June has been my tutor for a few months and has been preparing me for my ASVAB. The very first time we met, June had me work some math problems for her and immediately identified my issues. I feel so much more confident and prepared since working with June. I would highly recommend her for anyone looking to polish up their math skills.

I approached Mr. Reginald Sanders, the owner of Tutor4U online Math Services, about three years ago. I needed assistance with my college algebra, pre-calculus and statistic classes. It had been several years since I attended high school, and my math skills left a lot to be desired. I was so far behind in my class I thought I would never catch up. My Veterans Administration Rehabilitation counselor recommended that I contact Mr. Sander’s services. What I appreciated most about the Tutor4U services is Mr. Sander’s creative ability to simplify the mathematics process to a step-by- step level that made the rules easier to remember. My mathematical skills improved within the first few weeks. Mr. Sanders style of teaching makes learning comfortable for all ages from adults to elementary age. The bonus was all tutoring sessions were held online, and he was always available to answer my questions. His services went beyond my expectation, and as a result, I made “A’s” and “B’s” in my classes. I highly recommend his services to all of my friends and my family. Some of my friends are currently using his services. Queen Mullen, Pensacola, FL

Dalhart is an excellent tutor. Her personalized tests are especially useful. My daughter got the highest level she could receive on the Algebra 1 EOC and I believe it was because of Dalhart's thorough tutoring. We will be using her again!

I am certified to teach in Sarasota. After 9/11, I taught for 1-2 years in a school system in Sarasota. I have decided after consulting in IT -- using language ability, to return to teaching. I am researching opportunities in Sarasota and Santa Rosa counties. I am excellent at communicating with students. I have had my own children who hated school and were not motivated. It may sound trivial, but it actually inspired me to help those students who, for whatever reason, could not find the motivation or had a block when it came to languages. I love languages. I communicate everyday with friends from university and business who live overseas and do not speak English. Listening to a student's perspective is the best starting point to developing a solution that will enable or enroll the student to begin to embrace the possibility of actually accomplishing the challenge at hand. When, as a teacher and tutor, one honestly has a passion for subject matter and an understanding of students struggles, which I do, this positions the teacher or tutor to begin to build an understanding, which then develops to an opening to begin the required meaningful interaction, which is necessary for actual learning, not just parroting, and lost immediately, but to truly absorb content, and in the case of languages, the ability to communicate in that language.

I am currently in the process of getting my English degree at the University of West Florida. I have years of babysitting experience from watching my cousin's and neighbor's children. While I have never tutored officially, I would say that I am qualified to tutor elementary reading and writing -- this qualification being from the summer camps that I volunteered at for the past few years. I love kids and enjoy teaching anyone how to read or write better. It's a wonderful passion that I wish for every child to pick up.

    About

I am passionate about teaching. I work one on one and with small groups of students to ensure that students improve their grades and their learning abilities. I plan all lessons a week prior to teaching a lesson. All materials are researched and geared toward the subject matter that I am teaching to each students. Those materials are sent home with the student to reinforce learning. Parents are advised of progress along with strengths and weaknesses of each student. If a student requires further assistance that I cannot provide, I will try my best to assist those students with appropriate assistance within their local school. I enjoy those moments when a light bulb goes off inside of a student's head. All students are capable of learning and thriving inside and outside of the classroom environment. Students learn at their own pace. No student is pressured or forced to learn something. If a subject matter if too difficult for a student, I will work with parents and teachers to help each student.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
