Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Crew was great with move! I needed to shift from my apartment into a new one, and pick up furniture in a storage unit. They picked up my boxes and furniture from both locations, and helped move everything in the new place efficiently. They also assembled my bed frame completely, and very patiently. Would definitely recommend!

I didn't hire TRG and used another company instead. The company had a problem with their truck and were not sure if they were going to get to me to move until the next day. I messaged TRG in a panic and within a short time, they were going to be able to help me with my move! The original company ended up pulling through but I will definitely hold onto TRG Moving and Storage's information for the future. Exceptional customer service!

Deitric Lowe and his assistant did a great job for me last week with a very small move of a bulky leather loveseat from my home into a nearby storage unit. It was difficult to find someone to do a small move like that (under an hour) at a reasonable price. Everyone else I talked to had a minimum 2 hour labor charge. This job took less than an hour. My experience was great, from my conversations with Amanda to set up and confirm the move, to the message I got saying they were going to be 15 minutes due to traffic enroute from East Point to Roswell (understandable), to the actual move, where my one piece of furniture was treated with utmost care. They even moved a chair and ottoman to my garage for me while they were here, and helped me load up my car with a few things I had to remove from the storage unit to make room for the loveseat. I was under a real time crunch with new furniture being delivered the next day, and was very impresssed with the level of customer service and pleased with the move. DA Lowe Movers came through for me. I highly recommend and will use them again.

Smooth Moves did a great job in moving me from one apartment to another within metro Atlanta. Communication were great. They were punctual and flexible when I requested dropping some items at a storage facility. They worked constantly throughout and found time efficiencies where they could. They handled my belongings carefully, but one piece of furniture was scratched. Erik fixed this piece where the scratches were invisible very willingly. I would definitely use Smooth Moves again and recommend them to my family and friends.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The team arrived early and were very professional. They individually wrapped every piece of furniture before loading. I was afraid that I would have to get an additional storage unit (my downsizing efforts are not as good as they should have been...) but these guys packed my storage unit from top to bottom and side to side like a puzzle. They worked hard and fast all day. I would definitely recommend this company and will use them again!! Thanks so much guys!!!! Update 05/19: Called and used these guys a second time to move my things. Again, excellent job!! I highly recommend and will use them every time!!

Our move crew was Tre, Q (sp), and I think Josh. Movers were very friendly, professional and fast. They were about 20 minutes late for the appointment but called and said they were in traffic and would be 30 minutes late (so net affect, they were early). They had all the tools they needed and took extra care wrapping up my glass front and mirrored furniture with not only the padding they brought, but also left over moving boxes. Unpacking was into a storage facility where they were also very fast and amazing at getting all of my items into a confined space. My bill was exactly as quoted. First three hours at a set price and every additional hour at a set price. Total move took 5 hours with a 45 minute commute from departure location to destination. Only negative of the move was when the movers moved the piano they didn’t put any padding on the floor. The hard wheels of the skate and the weight of the piano put dents in my wood floor all the way to the front door. I would definitely recommend and will likely use them again when I finish moving from my temporary location.
