Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

This is the first time we have ever hired anybody to clean our house and we were having a party on Sunday so this was a last minute request. There were two girls who came out and did a cleaning of our whole house. They were wonderful! They cleaned like I do and I try to get everything, baseboards, cabinets, etc. They worked so hard and I know they had to be tired and did everything until it was complete. We are very happy with their work and will definitely be calling them again. Thank you so much! Jeff and Patty G

Requested a deep clean, interior window clean and asked if the company could clean ceiling fans, knock down cob webs from ceiling and clean baseboards. They quoted me $151 with a free oven cleaning if I booked that same week for my townhouse 2 bed 1.5 bath. I arrived at the end of the cleaning, did a walk though very quickly as they seemed very pressed for time, as they arrived 2 hours after our scheduled time. Upon first glance, things seemed fairly clean. I am not a picky person and trusted the professionals would have picked things up to clean under them and taken care of all the things I requested specifically from them. I paid Erica, which she responded to the price I was quoted, “why does this cost so much? Oh because the interior window cleaning.” They were there slightly over 2 hours -I didn’t get a deep clean, I got toothpaste still on sinks, mirrors, and faucets. Night stands with gunk on them (which I wiped off easily myself after they left) No cobweb removal or fan dusting. I have an interior window that is both sides of it inside- only one side cleaned. My baseboards look cleaned in some areas and totally disgusting in others. not to mention, the free oven cleaning didn’t happen. The kitchen cabinets had not been touched whatsoever nor the top of the fridge, nor things moved to be vacuumed under (see photo) or if you lifted up something in the spare bedroom there was a pile of dust under it. There was cat litter still all over the floor in the space where we had moved the cat litter box away from so they could vacuum it- no one vacuumed it. I contacted Erica, expressing that the things I mentioned had not been cleaned, she agreed to come by in the morning to take care of it- I did not hear anything until almost 2pm. She dusted the ceiling, fan, top of fridge, and wiped SOME of the kitchen cabinets. I was not there to check the place and she said she would come back the next day if there was more she needed to take care of. I don’t expect to play baby sitter or take her through the steps to show her what isn’t clean in the house, I figured she knew we were not happy she would check the rest of the house to see how the cleaners did and take care of it. Also, I have guests arriving, so I can’t have her come the next day. I spent 3.5 hours last night cleaning my house, after working 12 hours and hiring a professional cleaning company to deep clean. I requested a deep clean because I am too busy to take care of this myself and I have visitors arriving to stay in my home. I am highly upset and sick to my stomach that I paid so much for so little.

My husband and I had to move in to be caretakers for my grandparents. He works full time, and I have health issues. Her house has not really been clean for several years. Delma and her crew, went above and beyond what I expected! She truly feels like a God send! The initial deep clean was amazing. I felt they did way more than I expected! Cleaned out the refrigerator, scrubbed the stove, and even straightened up the spare bedroom! And they were fast and very efficient! We definitely decided to do the every two weeks or so, for maintenance. I really have nothing bad to say! I would recommend them to anyone I know!

Tracey was very prompt and professional. She brought her daughter with her and they really have work ethic. 5 stars!!! I really like that they arrive in a company logo on their vehicle and have their company logo on their T-shirt- it shows me they are professionals and serous about their job. The house was cleaned perfectly and the smell they left behind was AMAZING. Also, pricing was fair. Do not hesitate to contact Tracey and her team!

I would give 0 stars if I could. This company does not do what they say. I went on vacation and hired them to do a deep cleaning to a vacant house that we are in the process of buying. I explained exactly what I needed done and what was not important to me. I get a few pictures and asked for payment. I make the payment and get back to find out they did not do a deep clean. Both light fixtures in the bathrooms were covered in dust, the top of the fridge still had melted sticky pops on it from the precious owner, the cabinets were not wiped down, the window sills were still a mess. The only thing I could honestly say that I noticed was the floors were mopped. I contacted the owner and she apologized and stated she would sent someone out that Monday. Monday morning 30 minutes before they were scheduled to come clean again, she texts me that something happened with the cleaners car and she wouldn’t be able to make it. I then asked for a full refund as we were on a tight deadline for painting and moving in. She sent me $100 back and stated she didn’t have the rest of the money, that she had already paid the cleaner. I messaged her 2 days later asking if she had an update on when I would get the rest of the refund. She ignored me. Next day I messaged her again asking her to Venmo me the remaining refund. I was ignored again. Now almost a week later, still no response. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
