I hired Brett for construction/renovation needs to open my business. Before hiring Brett I had issues finding a reliable contractor who did quality work in a timely manner. Brett and his team exceeded my expectations and finished the job much quicker than I anticipated and flawlessly at that. Danny who works for Brett strives for perfection and both Brett and Danny's top priority was that I was happy with their work. If you are looking for drywall, paint, finish work etc. I highly recommend and trust Brett Miller and his team for your home or your business.

Rutis Cortez and his company were very easy to work with. His estimate was reasonable and he performed all the services we agreed on. Our Master bathroom's new tile shower and new ceramic tile floor is beautiful. If you live in the middle GA area, I highly recommend Cortez Painting and Remodeling for any home improvement project you are considering.

My job was completed in a timely manner. The job consisted of replacing closet rods and shelving that fell from the walls because they had not been installed properly. The drywall was repaired and painted and all rods and shelving was replaced the right way this time. I can’t wait to organize my closet. Ben did a GREAT job. Great personality. I would definitely recommend this company.

I have worked with Tracey on several projects, or shall I say helped him. He has redone my bathroom almost top to bottom. My bathtub/shower was blue, rather then go through the expense of pulling the old one out, that the bathroom was built around, he suggested painting it with an epoxy paint, problem solved. Of course the toilet and sink were blue also, along with blue accents in the sink counter top. All of this came out. Also, carpeting was in the bathroom, yes, it came out too. He has re floored, new base board and trim, new toilet and sink cabinet, counter top, and sink. He has used his experience to make recommendations to help cut cost, and up the appearance at the same time. I have worked with him on a remodel job involving the whole inside of a house. He puts everything in order, so one part of the job won't be interfered with after completion, while moving on with another part of the job. I have been very pleased with his work, and he will go over details before the job starts so there are no surprises minus the unexpected ones that are covered up from previous renovations.

I called Empire wanting to get an estimate on replacing carpet and vinyl flooring with either a laminate or hardwood and tile. Larry called me and scheduled an appointment. He arrived promptly with the samples I had requested. On the first visit I decided I might do Luxury Vinyl Plank throughout the entire house, but could not commit to a hard contract, so he gave me an estimate and left. After some thought, I decided I would not be happy with that, so I called to cancel. We had talked a good deal while he was here so he asked if he could come back and show me the hardwood samples I had not looked at on the first visit. I agreed. He returned to my home and when I saw the engineered hardwood that was my option, since I have a house on a slab, I was impressed enough to sign a contract and set a date. I also selected LVT for my kitchen and baths. I had pushed the installation out a couple of weeks but contacted him and asked if it could be pushed up some and they were able to come in two days. The tile men came first. They came at the end of the day, about 4:30 or 5 and worked until almost 8:30 pm to finish the job. I was very pleased with the work. The next day the hardwood guys arrived at 9:45 am and set to work. I had moved breakables but they moved everything else. They set up their saw in my garage and after tearing up the old carpet, pad and tack strips and cleaning, began laying the floor. They finished, cleaned and returned all my items, with my direction, to their proper places by about 5:30 pm. They were extremely courteous and the floors look gorgeous. The only sort of complaint that I have is that a fine layer of dust from pulling up the old floor was in the area where I had put my breakables but I don't fault them for not cleaning that really. I am very happy with the service that I got from Larry and the installers. I am happy with the product and very pleased with the result. I would not hesitate to recommend Empire.

I am a young professional who is in a wheelchair. I bought a single story foreclosed 1,600 sq. ft. house in midtown and contracted with Jill and David Ellis to remodel it and make it handicap accessible. They leveled an uneven cement floor, installed a new Mahogany wooden floor throughout the house, installed new appliances, and remodeled the master bathroom out of marble. Jill set it up so that I can roll myself into my shower stall and take a full shower while remaining in my wheelchair the entire time. I wanted my backyard fenced for security and instead of buying the preassemble thin board units they used pressured treated decking boards and built a custom fence that looks great and you can not easily scale it. They even attached carpet strips across the inside of the top so that if someone did try to climb over it their hands would be cutup by the carpet tacks embedded in those strips. Instead of just installing a new front door with the standard short screws that the prefab unites come with, they removed the those short screws and replaced them with 3 inch long screws so that the hinges were secured to into the actual frame of the house. The lock hardware was removed and they installed a 3-foot strip with correct cutouts for the door to latch and the deadbolt to sink into. This 3’ strip they too secured into the frame of the house again with 3-inch screws. The install was tested a few weeks later as I came home one night to find that someone had attempted to kick in the door. They put some effort into but the door did not fail. The police had to use a Jaws of Life rig to pry open the damaged door. I contacted them the day after this happened and they came and immediately installed me a new door. Clearly I think highly of their work. Great Job Jill and Dave!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
