Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

How many singing lessons do I need?

It depends on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your singing lessons. Consult a highly rated vocal instructor to determine how many lessons you should take — and how often you should take them.

Do singing lessons actually work?

Yes, many students who’ve taken singing lessons say that their singing has gotten better. To find out if voice coaches near you have successfully taught others how to sing, read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

Where can you get singing lessons?

You can receive singing lessons from a vocal instructor or voice coach on Thumbtack. Some instructors offer virtual lessons, while others may require you to come into a studio for instruction.

I just finished my first lesson with Micheal this past weekend and I have to say I was very impressed with his knowledge of the guitar, music and music pedagogy as a whole. Micheal’s approach was very focused - I felt like I gained more insight into my technique in one lessor than I did in a month with other instructors, and I definitely am looking forward to future lessons with him.

Lessons with April have been fantastic. You can truly tell that she has a passion for music, singing and teaching. I started lessons to improve my singing and after a few weeks I could already see a big improvement. I would highly recommended her classes to anyone looking to take their singing to another level.

So grateful to have found Phil. Been working with him for about 6 months now. Every lesson has been worthwhile. He is flexible and easy going. It seems he knows all genres of music and is able to cater to everyone’s musical preferences, pace of learning, skill level, etc. Don’t expect miracles from Phil (he does comes close) but do expect to learn useful and awesome tools every session. His cat is awesome too. If for nothing else at least take a lesson to see the ferocious killer!

Dan is a good guitar player. He knows his stuff well. I’ve had 3 or 4 lessons with him. First lesson he was about 45 minutes late, but the next lessons he was only about 10 minutes late so I let it slide no problem. He does a lot of things to make the time go by faster for himself which I dislike (playing music videos on his phone that has nothing to do with guitar, going through papers as if he wasn’t prepared for our lesson) I did buy a tuner off him our first lesson and he tunes my guitars for me before our lesson, but this past time my tuner disappeared and I figured he accidentally took it with him. No big deal mistakes happen, but when asking for it back he got all defensive that he didn’t take it even though I knew it was just an accident. The tuner was definitely something I needed, but he is also very pushy on buying other things that I do not need or already have. We had a lesson today at 6pm and he texted me at 5:02 pm (48 minutes before my lesson?!) that his car was getting fixed and had to cancel. But if I was to cancel it has to be 24 hours before or I get charged a fee?? Hmmm. He texts me again 10 minutes later that he can come at 6 and his car is fixed now. I’m already frustrated at this point about my tuner and the such short notice on cancellation that I tell him not to come. I also read a previous review that he asked someone what they do for a living 5 minutes after entering their home and he did the same with me first lesson before we even sat down to play. Great guitar player, not a good teacher.

I’ve been working with Steve for about 3 weeks now. I had no real practical knowledge about the guitar before and I few i have learned so much in a short period of time. Steve is super talented and patient and understands what type of music I am interested in (blues and rock) so his lessons always tie back into these styles. I’m looking forward to learning more!
