Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I choose the best long-distance moving company in Atlanta?

The best long-distance moving companies in Atlanta will have a familiarity with the Georgia area and know how to manage some of the challenges of an Atlanta move, such as peak traffic times and high temperatures. You might also want to hire movers who are skilled in packing quickly and carefully, as well as efficiently relocating your belongings.

For moves within Georgia, you can check the Georgia Department of Public Safety website for more information on licensed movers in the state.

When researching the best long-distance moving companies in Atlanta, compare reviews and ratings. Pay attention to reviews that mention the movers’:

  • Quality of work. Have customers complained about their belongings being damaged during the move?
  • Punctuality. Are the movers known to show up on time?
  • Professionalism. Were the movers nice, respectful and responsible?

After you’ve narrowed down your top picks, reach out to the movers and ask for estimates.

How much does it cost to move across the country from Atlanta?

The cost to move across the country from Atlanta may vary depending on various factors. For example, the long-distance movers you choose when moving from Atlanta to Seattle or moving from Atlanta to New York may charge you different rates based on your destination. They may also charge a flat hourly rate. The cost will also depend on the company you choose and the time of year.

To find out how much it will cost you to move across the country, contact the top movers in Atlanta.

What is considered a long-distance move in Atlanta?

A long-distance move is generally considered to be 400 miles or more, but some consider a move of 100 miles or more to be long-distance. Some examples of long-distance moves from Atlanta may include moving from:

  • Atlanta to New York
  • Atlanta to Boston
  • Atlanta to Dallas
  • Atlanta to Houston
  • Atlanta to Charlotte

Contact the best Atlanta movers to receive help with your move -- whether it’s a long-distance, cross-country or local move.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is the cheapest way to move long distance?

The cheapest way to move long distance is to plan ahead. This allows you to capitalize on several money-saving strategies. For example, you may consider renting a portable moving container. These are often cheaper than moving trucks, though moving truck rentals are a great option for moderately sized homes.

Planning ahead also gives you time to start looking around for free moving boxes and supplies. You might also be able to snag discounts from moving companies if you book far out in advance and ask movers for a deal. Try not to move during the peak season (spring or summer), as prices tend to be highest during that time.

Contact the best long-distance movers in your area to get free estimates and figure out a way to save money.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Mike and team did an incredible job with my long-distance move from Atlanta to Pennsylvania. They were friendly, incredibly professional, and very efficient. The team was very trustworthy as well - I felt very comfortable leaving the truck with their team overnight. They came prepared with a brand new lock for the truck and left the keys with me before they took off on the trip which was reassuring. On top of all of this, the price was extremely competitive compared to the other Thumbtack quotes that I received. I would strongly recommend considering Mike and team for your long distance move. To clarify some possible confusion, Mike owns both a cleaning services company (Executive Touch Cleaning) and a moving company (Stress Less Moving) - I was thrown off a bit when I got a moving quote from Executive Touch Cleaning.

Really impressed by how quickly and efficiently everything was moved! I had a long distance move over a holiday weekend and needed movers last minute. Greg and team responded very quickly and were able to accommodate me in their schedule for a 10+ hour drive! Arrived an hour late (and let me know) but was able to get to my destination (with holiday traffic) and unloaded in record time! Thanks!

Erik was the first mover I spoke to, and I knew 3 minutes into the conversation that I was going to pick him. This was a long-distance move, and Erik completed it exactly as planned. It was a fair price for top-quality work. He is a true professional and a really nice guy. I strongly recommend Erik and his team and would definitely pick them again in the future. Thanks Erik, you made moving day a breeze for me. Nancy

Curtis and Carlos are amazing. I was doing an long distance, out of state move. They were super punctual, professional, careful with my belongings, and very responsive to me in every step. As a single female, moving states, it can be stressful. They help take that stress off of me so I could focus on relocation. My belongings arrived safe and sound, and they were very diligent about protecting my things. I would hire them again in a second...without a second though, and would recommend them to anyone and everyone possible. When I move again (which will happen, I get moved around a lot of work), if they service my area, I will be hiring them. Thank you so much Curtis and Carlos. You guys are amazing!

We hired Stressless Moving Service to help with our long distance move from Atlanta to New York City in 2020 April. We moved previously from Washington D.C. to Atlanta using a major company that was more expensive, took more than a week to arrive, and some items were scratched. Mike and his colleagues were extremely professional, quick, friendly, and overall very helpful before and during the move. The furniture and boxes arrived in perfect condition in less than one day. Unfortunately, we had some administrative issues with our new building’s insurance requirements and communication speed, but Mike took over and solved it very seamlessly. This move took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and Mike and his colleagues were prepared and wore protective equipment to protect themselves and our belongings. We highly recommend Stressless Moving Service, LLC for any kind of moves around the country.

