Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do house cleaners cost in Atlanta?

The best house cleaners in Atlanta charge between $80 and $135. However, this cost is subject to change at any time and will vary depending on your needs. For example, the type of cleaning you need may impact the price. A standard cleaning, move-out cleaning or deep cleaning will likely all have different costs. Also, some cleaners charge different prices based on the number of bedrooms, and others offer extra services such as window or appliance cleaning. If you have something special that needs to be cleaned, such as mold, be sure to check with your house cleaner to see how much they charge.

Please note: All cost estimates are accurate at time of writing and are subject to change. For the most accurate, up-to-date cost estimates for your specific project, get free estimates from pros near you.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service in Atlanta?

When searching for the best house cleaning or maid service in Atlanta, read house cleaning reviews and look for the photos of the companies’ past work. Also, if you see a Top Pro badge in a house cleaner’s profile, this is a sign that the house cleaner is one of the most top-rated cleaners on Thumbtack.

Atlanta homeowners should also consider their home type, budget and industry experience when looking for the best cleaning service. For example, because Atlanta is known for its hot and muggy summers, it’s a good idea to ask the cleaner or service what type of experience they have with preventing and cleaning mold inside homes.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

How much do maids or house cleaners make in Atlanta?

While specific maid salaries depend on factors such as education, certification and other skills, the average salary of housekeepers and maids in the Atlanta area is $21,350 annually or about $10.26 per hour. This is lower than the current $25,570 national average for maids and housekeepers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

Asked her twice verbally on the phone to clean the walls as it was for a move out cleaning and she didn’t- even gave a generous tip up front. Top of fridge and cabinet were still dirty. A move out cleaning ALWAYS includes walls!!

$200 for 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath. They stayed about 2 hours but my shower wasn’t clean. Soap stuck in the walls. Over priced without finishing the job. The ladies were nice but this is insane. Who wants to pay for cleaners that don’t clean the shower.

They were great about scheduling as I changed my appointment about 3 times. But they didn't clean the fans! I feel like that's pretty basic. Also still quite a few cobwebs on the walls.

Xpressure Washing and Cleaning did an excellent job cleaning my home. They completed a very thorough deep cleaning which included cleaning the inside of my appliances (oven, refrigerator, etc.) as well as wiping down the interior windows and removing spots from the walls. They left no stone unturned. I wish I’d taken before and after pictures of their work, but take my word for it, they will take care of all of your housekeeping / cleaning needs in a timely, professional manner.

She is still cleaning in my home as I write this. My home has never been cleaner. Paula is a detail oriented person. She cleaned my trash can!!! And the wall behind the trash can. (Because it needed it). Things that I would not think about doing, she did. Cleaned my ceiling and ceiling fans. I cannot say enough good about Paula and her daughter who helped her. GREAT job! She has now become my regular home cleaner.

Arturo and his partner did a good job arriving on time, great job on the Baththub cabinets vaccuuminng fridge. However on my hard wood floors and some stains on the wall felt it needed a deeper clean upon inspection post. I liked their professionalism however and next time I’ll engage them for a moving out or deeper clean . Thanks !

Ms. Toni came in to see what was needed to be done and got started. She was finished fairly quick but the place was very very clean. What I love the most was how much pet hair she removed, she moves the furniture to clean behind them and she scrubs the bottom wall trimmings. Would definitely use this service again.

Allow me to be clear. The cleaners were good. However the arrogance of the owner made the overall experience negative. She came to our home with her crew and knocked a piece of art off the wall upon arrival - damaging the wall. Instead of apologizing she explained that she’s never been to our home before. What does that have to do with anything?? Secondly when I followed up with her on an area that clearly had been missed, instead of offering to correct, she asked about payment. We were interested in a recurring service but won’t be using Lorna again. It was clear that she has enough business without ours and we understand. Will be looking for quality AND customer service in another provider.

Amoni and her team did an incredible job with my move out clean! She was early to the appointment and really took her time to make sure everything was done to bring my unit back to it's early glory days. She was able to put me in touch with a great contact to help me get my accent walls primed and some drywall fixed, SAME DAY! I will definitely be using her again and I will be recommending her to family and friends.

