Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Should I buy moving insurance?

Your homeowners or renters insurance policy may or may not protect your belongings if they get lost or damaged during a move. If you’re moving valuable items, or if you’re moving a great distance, it could be a good idea to invest in moving insurance.

Interstate movers are required to offer you full value protection and released value protection to help reimburse you in case of damage or loss. If you’re moving within your state, check with your state’s consumer affairs agency to see if your state has rules and requirements regarding moving insurance and valuation coverage.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

I didn't hire TRG and used another company instead. The company had a problem with their truck and were not sure if they were going to get to me to move until the next day. I messaged TRG in a panic and within a short time, they were going to be able to help me with my move! The original company ended up pulling through but I will definitely hold onto TRG Moving and Storage's information for the future. Exceptional customer service!

Where to start! All I can say is these guys are amazing! We had a pretty big move that took longer than expected and they all worked non-stop to make sure the task was completed as fast as possible. Everything they moved was packed safely and securely, and not a single item was damaged upon destination. If you are looking for a moving company, look no further. They are by far the best company I have worked with in all my moves. A+ in all regards.

For our cross-country move (Atlanta to Seattle) Curtis and his team were fantastic! Communicated frequently, super prompt and he even helped us get a shipper for our second car and managed the process for us! I am ready to recommend Helping Hands Moving Company to anyone I know planning a big move!

So here I sit. The owner, Thomas, confirmed the move yesterday but they have not shown up. I have called and left multiple messages with no return phone call. DO NOT rely on this company. I am so disappointed that a company would not call and also not show up.

We did not have a good experience with MyPorter, however the 5 star rating is for the excellent customer service we received from Roosevelt (one of the movers hired for our move). His patient professionalism & work ethic canceled out all of the negative aspects of our move (inventory documented incorrectly, porters coming/going during the allotted time, van wasn't large enough to accommodate all of the furniture, etc). I would 100% use this company again if he was the mover assigned to the project. Thank you, Roosevelt, for making a stressful move pleasant!

For our move, I submitted a request on Thumbtack. Of all the replies I received, Dustin was the only one who volunteered to come out for a quote. And after getting a couple of other quotes from companies outside Thumbtack, On The Move had the best estimate. We needed everything packed as well. They were phenomenal! Everything packed, moved, and unloaded in 2 days. Everything packed carefully, nothing damaged, and furniture out back together. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for your move! Thank you so much Dustin!

The movers were very careful with my items. They took the time to carefully wrap my glass table tops (8) and treated all my furniture as if they were moving their personal belongings. They worked quickly and I was impressed with their speed. Corey and his 2 other guys were very respectful and professional at all times. I would definitely use their company again!

The movers at this company so grotesquely over charged me for hours they didn't work that one of their own movers felt compelled to call me to apologize for how badly I had been ripped off. They charged me for several hours they didn't work and for trip charges that wouldn't have been incurred had they ctually worked all of the hours they had charged me for the previous day. Also, they went to the wrong address, not once, but TWO days in a row. Of course they charged me for the time AND the gas wasted going to a address that didn't even sound like my address. The only good thing about working with this company Is that a couple of the movers were nice and polite and wanted to do a good job despite the laziness of co-workers.

The move didn't go as expected. Movers were 2 hours late and when they arrived they moved like snails according to the person that met them at the starting point. I was advised that they would pack items as well but they brought no boxes to do this. Didn't put all my items back together once they arrived. Tool apart beds and left NO screws for me to later but thing back together. Did go to the third address I needed them to go to because of how long it took them. Mover left trash all over my driveway and in my home when they left. I provided verbal details to the Owner and not on the form that was sent to me because I was dealing with trying to get this move done and burying my father. So I agree that although I didn't state the number of stairs was my fault. (I only said that there were stairs and the top floor). The movers never took responsibility for being late, nor for not providing the packing service that was part of their package, not even the fact that trash was left all over my driveway. I had to wait until the next day for my dining table to be put together and for my sofa to be put together. The company quoted me a flat rate of $120 per hour with a two-hour minimum. I was expecting to pay maybe $500 I ended up paying $900. I still had to go back to the starting point to box up items. I will never use this company again. And yes, I do have pictures of how my home was left after this company left it.

If I could rate this company from experience I would. However, I never got that far. I am a business owner and would never speak to my clients like this. From my view he’s trying to do it all himself to save money. Yet, by doing this he is loosing money. I gave him some honest advice and hope that he takes it. If you want cheap move and are willing to over look customer service, this is your guy!

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The team arrived early and were very professional. They individually wrapped every piece of furniture before loading. I was afraid that I would have to get an additional storage unit (my downsizing efforts are not as good as they should have been...) but these guys packed my storage unit from top to bottom and side to side like a puzzle. They worked hard and fast all day. I would definitely recommend this company and will use them again!! Thanks so much guys!!!! Update 05/19: Called and used these guys a second time to move my things. Again, excellent job!! I highly recommend and will use them every time!!
