Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Earlando is a real honest, no nonsense electrician. He came into an incomplete home improvement job and not once criticized the previous electrician. In fact, he gave me some advice about my antiquated light fixtures and gave me direction regarding another incomplete project. Stay as you are Earlando, and you will get more clients than you can handle just by word of mouth. He should be your first call!

Company was great at first responding. Then I spoke to the electrician and made an appointment for 1 PM. Went to my rental property (45 minutes away) and waited for over an hour. I tried calling him and sent a few texts to no avail. Finally at 4 PM the electrician reached out and said he had a tire blowout. I would’ve completely understood if he would’ve at least called or sent me a quick text explaining why he can’t be there at the agreed time. Everybody carries a phone on them these days, so no communication is unacceptable. Wasted my time. Very disappointed. Hired someone else.

He was wonderful. I know nothing about electricity but he was kind to explain the options. I was very happy with his work. Electricians are usually very expensive. He was kind and charged me a very fair price. I am 100% satisfied and would recommend this company to anyone!

Mark did an exceptional job repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting the electrical wires, paneling and fixtures in my home. He was extremely knowledgable about what needed to be corrected, as well as very professional throughout the completion of the job. I highly recommend Mark as qualified, dependable, and trustworthy electrician! It was immediately evident that he has several years of experience in this field! I felt extremely confident with him completing the work and very satisfied with the results!! Thanks Mark!

I wasn't going to leave a review because Mark was VERY persistent about me not leaving a bad review and kept pestering me to leave a good review even after telling him my frustrations over the phone. I thought I could just shut my mouth and just say it is what it is move on. But then I thought these reviews were the reasons why I hired this guy and gave him my trust. - Mark misrepresented himself as a master electrician. - Smoked in my house without permission that I could smell throughout the house when he left - Left concrete, drywall, electrical wires, and copper scraps all over my bathroom, bathtub, front entry. I took pictures but thumbtack has nowhere to post them. He did offer however after he left and I had to call him on this to come back and clean up to give him credit. - I was grossly overcharged for Mark's ineptness and ended up paying $100/HOUR for him to fix his own mistakes. He cut a box out and ended up cutting into a wire which arc'd and caused me to lose power and fry 2 of my home automation devices. - He did do a few installations of devices that came out fine but in the end I feel we overpaid and that he misrepresented his skill level. His son seemed to be the one teaching him what to do. - We paid over $1000 and feel disgusted with myself for hiring someone who misrepresented themselves so heavily and having to clean up my house after a "professional" like this. - Kept trying to drag the job out not bringing proper materials (wood for larger chandeliers that were discussed the day before) I thought in the end that it would be better to hire someone by the hour I was sadly mistaken.
