Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor and a concrete floor?

The time it takes to install hardwood and concrete floors varies based on the condition of your current floors, the size of your floors and other factors. Use the following information to gauge how long your flooring installation might take.

Time it takes to install a hardwood floor: Several days to 2+ weeks

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation.

During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Subfloor repair can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins.

The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, staining takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied.

Time it takes to install a concrete floor: 2 days to 1 week

Installing concrete floors can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on what you need done. Some of the factors that can impact how long it will take to install concrete floors are:

  • The size of the space
  • The stain or finish
  • The condition of your existing floor
  • Whether you want intricate, simple or no designs
  • The overall complexity of the project

To get an accurate estimate of how long installing concrete floors will take for your home, speak to a concrete contractor near you.

Should I remove baseboards when installing hardwood floors?

You can install hardwood floors without removing baseboards, but it’s recommended that you remove them to fix baseboards that aren’t properly aligned, cover the expansion gap, adjust the boards’ height and ensure the baseboards match the new flooring. When talking to contractors, ask if they recommend removing your baseboard before they install your hardwood floors.

Do you put anything under hardwood floors?

It’s possible to install certain surfaces under hardwood flooring if you’re concerned about moisture or noise transmission. Builder’s felt, solid underlayment, plastic sheets and rubberized membranes are a few options you can consider. Talk to a hardwood flooring contractor or company to discuss all of your options.

Do engineered wood floors scratch easily?

Yes, but engineered wood flooring has the same susceptibility to scratching as hardwood flooring. Engineering wood floors have a layer of real wood on top. For this reason, engineered hardwood reacts the same way that regular hardwood does to scratching. If you don’t mind a few character marks on your floor like small scratches and dents, this is not a problem. However, engineered wood can be sanded down and resealed if the damage gets too great.

Find a hardwood floor professional in your area who can tell you more about the pros and cons of engineered wood floors.

How thick is hardwood flooring?

Hardwood flooring generally comes in several thicknesses, with thicker, high-quality boards typically being more expensive and more durable. The thinnest is 5/16 inch thick. The next thickness is 3/8 inch thick, and the thickest solid hardwood flooring is generally 3/4 inch thick or 1/2 inch thick. The cost for each thickness varies by the brand, retailer and type of wood. Generally, you might see prices ranging as low as  $2.50 to $6 per square foot.

What is the best hardwood floor?

The best hardwood floors are made from durable, hard species like oak, maple and cherry. Solid hardwood is typically the better choice over engineered wood because you can sand out the scratches multiple times. However, engineered hardwood is better equipped for humid households.

Consider buying prefinished hardwood flooring, which can be more durable and simplify the installation process. Plus, prefinished wood often comes with a warranty from the factory.

Bamboo is another popular option, though be aware that some might not be as eco-friendly as others due to its production process. Some of the popular hardwood floor brands are Bruce, Carlisle and Lumber Liquidators.

To ensure you choose the best type of wood flooring for your home, hire one of the top hardwood floor installation professionals near you.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

Above and beyond is how I would describe Mr. Singleton's approach to our hardwood floor installation. He offered to go pick up the flooring and other materials (not included in the price quote), and his attention to detail around transition strips and difficult areas made the new hardwood match our existing flooring seamlessly. We couldn't ask for better workmanship and look forward to working with Elijah again in the future.

My experience with Pat and Tom was great. They did some painting and installed a hardwood floor for me. There were some initial issues with the hardwood installation, but after I expressed my concerns, the problem was completely rectified the next day which involved some rather extensive and time consuming work on their part. I would highly recommend them.

Danny and his team did an excellent job on our hardwood flooring project. They removed old carpet and installed new beautiful hardwoods to match our existing, in the entire 2nd floor of our home (3 bedrooms and our stairway, which they completely rebuilt). Part of their process included re-securing our wood subfloor- and now our floors don’t squeak or creak! Additionally, they did an excellent job refinishing our existing hardwood floors downstairs. They truly look brand new! Danny and crew were very personable and professional, and completed our project on time. I would definitely use them again for future projects.

All-Around Floors refinished engineered hardwood floors and installed LVP in one of my rental properties. They did an excellent job. Kofi was extremely responsive and professional. I was out of the country during the time, and he kept me posted during every step of the project. He worked with the cabinet contractor that was refacing the cabinets, to ensure everything was done in order. I highly recommend them and will use them again.

