Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a light fixture?

If you want to have a light fixture installed, the cost will likely be between $90 to $250 per fixture. The actual cost will depend on a number of factors, the first of which is the professional you hire. To find out how much you can expect to spend, contact several lighting installation professionals near you and ask for free estimates.

The type of fixture can also impact costs. For example, traditional ceiling mounts are usually less expensive than recessed lighting. The number of lights that need to be installed is another cost factor.

Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture?

Whether you need to hire a lighting installation service or an electrician to install a light fixture depends on the type of fixture, the complexity of your electrical wiring, and most of all, your experience and comfort. Depending on the location of the fixture, you may need to run wiring and install switches. If you don’t have any previous electrical experience, it’s quite possible to make a mistake that could create a hazard. However, if you know what you’re doing, installing a light fixture is fairly trivial.

Do light fixtures need to be grounded?

Grounding your light fixtures is important to protecting your household from dangerous shocks. If you’re unsure if your light fixture can be grounded, or if you don’t know how to ground it yourself, contact a lighting electrician near you

How do you install a ceiling light fixture?

Some of the steps involved in installing a ceiling or hanging light fixture including removing the old fixture, inspecting your wiring, turning off the power at the breaker box, connecting wires and attaching the fixture. Some of the tools, equipment and materials you might need include a step ladder, screwdrivers, screws, wire strippers, wire connectors, a power drill, pliers or more.

If you don’t have the necessary equipment or don’t feel comfortable installing your ceiling light on your own, contact a lighting professional instead.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I requested the services of Diodes LLC to install exterior lightings and internal bathroom exhaust fan / light. Mr. Perkins is professional technically knowledgeable about this business. He gave very good suggestions for the installation of the lights and also made sure sure the lights were weather proofed. For the interior work he did some complex carpentry to get the lights to fit properly and be aligned with the exhaust vent. I will use Diodes LLC again and recommend to peers and friends.

Ramin completed the installation of pocket lights and pendant lights in three rooms of our home. He provided a very competitive quote and was able to complete the work shortly after. Not only did Ramin perform an excellent job completing the work, he provided suggestions as to the placement of the pocket lights and reviewed our different options. My wife and I couldn't be happier with his work! We would definitely recommend him for any lighting project in your home.

I called Rami to troubleshoot a fluorescent lighting fixture on my 20 ft ceiling in my kitchen. Rami gave me an estimate to fix it, which was very reasonable; however, he also gave me great ideas for better lighting. He suggested that I hang pendant lights in place of the current lighting, the quote to complete was very reasonable - and he came back the very next day to complete the project. He is very knowledgeable and fair! My kitchen lighting looks more modern and is very functional. While he was there, Rami also gave me great ideas to update my lighting in the living room, which also has very high ceilings, he gave me an extremely reasonable estimate to complete this project - in the future. He was so pleasant to work with! I look forward to working with him again.

Ramin arrived on time and did a quick assessment and went on to fix my light fixture. The light fixture was difficult to fix and that is why I had hired help. Ramin completed the job and cleaned up after him. I am satisfied with his work and would hire again.

Raami was great! We had him install two sets of vanity lights, two GFCI switches and he repaired a cut wire from our demo. He also repaired our front patio light that had stopped working. I would recommend his services going forward.

I have to say, this is absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Jacob came out to our house to hang up 2 light fixtures. He hung up one, and the other he said we needed to buy an extra part to install it. No problem. Once we bought the part he said he’d come back and install the 2nd light. First of all, the light he did install doesn’t turn on. And on top of that we’ve tried to get him back to fix the first light and install the second (we bought the part he requested). After 3 tries of trying to get him out, we’re giving up. We would set a date and time frame and he just wouldn’t show up. No call. No “hey I’m running late”. Just never showed. So I’ve basically paid this guy to hang up one light that doesn’t even turn on. Very disappointed.

Our initial impression was great. John was very patient and insightful. He gave an initial quote for several indoor lighting projects. Afterward, we asked for itemized pricing for various types of under cabinet lights. Never got back to us despite my attempts to reach out. We ultimately went with Britebox who were a bit more expensive but really delivered. :)
