Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is the cheapest way to move?

Scheduling your move during the off-season is typically the cheapest way to move. Avoid moving in May, June, July, August or September, when moving company rates are typically much higher. If you’re moving across the country, research how the moving companies in your city charge. You might save money if you hire flat-rate movers instead of hourly movers.

Of course, you can save money moving if you DIY by renting a moving truck or moving pods. However, be sure to weigh the pros and cons of moving all of your belongings and valuables by yourself. Factor in the cost of a moving truck (including fuel), the cost of moving equipment, the labor involved and the time it will take to complete your move by yourself.

What do full-service moving companies provide?

Full-service moving companies can help take the stress out of moving by supplying a moving truck and handling your entire move from start to finish. These professional movers can also provide packing services, materials and supplies. Full-service movers also load your belongings into the truck, drive it to your new home, unload the truck and (in some cases) offer to help you unpack your belongings. If you're interested in hiring full-service movers, compare the top-rated movers near you and ask for estimates.

Should I buy moving insurance?

Your homeowners or renters insurance policy may or may not protect your belongings if they get lost or damaged during a move. If you’re moving valuable items, or if you’re moving a great distance, it could be a good idea to invest in moving insurance.

Interstate movers are required to offer you full value protection and released value protection to help reimburse you in case of damage or loss. If you’re moving within your state, check with your state’s consumer affairs agency to see if your state has rules and requirements regarding moving insurance and valuation coverage.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

The Movers did an awesome job for our local move - worked fast, packed everything really well and very professional. Even when storms and power outages wrecked the original schedule, we quickly found a new time that worked better for everyone. Would gladly hire again!

Really Good work moving. Ran over time because of a previous job before hand, but a discount was given and move was successful regardless. They breakdown large items and reassemble at new location if needed. Quick note they don't move glass items, Guns, or TV's that are not properly packed. Not a big deal for a local move but anything long distance you may want to note to customers. However I will do business and highly recommend

We are very happy with their service. Very energetic and they did with happy heart. They helped us move one bed room apartment from 3rd floor. While in transit, they made sure our things are not damaged. Without any damage, they shifted to our new home with no tension for us. I can recommend these guys for local moving.

I had hired Ronnie for a local move . I had bugged him several times prior to the move regarding the T&C's and he was more than willing to address all of them . The move was from an apartment on the 3rd floor to a house . Ronnie and his team were extremely efficient both in terms of time taken and taking care of the heavy furniture . They did not waste a minute and were super fast in offloading the stuff and assembling it.I will highly recommend Ronnie for any move.

Nicholas and his crew were fantastic - friendly, fast and thorough. There was a mix-up with the start/arrival time but the crew worked hard to get the job finished quickly (a move out to local storage). Nothing was damaged, and they took great care wrapping and carrying furniture.

We moved from an apartment to a house. I was quoted for two movers and three showed up which was actually a huge help. They also honored the original agreement. The movers showed up on time which was a plus. While moving boxes upstairs into the new home the guys got worn out and slowed down but it wasn't too bad. My only "complaint" was that the billing person did not charge my card until a few days later. Other than that they are a good local mover. Just make sure that you over communicate with them.

They performed a local move (7 miles) but were so nice and worked the entire time with no complaints. I had a monster hill where they had to unload and they worked with stide. I definitely recommend this company. Thanks again!!!!

I used Next Door Relocators for a local move. Scott, who I booked my original appointment with was helpful and friendly from the beginning. Michael, whom I spoke with in the office, confirmed everything and answered all my questions. Geno and Ken, my movers, arrived on time. They were professional and moved my items quickly. My move was stress free which is not something you say often when moving. After the move Michael followed up swiftly to ensure everything was completed to my satisfaction. In the future, not too soon, I will use this company again. With confidence I would also refer Next Door Relocators for moves. Thank you, A. Dickey

We hired TRG movers for a local move last weekend and had a very smooth & hassle-free experience, thanks to this awesome moving company! We were recommended to go with 4 movers, given our total inventory and I'm so glad we listened to them. We were told the move could take anywhere between 4-6 hours and their estimate was absolutely right. On overall quality, the movers were really great! They showed up on time, started quickly and divided tasks within their team of 4. They were professional, courteous, and efficient. Nothing was damaged or scratched. They paid close attention to detail and our instructions (how to handle fragile boxes, no shoes on carpet.. ) and gave us a very stress-free moving experience. Thank you for your hard work, Team TRG! I strongly recommend this moving company to anyone in the Atlanta area. Cheers!!

