What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

I had a leak in kitchen faucet, and water had gotten under the laminate flooring. I requested help on Sunday through Thumbtack, and Mr. Hall responded that day. He arrived Monday afternoon, discovered a different leak in the process of taking up the flooring, and repaired it. Today he finished the reinstallation, and my kitchen is back to normal. Fortunately, the laminate is waterproof, so it could be dried and replaced. I highly recommend Halls Flooring. (He told me before he left that he installs granite and quartz countertops as well. )

Do NOT hire Newman Premier Services! This will be a long post but I hope to save someone the pain I have experienced. Steven and his crew are not timely, clean or professionals. I do not believe they showed up one time at the stated start time. Steven had other obligations that he continually left to attend and when he did his untrained workers did what they thought was right. I understand people have lives but don't schedule projects if you cannot supervise. The flooring installed in my living room had to be torn up three different times because they were not doing it correctly. They used my personal tools, which were not around after they finished the job (He did offer to replace them but has not). They used my gym equipment to hold down the flooring and coated them in adhesive and did not feel the need to clean them. They also left huge globs of adhesive stuck to the baseboards. The trim selected did not match trim already installed in my home. I understand construction is a messy job but the state my living room was left was unsafe, the main entry way was littered with tools. Steven scheduled an appointment months after the job was complete to fix the trim but did not show up for the appointment because he was in the Bahamas. Also, while installing flooring he broke a tile in my bathroom and stated that I could fill it in with some mortar. I am the customer and should not have to fix damage from an installer. I was away from home when he completed the job and he hounded me for payment without my ever seeing the floor. I should have held out because I would have never paid! The workmanship and quality of the work is dismal at best. We gave him a piece of our flooring to match and the color and texture are not even close. He stated that we could have an exact match but we would have had to order it. I as the customer was never in a rush to install the flooring. I will say that he fixed a few issues the install uncovered but apart from that caused more pain than good. - Late - Stolen equipment - Complete lack of care for customers property or cleanliness upon job completion Please see screenshots as to how this "professional" handles customers.

Stroke above did an amazing job on my new flooring. Danny and Samantha took the time to work with me and what I wanted. Honestly I got 3 bids and the others spent 5 mins in my home and threw number out. They spent almost 2 hours making sure I was happy with the choices I made. Recommend them to all. Thank you

I was fortunate enough to have Jeremy at Professional Wood Replacement do a substantial amount of work at my new (old) house. The floor in my half bath had rotted out, as well as the subflooring around my chimney. Jeremy came in to only quote installing the tile in the half bath, but upon hearing of the other problems I was having, went ahead and quoted the entire job. Jeremy ended up saving me around $1500 and the hassle of multiple contractors coming through to do the same job. On top of the savings, Jeremy did the job sooner than the others could have, even working early and late to try to meet my deadline. You'll want to consider Professional Wood Replacement for any jobs for which you need some good advice, timely work and conscientious--dare I say innovative--cost saving efforts. You'll enjoy working with Jeremy, he's very experienced and sincere and will make sure you're satisfied with the results.