I wish I could give them 100 stars. I moved from Atlanta to Philadelphia and was able to move on the 30th. Unbelievably, they were able to deliver my things the *next day*. You should expect 4-18 days for a long distance move. Karl and Godfrey were beyond awesome. Karl is probably the best driver I've ever seen. He was able to back into my narrow driveway with only inches on either side and navigate the narrow streets of Philadelphia. They were very careful and reassuring and nothing was damaged. I moved into an old, skinny townhouse with skinny staircases to the second floor and basement and they had no problem moving things there. The flat rate price was very reasonable and there were no hidden fees. There is a little room for improvement, I think they need some help in the office.

I had to move from midtown to Decatur and at the last moment I realized I was going to need help. My wife's number to upon "Here to There" moving company and using thumbtack we were able to get a response within 5 minutes. We received a quote that was hundreds of dollars cheaper than some of the other movers in town. also I received a military discount which always means a lot. I was a little unsure about what to expect because the movers were at my house about three hours later. What I saw and what was the result was amazing. I was blown away that I could receive such an experience so quickly and that my things were taking care of and my wallet was taken care of too. I would highly recommend here to there movers to anyone whether it's long-distance are in town move that needs to be done. These guys are the real pros, take it from me I've been through them all.

Hired Chris for a long distance move from GA to VA. He loaded the things early in the am as we requested so that we could get on the road. First time we have ever had a mover show up on time! We felt confident enough to trust him to load our things unsupervised from our storage unit, so he and his crew could leave when they needed to later. He even got the close out receipt from the storage place for us. They drove our things and unloaded them the next day as requested. Nothing was damaged and everything was accounted for. They did a great job and in good timing for a two man crew. We would hire them again in a heartbeat. Clearly dedicated to the service he offers.

I just cannot recommend these guys enough! I've used movers a tone and mostly had bad experiences. I was reluctant to think this time would be any better, but much to my surprise, Chance made the quoting and organization process easy, he was super responsive and flexible. Chance called 20mins before his schedule arrive and he and his team showed up on time to move our heavy gym equipment (which was no easy feat and almost no other mover was willing to tackle this). They broke down every piece, carefully wrapped and covered them for the move and on the other side reassembled everything perfectly. This was a long distance move and we needed our equipment to be delivered in a very exact time window which Chance assured me would happen. The delivery was due to arrive at the agreed upon time, but at the last minute we needed the arrival time to be delayed half a day, which Chance very kindly accommodated for us. I should also mention there were no hidden fees or up charges. If you want peace of mind when moving and knowing your belongings are in safe hands, book these guys!

I used this company twice with a long distance move from Atlanta, GA to Bethesda, MD and from Bethesda, MD to Atlanta, GA, within 6 month time frame. In fact I purchased their movers lunch at whole foods and paid them a tip of a 100 dollars each. The first move they broke my mirrors and busted my bedroom night stand drawers. Stripped my canopy bed screws. They gave me $100 discount which was not a reasonable amount of damage they have cause to my furniture. The second move they waited until the last day of the contract of my job and condo rental to pick up my items. This inconvenienced me Causing me to take extra days off of work. I paid them 95% of the money after we arrived. They waited an extra week to deliver our items. The contact guy Frank Castello was rude about the entire experience and could care less about our concerns. I normally don’t write reviews but this company was so unprofessional potential customers should be aware. At one time he insulted and yelled at my pregnant wife for not agreeing with how they were treating us. They didn't accept PLATINUM AMERICAN EXPRESS and I had to get the cash from another savings account. They insisted that I go to a check cashing place to get the money buy borrowing it. This was a total mess. He did not know my wife was pregnant until I wrote this letter. His response is an outright lie. Customer service sucks! Please see attachment of their response to me. The movers wrapped our TV’s in BOXES WITHOUT ANYTHING to protect its edges and screen. I turned on my 55’ TV and it no longer works. Who ever picked our items up were not the same team who dropped it off. The gentlemen who dropped our items off were experts unloading and they unloaded and stored our items so well that I was totally impressed. Overall I would not hire them again because they are not consistent and their processes are broken, terrible communication, and they don’t value repeat customers.
