Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Inexperienced and unprofessional we hired James to do a tile and grout Cleaning and sealing and They did such a bad job that I ended up paying 4 times more to fix what he did to my floors. I will never recommend them . I'm very upset for the result of a sloppy job and the use of a really bad material.

Tony and his crew did a tile job and carpet install for us. He was very responsive, professional, and when he said he would be there.. he was always there!!! They did a wonderful job on both projects, and paid close attention to detail. In fact, we are already wanting to line him up for another project. Definitely impressed with him as a business owner!!!!

Chris was an absolute pleasure to have in our home. He is extremely professional and did a fantastic job installing the tile for our new bathroom tub/shower. I would definitely recommend him. I have read other other five star reviews about his painting skills and as we own a real estate company, when we need the exterior of a home painted Chris will be doing the work. If you are looking for a kind person who is also extremely talented you just found one.

Will was fantastic!! I had seen two other tile guys earlier in the day, first one said he didn't want to touch the job, second one was extremely rude so needless to say, I was a bit apprehensive while waiting for Will to arrive. He came in and was polite. He offered me a solution, showed me how it works and promised me a 10-year warranty. As this was a brand-new house and the construction tile guy ruined the grout in the entire house, I closed and was unable to move in. Will came the following day and worked well into the evening and my house looks absolutely beautiful, just like it was supposed to look by the builder. He cleaned my floors and then color sealed my grout. He gave me many options and provided samples on my actual grout. Will saved the day and now I am so very happy with my brand-new house since he was able to fix the issues with the flooring. Will was reasonable, professional and beyond kind. Thank you so much Will. I would definitely recommend you to my friends, family and anyone in need! 5 stars does not seem like enough, I would give Will 10 stars if I could.

I hired Robert to install the glass tile backsplash in my kitchen (2 dayjob) and was only mildly impressed upon inspection. On day 1 he arrived as discussed but had problem w his saw so he was unable to start the job or do any work as he had to get or locate a part. Day 2, another issue w the saw and power so work didn't begin until like 2 in the afternoon so only a portion was installed. Some of the pieces were unsat and chipped at the edges. Discussed w him. Day 3 the remainder of the backsplash was installed but we had to wait until the following day to grout. Day 4 grout completed but there were areas where grout was missing or not smoothed out. Chipped pieces as well as the grout issues were discussed w Robert but our conversations seemed to only frustrate him more than anything. I'll admit that I'm a bit OCD but I expect quality work and from the person that I hire and for them to take pride in their work and not to just throw up substandard pieces simply in a effort to finish the job. Therefore, you are interested in professional looking glass tile installation, I would probably look elsewhere. Good from a distance but not up close.
