Mark was incredible. We were potty training our child and discovered that flushing baby wipes is a terrible idea. Mark responded quickly and showed up the next morning. It was no easy task considering the damage we did but he was up to the task and cleared the main line for us. He kept us updated as the job went on and in the end gave us a great price for the work done. I will be recommending Mark to anyone who has plumbing issues.

Robert was amazing. A great guy and very skilled at what he does. Repaired our plumbing leaks and replaced our water valve system to perfection. He even helped me with issues I was having with my sprinkler system and landscaping (that wasn't on the agenda)! He is very knowledgeable and friendly. Thank you for your professionalism.

Frankie is talented, experienced and fast. He arrived on time, assessed the problems, and fixed everything fast and efficiently. I have had work done before by other technicians who took too much time figuring out and fixing. Upon talking to Frankie, I learned he has spent three years in plumbing school and has worked many years doing more complex jobs than the one I had. I have already given him more work at my business and will refer him to friends and colleagues. I recommend him highly.

I had them replace two hose faucets outside, relocating one of them and replace my old 3-handle shower valve with a single handle. The work was done correctly, to quote (which was really competitively priced) and on time. Bill and Roxanne were sure to clean up and explain everything that they did. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again for any of my maintance or plumbing needs!

Recently Paul transformed my old attic space into a beautiful master bedroom with an ensuite/bathroom which has a custom window built in! In addition, he added much needed storage space and a show stopping light fixture at the entrance! He is professional, knowledgeable and very creative. His skill level for plumbing, electrical and construction exceeds all expectations! I would highly recommend him for virtually any type of job for home or business. It is evident that he is a professional and takes pride in his work. You can definitely hire him with confidence! It's great to find someone who is so reliable and competent!!

Bill was highly professional and very reasonable with his price. I had an issue with a bathroom in my rental property. After explaining the need, Bill offered to provide instructions to my husband to fix it and avoid him coming altogether. Circumstances didn't allow for us to do that but I knew right away Bill was going to be a great plumber for the job. He took care of the issue quickly and I absolutely will call him for my future plumbing needs.

Rod was amazing. He discovered my faucet was leaking and needed to be replace. He went to Home Depot with me to make sure I purchased the right type of faucet, then installed it. The fact he was willing to stay and complete the job was so appreciated and avoided another service call. He was professional and provided high quality work at a fair value. I would recommend Rod to anyone with water softener or general plumbing needs. Thank you Rod!!

Solomon is the best! We had a hot water pipe burst underneath the upstairs bathroom. He came the same day and fixed it. He stayed late to get the job done.He also detected a tub leak which he made sure is fixed for good. While fixing the hot water pipe leak, we also had him install the new vanity which has now 2 sinks. He did the whole rerouting of pipes, install vanity light and mirror for a reasonable price. Plus you can hire him for any electrical job as well. We had to move the outlet due to bigger vanity and mirror. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing or electrical work done. A++++++

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
