I was in a pinch and Farit came through to help me out. I had under 3 hours to get a job completed before an inspection and he was able to get to Home Depot, and to my house to fix an electrical mishap. I will definitely utilize his services in the future. Thank you!

Water kitchen faucet and was stuck on the jet setting causing a water mess. Bought a new one on amazon and my Dad kept insisting he would install it but time passed. Time to get a professional. I went home on home advisor and got a plumbing company who called and stated the trip charge was $59 and no actual price would be determined until the plumber arrived. This was not acceptable to me. I then went on thumbtack and sent pictures and within 10 mins he contacted me with a set price. I agreed and he came the very next day. He was on time and made absolutely no mess. I would hire him for anything in my house.

MMM Flooring is the best - I would definitely recommend (and use again) for any flooring or tile project (big or small). I hired Marcos Alves based on a recommendation from another customer. He was quick to respond to my request for a bid and his price was incredibly competitive - while still maintaining the highest level of quality. Because I was still residing in TX during the install, it was important I hired someone who was responsive & someone I could trust. Marcos Alves is both. He responded very quickly to all of my texts, phone calls and emails. I entrusted him with the keys to my home and he insured it was always secure at the end of the day. He was willing to go out of his way to pick up extra materials that were needed and maintain the receipts for me to pay later. Thus was so helpful as I was not residing in Naples, FL yet. His payment schedule is reasonable and fair. He stands behind his work - which is impeccable. I was so impressed with the quality of his work I hired him to remodel my entire master bathroom which included a shower and bathtub area. I hired him to do the remodel without getting his bid or getting a second estimate because I was that confident in the price he would quote and the quality of the work he would do- and I was not disappointed with either! He was able to handle the plumbing needs as well as install a light above the shower. He also has great ideas & suggestions as to where to purchase various materials. I also needed beadboard be put in the bathrooms and again his skill at woodworking was amazing - he is so multi-talented. He completed the 2400 sq ft of wood like tile floor installation in schedule and to perfection. He even made sure the closets were trimmed out with quarter round to give everything a very finished look. Many of my neighbors stopped by during the 5 week project to see what I was going - and 3 were so impressed they hired him to remodel their bathrooms and install tile throughout their homes! If I could give a 10 star review to MMM Flooring I would - and I am a VERY picky customer who expects perfection. If you hire MMM Flooring you will not be disappointed.

Tim came out within 3 hours of initial contact and assessed the job. As we suspected, the water heater was shot and needed a replacement. I asked him when he might be able to install a new one and he said he could have a new one installed before the end of the day. I was surprised, but accepted. Tim went back to the warehouse and found our replacement (brand new) and had the old one out and the new one in in less than 2 hours time. Clean, efficient and thoughtful of the owner's needs and budget. I highly recommend him for any plumbing task.

Being a fairly new first time home buyer one thing I can appreciate is honesty as I've been mislead by a few companies when it comes to home projects. This company was on time each day and did great work while re-piping my home. Project took two days and there was minimal drywall repair. The quote for the job was more than reasonable and it turned out great. I recommend to anyone who is looking for a reliable plumbing company.

Tyler from Poppy's Plumbing arrived at scheduled time to replace our kitchen sink faucet. After contacting Thumbtack, he was here the next day. He was courteous and very pleasant as he worked expertly to take off the old faucet and sprayer (which had corroded and required sawing off) and replaced with the new ones I had purchased. Very satisfied with his work and will hire Poppy's Plumbing when I need help next time.

Over 10 years ago, Jeff remodeled my kitchen. I was so satisfied that when I purchased a bungalow almost 100 years old, I did not hesitate to contact Jeff. He remodeled the kitchen and bathroom. Both are gorgeous and retain the historic charm. I recommend Jeff without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