You will not find a better, more reasonable, wood flooring guy in Atlanta. Douglas started work the same DAY as his quote and helped me meet an impossible deadline to replace carpets with hardwood before my move in in 72 hours. This included purchase, install AND a stain match to the other level of the house. His price was probably 1/2 of his competitors. And his work quality was second to none. He’s also the nicest guy who responds the very second u text him. I cannot say enough good things about this experience… and the new hardwood floor is gorgeous. Thanks so much Douglas!

I reached out looking for someone to help replace the carpet in the upstairs with hardwood floors. I reached out to a few companies and had a couple quotes. We ended up using Pro Flooring Installation because Hector was very professional and responsive. Getting scheduled was complicated on my end because I was traveling for work. Hector and his team were really flexible and worked with dates/times that worked for me. When I was not able to be at the house, I was always made aware of what was going on with updates and photos. Hector and his team were able to match the original floors that were downstairs despite the fact that the house is ~20 years old. I would definitely recommend and use again in the future.

In short : outstanding contractor. Highly recommend!!! The details : we had the pleasure to work with Kofi on 3 different projects : installation and staining of hardwood floors, wall demo and sliding glass door installation. My experience working with him and his team was top notch from start to finish. Kofi was always super responsive, providing good advice and guidance on how to best handle things, I totally trust his judgement because he clearly cares about his customers. The scope was well described from the beginning and there were constant follow ups during the execution of the project. Everything was done in a timely manner and was hassle free. The work itself was done while we were traveling, and while that might sound scary to some it wasn't the case with Kofi because we knew he was taking good care of our house during our absence, and working diligently to deliver quality work on time. He also kept us posted with progress the whole time and sent us pictures :) Everything was done by the time we came back from our trip and the work itself exceeded our expectations : our floors are sooo beautiful, the living room completely transformed! I will totally be looking forward to work with Kofi and his team again in the future and will confidently recommend his services to anyone I know is pursuing floor work or any kind of home improvements projects.

We wanted hardwood floors on the main level, the fireplace re-tiled and needed a bathroom vanity installed. The Owners came to our home in less than 48hours. They spoke with us about what we wanted, discussed the materials to be used, gave us a quote and emailed it as well. Everyday the workers showed up a few minutes before schedule and were never late and they did NOT talk on the cell phone or smoke cigarettes. These guys were very professional, kind, super clean and tidy and the owners were very responsive to our text or calls. The first company we hired left us hanging for 30days but JCI completed the job right on schedule and even worked with us during some slight changes and re-scheduling issues. I told the owners that I want to post a review because this is what a business should be; their the real deal and you will be glad you hired them to complete your home.

I deal with contractors on a regular basis, both renovating apartments (which is my business) and also fixing up my family's 1920's bungalow. I was impressed with Craig from the beginning. He was extremely responsive and easy to schedule with. He showed up on time. He also has a mobile work area/truck so he comes with all of the tools he needs. Right off the bat he came off as extremely professional and personable. He's a family man who takes so much pride in his work and it really shows! I can tell that he doesn't just take jobs to take them. He's very upfront and candid about what he can and can't do. He is honest and realistic about time frames. He's also realistic and upfront about pricing and whether or not he can do the job for an hourly rate or a per project rate. He's got a contract, which I found to be extremely fair to both parties and simple yet professional while still being extremely thorough about describing the work to be completed and who will pay for what materials. I didn't find him to be the cheapest but I found him to be an incredible value for the price he charges and I feel that his prices are very reasonable (I shop around!). He was knowledgeable about construction in many areas. He's a great problem solver and he thinks the project through before he quotes a price and walks through everything with you to make sure both parties are on the same page. He's also extremely attention to detail - something I noticed right off the bat. Craig installed vinyl hardwood floors (Allure Flooring) in one of my rental properties and they turned out even more amazing than I could have hoped for. We've since had him quote 3 projects for our personal home and are in the process of hiring him again. If you want to use Craig, you better act quickly because we plan on keeping him busy for awhile! Once you meet him you'll feel the same way! I will post pictures as soon as the apartment photo ready so you can see how great the floors look! I'll also post pictures when he's done with our other projects. I'm very, very satisfied with the flooring project and happy I met Craig. He's definitely a rare gem in the construction field!