This business advertises that it's a flat rate, and can beat the hourly prices. While it may be a flat rate, you are almost better going with a company that is hourly. I called myself trying to provide in detail the items I needed moved. While I do not have a traditional living set I have a 2 loveseat that sits two; and 2 swivel chairs; my bedroom which I explained was good quality and heavy was the only heavy item in my move. Because left undergarments in it (which I've done on local, and state moves) I was charged additional monies. My move cost me $500 and if I ran down all of the items, a professional mover would agree it shouldn't have. Lesson learned. I will see that the movers were polite and did a great job.

This was my first-ever local move (southwest Atlanta to West End) and I was dreading it because I know how time consuming and costly moving from state to state can be all too well. 2 Brothers was a RELIEF. They took my word for what I had to move (rather than having to schedule with a consultant to come over for a quote first), but gave me fair warning that if it was more than what they could fit on the trailer, the price would increase or I'd have to leave it behind. That could have easily been turned into a scam on their part, but the opposite happened. They were absolutely fair with what they charged and even let me have a say in the new pricing once I added on some items to my order. They were efficient at getting in and out and completely honest and careful with my things. I would totally use them again, but hopefully it will be a long while before I need to move!

I DO NOT recommend using this company! See my reason why....They took 7 hours and charged me $760.00 to move essentially what equates to a 1 bedroom apartment. He pushed me using 3 movers and I informed him of everything that needed to be moved and 2 movers could handle it. He agreed. He called me 2 hours prior to their scheduled time to inform me they will be 30 minutes late although they were reserved 2 weeks in advance (more than enough time for them to prepare). The owner showed up with an older man about 60 or 70 in age to assist him to move my items. Really!? They did not move ANY appliances...ie... washing machines, refrigerators, stoves, etc... They did not move ANY dressers, televisions, electronics, hot tubs, kitchen table, etc...They ONLY moved 1 King size bed, 1 loveseat, 1 couch, 1 chaise, 1 bookcase and about 15 small boxes with dishes and 8 clothing bags and 2 bags of shoes. They had an elevator that lead to a loading dock, giving them close access to their truck. Everything was packed in advance and what small items such as tools and glassware was packed, by me, while they transported the other boxes to their truck. They did not have to break the 1 bed down, everything was separated and organized for them to easily reach. I asked him after 3 and half hours why the move was taking so long and he stated my long hallway was the issue...I told him they were moving soooo slow. I believe it was on purpose. Unacceptable!! He agreed there was that much stuff to move...yes a one bedroom worth of things...he stated my hallway was long...I informed him the hallway. I stated the hallway was an average hallway and he doesn't have to take stairs. I've used 3 other moving companies I for previous moves and found them on this site and they have moved much larger homes (1-2 story 3 bedroom house, 1-3 story townhome and 1 from storage to a 2 bedroom apartment, 4th floor) and each took 3 hours on the lower end and 4 and half hours on the high end) They were all professional and worked in a timely manner. I didn't use them this time because of our schedule conflict---I stated all this to the mover during the move, prior to the drop off and once they unloaded. I stated I gave him the business, because he seemed professional during my initial interview, he understood the job at hand and they were local. I will not use them ever again. In my opinion, there are too many other moving companies that have been in business longer and understand time is money and it is essential to bring able bodies to move and be professional, on time, pack items timely, neatly and safely in a timely manner. Good luck in your search!
