My 11 year old daughter has been taking Spanish lessons from Alicia for over a year now. Alicia is an excellent teacher who is very good at teaching kids. She has a lot of experience teaching all ages of kids from elementary to college level. My daughter thoroughly enjoys her Spanish lessons with Alicia. Before Alicia, my daughter was able to write Spanish but wasn't very fluent in conversing in Spanish. After a year of lessons with Alicia, she is able to converse in Spanish very well. Her lessons are fun and very interactive. Alicia is also a very talented artist and my daughter enjoys the occasional art lessons she has with her. I would highly recommend Alicia to anyone was is looking for a Spanish teacher.

Gail is an extraordinary teacher. She is extremely effective at increasing the fluency of her students through conversation and reading. Having lived in and traveled to various Latin American countries, and having taught Spanish at the college level, Gail has both the professional background to rigorously train her students and the practical exposure to the language to ensure that her students learn to properly converse in Spanish. Beyond that, Gail is a joy to be around and is a wonderful mentor.

Ms. Deborah is am amazingly energetic, enthusiastic, warm, caring Spanish teach who clearly enjoys facilitating children's desire to learn, explore, and discover language through play. It is also evident that Ms. Deborah loves to learn herself which I think is extremely valuable in an educator. My 3 year old daughter loved all of her creative activities, songs, books, crafts, costumes, which were always centered around my child's interests that frequently changed. She also taught with food, games, puzzles, and outdoor play.

Lourdes was a dynamic tutor and just a pleasure to work with! Her biggest asset is that she is a native Spanish speaker and brought a high level of authenticity to her teaching. She is very knowledgeable and has been teaching for almost 20 years which is apparent in her effectiveness at delivering the subject matter in a clear way. Aside from that, she has a very easy going demeanor and makes learning Spanish fun and comfortable!

Teo Luz is a very thorough teacher. She definitely knows grammar rules and how to explain them. She shows up at the library well prepared with her grammar books that are used during the two hours. She is fun and interesting to talk to while practicing the language. A very educated person with plenty of knowledge to share. She's read Spanish literature books all her life, so she can share her knowledge of those too.

Maria is an excellent teacher. Not only is her knowledge of English impeccable, but she is fluent in Spanish. Due to the fact that she has been a teacher for many years, Maria is well-equipped to teach young people or children. She taught my son Spanish when he was home schooled, and to this day he has retained and used what he learned with Maria in his high school Spanish classes.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
