul's name on my contacts. I highly recommend mermaid engineering for similar services. It is not because Paul saved me a lot of money, but because he is honest with his opinions and has expert solutions at a very reasonable cost.

James and team installed over 1300 sq-ft of wood-look floor tile in my house over a two week period. I'm extremely pleased with both the quality of the work as well as the professionalism and communication he personally displayed. I would definitely hire him again.

We moved to Florida this year and had several home projects -- building a home office, remodeling a bath to repair an improperly installed toilet, and rebuilding a closet. We were referred to Dave (or Harley, as we call him) and he and his crew did it all, did it well, and did it at a reasonable cost. Highly recommended and we would use them again.

Robert removed the popcorn ceiling from the entire house. Then he prepped, mudded, sanded and caulked then painted where he removed the popcorn. It took 5 1/2 days. He is knowledgeable, on time, and the results were better than I had expected. I will probably use Robert again for future painting..

Great guy, had a list of jobs around the house I wanted to do. With Gregg's fair prices I had him do them all. Even went and got items from Home Depot for me. Will use in future.

Could not have had a better experience. Was here when he said he would be and did an excellent job. Took longer than expected because of unusual construction of flooring and had to buy a new tool from Home Depot. to provide proper installation. Did not request an additional money for his work. And the price could not had been more reasonable. A 10x10 room, a 9x13 room and a 3x3 entry for $350 {I supplied laminate and underlay materials}. Was thoroughly pleased with all aspects of the experience.

Michael was top notch . We bought a house in need of major renovations . I had had issues with other contractors committing to do various projects and they either did not show up for scheduled work , were late or did not complete the job in a satisfactory manner . Michael handled and oversaw everything . He did my roof , installed security cameras , gave me a plumber , installed a tv mount , installed a new picture window and repaired stucco . I highly recommend him and will use him again in the future . Buyer beware of hiring handymen or other people that are not licensed or committed to doing the job to industry standards .

We recently remodeled our entire house and Shawn with Wishbone Custom Tile laid all new tile floor throughout the house, all new bathroom tile in 2 bathrooms, glass blocks in the master shower, stacked stone back splash in the kitchen and stacked stone fireplace. He has a terrific eye for detail and is extremely skilled, we couldn't be happier with his work!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
