Chris and his team do excellent work. He's willing to go the extra mile to make sure its done right (unlike many other contractors). I've used him twice and I will make continue to do so anytime I need an electrician.

In a state where every contractor is a lying thief it was a pleasure to work with John. He came on time, fixed my AC quickly and charged me less that half of what any of those other companies charge. I HIGHLY recommend him. Excellent work.

Excellent ! Excellent ! Excellent ! You will never use another plumber once you've used Herb. He was patient , on time, friendly, and finished the job ! My initial request was for a new toilet valve to be installed , as with plumbing sometimes and houses built before 1990 we had many surprises along the way. Herb was the consumate professional . He worked so hard in the rain ... In the dark ... And never complained once ! He's my hero😀 I really don't have words to express my gratitude for Herbs hard work, dedication and pure tenacity ! On top of all that he's a 100% Nice Guy! Please do yourself a favor and call this guy ... You will not regret it.

Marcelo was so easy to work with and he and his crew were very professional besides being top notch painters. I had quotes from several other companies which were all typically more than I Paint USA but choosing to work directly with the contractor himself rather than a big company sales rep was the right decision. Now my neighbors are jealous and my house looks great! Thank you Marcelo.

I had been looking for painters for a rather difficult job and I needed it done ASAP. I needed a 3 bedroom mobile painted that was previously lived in by a heavy smoker, and I needed to have the job done over the weekend. Out of all the contractors that I met, Fabian was the only one that had no issues meeting my needs. Wet met on a Friday and he was at my house the next day on Saturday at 9am. Fabian and his team (Kevin and Alton) were amazing and so professional. The job was done in a day and a half (other contractors said 4 days). They probably would have finished in one day if there weren't any hiccups. Even though there were some issues that arose they were handled professionally and quickly. I found Fabian to be honest and personable and I personally like that in contracters. I Highly, Highly recommend Fabian and his team. You won't be disappointed.

I called Vin to remove a house full of shutters after the Hurricane. I had not known of him before my initial phone call. His price was reasonable and his reviews were all good. We set a time to meet to start the job which he agreed to do with 2 other men. Here is what I got: 3 fine conscientious men who showed up on time, Precision-like meticulous experienced work completed as promised, A price that was honored and not changed at the end, Professionalism and kindness 2nd to none. Dealing with Vin was a 100% stress-free pleasure with no "Hidden Surprises". I wish I could clone Vin and his Handyman Service. It would make life so much better here in South Florida where Vin and his Handyman Service are Truly A Rare Find. Vin offers many home services and I will definitely be calling him in the future and referring him business whenever the opportunity arises. With much gratitude, Benita Koenig, Realtor

Through the years, I have engaged numerous contractors to do a variety of projects: plumbing, electrical, framing, roofing, flooring, windows, HVAC, etc. I have become completely familiar with disappointment. W&B Construction was able to complete a tile job that was left behind from another contractor. Gabriel actually hit his schedule right on! It was very clear what was included in the contract and what was not. Any questions were resolved immediately. He was knowledgeable, honest, dependable, and really easy to work with. His work ethic is undeniable. I am so thrilled with the work he have done. I can't say enough good things about this company: more importantly about Gabriel. What a pleasure to work with them! I would not hesitate to recommend Gabriel to anyone! If you are looking for a great contractor, If you want high quality construction done the right way, the first time: look no further!! The result was the most professional project I have ever witnessed among the 20+ contractors.

Thank you Leo for being honest by telling me and my husband that we only have one layer of shingles on our roof and we could apply a second layer of shingles which you and your team saved us a whole lot of money and you met our spending budget when other contractors told us we had to remove the complete shingles and start by scratch. Leo and he's team was very honest clean and on time. I highly recommend Leo and will use him again.

I needed a bathroom updated fast before putting my house on the market. I had several contractors come in to bid but I felt like they were treating it like just another job and lacked the professional input I desired. Anthony was amazing to work with. He’s incredibly knowledgable, passionate, and professional. My bathroom was completed within the proposed timeframe and budget. I will definately use his services for all my future improvements. I recommend him to anyone looking for an amazing contractor.

Mike was great! At first I was skeptical because I was looking for someone to remove a hot tub and back fill it with concrete, but he shows up as a Plumbing and A/C service. But he gave me an excellent quote and seemed to know what he was talking about and had done jobs like it before, so I decided to hire him. He knocked it out in about 6 hours while I was at work. He even did a little extra work by cutting the concrete where the pool was to make it smooth and straight so I could lay brick pavers. And the icing on the cake?.....he accepts credit cards! I rarely come across self-employed contractors who take credit cards (which is my preferred method of payment), so this was huge for me. Fast, friendly and has a great work ethic. HIGHLY recommend. See photos for before and after.

We provided this vendor 3 very different assignments that required skill sets from several different trades. While the painting task was very straightforward, the tile work and wood planking work required a significantly higher set of skills from the contractor and certain parts of the work called for someone with experience who could do the more difficult cuts and trim in some areas. The work ended up taking significantly longer than expected ( 2 days longer ) but to the credit of the vendor he at no time asked for additional money and even offered to provide a discount because the work was taking longer than he expected ( which was not accepted) . At the end of the day he did a very good job a fair price which is what you expect from a trusted vendor . I deal with contractors on a day to day basis and would recommend that Jobert and his team be on your short list for the right projects . Honesty is a value you cant put a price on and a vendor should be judged not on an easy job but on how he handles a job when he runs in to unexpected issues . Sometimes its easier and less expensive for a vendor to walk away but this vendor chose to do the right thing and make it all right ! . Cudos to Jobert and his team and an "A" for effort .

First, Jhon was very competitive in his price, accommodating to my schedule, and far exceeded what I thought the ceiling could be. I enjoyed working with Jhon and his team. By far exceeded my expectations. I had a house was smoke damaged from years of cigarette smoke. Jhon was able to remove the popcorn ceiling, fix the weak spots in the house, skim coat the ceiling and painted. The house smells new, looks incredible, and I was able to hang ceiling fans. Jhon was very professional, made certain to remove his waste and clean at the end of each visit. I could not have imagined a better contractor to work with. This is going to be my residence for at least ten years, and Jhon was instrumental in making my house into a home for my family. Thank you to Jhon and his team. I'm glad everyday I come home. I will hire you again for the next project.

Honestly, this was my first experience with an inspection in Florida, and Joey was extremely detailed oriented. He got the property at time, and his work was excellent. He gave me a book to learn how to mantain the house, and the same day he made the inspection he sent me the report done. I would be pleased to recommend him to anybody.

It's been a pleasure working with Paul. Finally a contractor that can do the job, while going above and beyond for his clients. His right hand Bonnie is always very helpful and manages projects from their office in Lake Worth. Will work with 'Paul Bennett Builders' again in the future.

It was a daily pleasure working with a contractor that had such integrity, honesty. His aim was to make me happy and regardless of what I needed or wanted he was there for me. I do not have enough words to describe his workmanship. He never missed a day until the job was completed. He is truly a 5 star. I would recommend him to anyone and already have.

We couldn't be happier with the work done by Josh and his team. We had a wet ceiling and mold in our cabinets, and his team came in and not only cleaned everything out, but made it look brand new like there had never been a problem to begin with. They came on short notice, were always on time, and were generally a pleasure to work with, which I don't usually say about any contractors!

Carlos handled building an addition to my home in a very efficient and professional manner. Whatever questions I had he answered, made sure that I knew about all costs, and finished in a timely fashion. I would recommend Muraconstruction all the time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
