Nelson and his crew completely transformed our back yard and we could not have been more delighted by the process or the outcome. The Entire Legacy Crew were dedicated, hard working, polite and professional. The scope of the job included major concrete work, 2 retaining walls, sod installation, stone work, irrigation, in ground drainage and landscaping. All of this work was completed by Legacy in two short weeks. Nelson was "hands on" throughout the process and treated our job as if it were his own backyard. I can not say enough good things about our experience. Thank you Nelson and Legacy Outdoor Living for enhancing our home and for providing us with an outdoor space that we love are so very proud of.

Artistic Design Roofing, I had a good experience with this roofing company. They roofed my house and did a great job. I had them back this week to sheath and roof a backyard patio with the same roofing material so it matched my house. They sent two roofers for the two day job. The workers at Artistic Design Roofing in Stone Mountain GA were very professional and courteous. They clearly wanted to ensure I was happy with their work and explained things while they worked. I would recommend this company and would hire them again. My in laws had similar positive experiences with this company as well.

We had new retaining walls built on both sides of the driveway as well as some landscaping done. We were very pleased with the project from beginning to end. Josh helped us with our product choices for the walls as well as plant selections. The project included removal of the existing stone walls, stump removal and plant removal. The crew was knowledgeable about all aspects of the job. We would definitely recommend The New South Group.

Martin first came to our rescue in 1997, when we needed major landscaping for our new swimming pool. The area on one side of the pool needed building up, and to keep it intact and level a wall roughly 4' high was required. Martin did the job right, installing a drainage system behind the timber wall and securing it with over 30 deadmen. He also brought in loads of topsoil as needed and ordered and delivered the sod we selected. As a bonus, he helped us lay the sod. About a decade later we hired Martin to design and build a long garden that extends from the pool up one side of the house and ends at the driveway. At the latter point he constructed a raised garden that curves beautifully around a flagstone plot. He built a stone wall fronting the garden that tapers to the ground, in harmony with the slope of the land. He selected all the plants and flowers, keeping in mind our wish for low maintenance as well as beauty. The gardens and the landscaping generally is something any artist would admire, if not envy. A few years later we asked Martin to build another raised garden in front of our house and to fix the sinking front steps. In addition, we wanted a flagstone sidewalk to replace the builder's concrete pathway. We also wanted the porch to be surfaced with flagstone. Again, Martin came through, rebuilding the porch foundation and laying out a flagstone path that has truly elevated our home's attractiveness. I wish I could think of something he could've done better to make this review seem more credible, but honestly, I can't. His rates are often lower than most, and his work reflects the dedication of a landscape artist. If need to add lasting beauty to your home you should give Martin McMillan serious consideration. We had a really good experience working with owner Roger Bregenzer. He was patient and informative with us as we are non-gardeners. He has been in the plant business a long time and he has a very hard working crew. On his initial consult visit to give us an estimate for landscaping our wild and weedy steep hillside, he recognized that a large number of our tall pine trees had a beetle infestation and were dead or dying. He provided us with a great referral for a tree company and provided good service in temporarily removing some azaleas to provide an exit path to remove the trees. After having over 25+ large pine trees removed, we had Roger's crew return to replant the azaleas and drastically improve our step hillside with all new plantings and the addition of large rocks. He was able to repurpose or retain several plants that were already on the property and tuck everything in with pine straw for the winter. We can't wait until spring arrives to see everything flourishing!

Barnard's Landscaping has done landscaping at my house since the mid 80's, not to long after they opened in Marietta. They have done everything from Laying sod for me, planting trees and bushes, planting flowers every year as the season changes and I want the fall colors in my front yard, to building a rock patio in the backyard. They also do my weekly lawn maintenance, cutting the grass, keeping the bushes trimmed, putting down pine straw, and just keeping my lawn looking like something out of a magazine. They do wonderful work, they're dependable and really do care that you're happy with the job that they have done, and no job is to big or small. With businesses coming and going all the time, it's a comfort to know that as the years go by they have always been there for whatever I needed done, with a friendly smile and good attitude. It's a great company with great people, and I HIGHLY recommend them. Barnard's should be the 1 and only place you call for your Landscaping needs. You won't be sorry.... I never have :)

GREAT work and the most patient and understanding contractor I have EVER dealt with. My mom lives on a very steep hill. I hired Kelvin to install stone steps from the bottom to the top, and he did an exceptional job. His professionalism, communication, skills, creativity, and workmanship was far above average. I highly recommend him for landscaping projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
