BEST MOVING SERVICE is an understatement!! These guys are the absolutely the BEST, in service, care and friendliness!! My wife and I were relocating from Columbia Sc to Atlanta GA. OUTSTANDING Services On moving day, the truck and crew not only arrived ON TIME, but almost 20 minutes ahead of time!! These are definitely people I can work with! As the lead mover Greg said, "If I'm on time, then I'm late." Absolutely words I live by. Greg, the lead and his helper Leo then got right to work. After a brief tour of the house and contents to be moved and a brief discussion on how we wanted things, the 2 guys loaded the truck in just over 3 hours. EXCELLENT!! Since this was to be an overnighter, Greg provided us with the name of the hotel where they were staying, his cell #, and then asked what time we wanted them to deliver to the new house. He also texted me on their arrival at the nearby hotel. PROFESSIONAL? ABSOLUTELY!!Greg and Leo arrived about 15 minutes early. After a brief tour of the house and where we wanted things, they got to work. The offloading was as efficient and quick as the upload, and the guys were done in a little less than 3 hours, including re-assembly of a couple of large furniture items. Did I forget to mention that Greg and Leo wrapped each and every furniture item as if it were a delicate museum antique...My wife and I have only this recommendation...don't bother calling any other moving service...BEST MOVING SERVICE is the ONLY one you need!! Thanks for making a very stressful situation almost enjoyable

Responded quickly to my request. Provided same day service to move and deliver a piano. Very professional, took care not to damage the piano and my home, at delivery. Great price and arrived as scheduled. Jasean kept me updated via text about his ETA. I could not have asked for better service and highly recommend Jasean Richardson.

I don't even think I have the words to express how grateful I am for Tate the Great Moving Service. This move was a little last minute and a descent size move. I was able to call and book an appointment with no issues or problems. emails and calls were responded to quickly and professionally. The movers arrived right on time and got right to work. They took great care in making sure no items were damaged or broken. They were also very friendly and professional, I definitely felt more like a family friend and not just another client. Mr. Crawford you are the best, I absolutely love how you handle business!!! There is no doubt that if anyone I ever know is looking for dependable movers, Tate the Great will be the only thing I could say!!!

I am absolutely satisfied with the moving service Mola provided this morning! The two guys (Terrence and an unknown mover) did a great job moving all the boxes I had in a fast amount of time (2 hours tops). Both movers were polite, patient, and hard workers. Thank you Cleo! I would definitely utilize Mola again, if need be, and I would definitely recommend their moving services to anyone who will be moving. Great job guys!! Thank you very much!!!!!

Natasha was a Godsend. I needed someone immediately and she responded to me in minutes and was able to meet me soon after. She is very friendly, knowledgeable, and great to work with and I enjoyed talkig to her very much. Her work ethic and her work is outstanding, I could not believe how clean she got this problem house, she did not miss a thing, she is extremely conscientious. I can not say enough good about her. We're trying to move my 80 year old father back into his house and she made it possible. She's a lifesaver, I am hiring her to come back at least once a month to clean. Thank you so much Natasha!!

The job involved moving the household goods (furniture and mainly boxed items) from a 1BR w/Den apartment to a storage unit, consisting of about 20 pieces of furniture and 60 mostly large boxes. The crew arrived at 9 am, well within their scheduled 8 - 10 window, viewed the apartment contents and route to street level and got to work by 9:15. The whole job was completed by noon, or within 2.75 hr., compared with the original estimate of 4.5 hr. All crew members had a good attitude and showed considerable initiative, asking only a few well thought out questions. I plan to hire MyPorter again for the move back from the storage unit to renovated apartment.

I called Elite Movers for a same day move after a bad experience with another mover the day before. They were very accommodating and within a couple of hours they were completing my move in 90 degree temps. I am extremely satisfied with their professionalism and prompt service. I will recommend them over and over again. Thanks so much Elite for helping me with such short notice!

My husband and I are extremely pleased with Beavers Piano. They were able to schedule our move within 24 hours. They showed up on time and went right to work. In addition to the piano they also moved an antique ice box that was bulky and heavy and handled that just as efficiently as they did the piano. They arrived at our new place ahead of us and quickly got the two pieces unloaded and set up! Both Robert and his son (also called Robert) were pleasant, responsive to my questions, and overall the whole experience was enjoyable. Beavers Piano also restores pianos, so they were able to give me a couple of tips as to how to remove a couple of blemishes on my piano that worked like a charm. Mark and I highly recommend them and will definitely use them again in the future if the need arises.

These guys had their work cut out for them when they arrived. I lived on a 3rd story apt and moved into a 3rd story apt w/o an elevator. They were able to complete the job in about 5 hours which was really good considering the number of boxes I had and large pieces of furniture. I even asked them to move one of my pieces of furniture to storage which was no problem with a reasonable fee. They were nice to work with and would definitely use their services again. Thank you to both of you for making a not so fun move better than expected! Jennie

I almost rated 4 stars because I had to leave a voicemail when I called, but I will say that they called me right back and answered my questions right away. The price Anthony gave me was very reasonable, and they showed up on time. The movers looked and acted very professionally and they had me moved faster and with much less effort than my last move. I'm never moving myself again. I'll definitely be using their services again when this lease ends!

If you're looking for a great company to move your home give "A Good Reason" a call. These men were punctual, polite, and even took the time in wrapping my furniture with care! I've made many moves and "we all know things get damaged", 😮 NO damages, and trust worthy. So I'd recommend this company to anyone who needs a good company to get the job done!

I agree with other reviewers that there is a bit of a disconnect in the office and my estimate was significantly off from my final price. There is also a bit of excessive overwrapping but I can understand why for a long distance move. Rose and Jennifer worked to ensure my final price was closer to the estimate and within my budget. William in logistics ensured the truck arrived within the timeframe I needed for a very specific and tight move due to a work start date. I would say what makes Great Nation great are the moving crews. Eric ran my pick up and did an excellent job securing my items and documenting everything that was loaded into the truck. Fred and Carlos went out of their way to ensure my delivery came on a specific day that was out of their time range. They were pleasant and worked extremely hard even though it was probably an inconvenience for them. Fred was on the crew for my pick up and was familiar with my items and my moving situation and just an absolute pleasure to work with. Even though there were a few hiccups I still 100 percent recommend Great Nation if you are looking for a fast and efficient move with great movers who care. A lot of long distance companies want you to wait weeks for your items. For a NJ to FL move I had my move completed in 4 days. I would definitely use Great Nation again in the future and would say any issue I experienced would happen with any other company. I called after another moving company bailed on me 2 days before my move. Great Nation was able to jump in and coordinate my move, deal with my high stress level, and make sure all issues were handled to my satisfaction. A+++

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