My situation was unique...and Toni and GBR handled everything perfectly! I came in from out of town to surprise my daughter (who was out of town) with new furniture etc. I barely knew how to get to her apartment much less anything else...but I didn't have to worry because Toni handled it all. In ONE DAY she moved out and donated the old furniture; brought in, assembled, and placed the new furniture; hung a tv on the wall; and cleaned before and after all was done. She even returned the next morning to do a final cleaning. And when she saw I had a migraine that day and was alone in the city, she left after cleaning and told me to call or text her with a "911" if I needed anything. That is full service! Thank you, Toni!

Overall house was cleaned and I appreciated the look and some area which was done very well like most baths, fridge, inside cabinets. Also I liked their carpet vacuumed cleaning. However, from deep clean move-in job for a vacant home I expected more attention to details. I rather, job inspected at the beginning and give relatively accurate time and cost estimate so we set mutual expectation. Jen and her partner spent 7 hours-2people, but it seems at the end they had to rush. So floor was poorly mopped and two closets and one bath tub was missed. I checked one ceiling fan I got dust and dirt on my hand and also from several blinds. Oven walls were not cleaned well either to my expectations. Some may have been missed and some may needed more time. I suggest here having proper material like oven cleaner, small ladder may help cleaning speed and quality. Some places needed to be scrubbed or double wet-wiped rather than quick wiped or feather dusted like inside oven or ceiling fan or blinds. I rather to trust the cleaner such that I do not need to spend time and go check every where like every fan or blind or closet. I think they are good but for deep clean move-in need some more improvement will help.

If I could give Katie and her crew 10 stars I would. We have had lots of indoor renovations done to our new home and the dust was absolutely horrendous. So bad I was having allergy issues. I didn't even know where to start with the mess and called Katie in a complete panic this morning- she immediately put my mind at ease and told me she would come handle it today!!!! In just 4 hours every wall and baseboard in this house was washed - its so clean it's literally sparkling and the air quality is 100% better. I feel like i can relax and enjoy my new home now. Not to mention she is a total sweetheart, my timid dogs even liked her! So glad I've found my new cleaning service. Katie is THE BEST.

Stay far away from this company! I was very clear about what I needed prior to hiring them. Their quote was 3x times what I received from others. She explained that they were more expensive because they stay until everything was done and that they do baseboards, walls, etc. and this is what sold me on using them. When they arrived (late), the very first thing that they said was that it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as what I described. I explained to them that the condition was extremely bad for me and that the cleaning had gotten behind due to my work schedule. They were nice and pleasant during the time they were there. They stayed about 12 hours and when they were done I admit that I was extremely tired and did not do a thorough check but I did notice some things that were not done and she agreed to come back at 8 AM. This is where the problems begin, I wake up and go into the kitchen and see that the floor is nasty, the baseboards had not been cleaned and the fan had not been touched. It’s 8 AM and they had not arrived so I called, no answer, I then text and send pictures of the things that had not been done, still no response. I then called again, and she answered and became extremely defensive, she first tried to tell me that I never said if I wanted her to come back which was absolutely nothing true. She even told me not to touch anything before she returned. She then tells me that they felt a way about me not being “appreciative” of the work that they did do, as if I shouldn’t be concerned about what they didn’t do. She goes on to say that some of the things that she did was not in her job description and that they stayed longer than what she planned. First, I was very clear about what I needed done and not one time did she tell me it was not in her job description. Second, I hired her at a much higher cost because she told me that they would stay until everything was completed to my satisfaction. Last, although they did a good job on what they did complete, I still have every right to expect that they fulfill the entire job agreed upon. She then had the audacity to personally attach me by telling me that my house shouldn’t have been in that condition I’m the first place, which I found hilarious and extremely unprofessional. Hilarious because you insisted several times that it wasn’t bad at all, and unprofessional because this is your job, I would never insult a client in such a way. I always attempt to resolve an issue because I absolutely hate to leave negative reviews as I am a business owner and realize how difficult it is, but they were not at all interested in correcting the issues but seemed to take it personal that I wasn’t appreciative enough about the work that they did do. As I stated before, they were pleasant during the time that they were here, they did a good job on what they did do, but they what they didn’t do was completely unacceptable for someone in the cleaning business especially considering the amount that I paid them. This was an expensive lesson learned.
