I can't thank Next Door enough. They saved the day. I was in a bind when my previous movers did not show up and needed someone in a hurry. They could have taken advantage of me but they didn't. They quoted a fair price, showed up as promised and did an amazing job. It seemed like they were really busy and left quickly to do another job after mine but I think it's because they do such a great job. I never felt slighted and they definitely didn't rush through my job. I have already recommended them to a friend of mine who just closed on her house and is moving in a few months.

These guys get it right. I was moving from an apartment in Midtown to a townhouse in Alpharetta and they were organized, prepared, efficient, and super super professional. I will most definitely hire them again when it is time for my next move.

Vaclin's moving company was fantastic, and I would highly recommend them. They were very flexible when our schedule changed the day of our move, and went above and beyond expectation to make sure our truck was packed effectively and safely. I highly recommend them!

I cannot say enough great things about DA Lowe Movers. I live alone, and was moving apartments within the same complex. I needed help moving my heavy furniture and boxes and I am so happy I had Deitric and his partner to help. They were amazing. He said he has been in the business for 25 years, and you can tell just by how proficient he was during the move. They arrived early (which I loved) and were finished in an hour and a half and honored the flat rate I was quoted. They were courteous and respectful of my belongings and it was honestly the easiest move I've ever done. Quick and easy. I will definitely recommend them to everyone I know, and I will most definitely use Deitric again for any of my moving needs in the future.

The movers did a great job!! This was not your typical move. Long walks, stairs, freight elevators, tons of mechanical work for disassembling and reassembling. The movers worked very well together, great attitude, no complaints or slackers!!! Yes our company will highly recommend for commercial moving!!!

Above and beyond. Ronnie and his team are a must hire for anyone preparing for a move. They were 15min early, wrapped all our furniture in blankets and wrap for protection, worked fast and were very friendly. When Ronnie accidentally left with my apartment fab he went above and beyond, tracked back across Atlanta after his second move of the day and returned it to us. I highly recommend RLJM moving.

Our move was expected to be a pretty short move as I only needed 6 Ikea wardrobes and a Murphy bed moved, and we were literally moving to the apartment next door. So we estimated 45 mins or so tops. The move happened as quickly as expected, but mounting the Murphy Bed to the wall proved to be an incredible hassle. Throughout the entire process Team Movers was incredibly patient, consistently offering up helpful insight and ideas on how to get this to work (they took apart and reassembled the door of the Murphy bed during one of these suggestions), they even waited for me to run to the store to grab some longer screws in an attempt to fix things, and they stayed until the job was completed with no complaints (Approximately 3 hours in total) . I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a team of movers dedicated to getting the job done quickly and efficiently....and even when that's not possible because of difficult furniture items, absolutely making the experience as pleasant as possible.

Compass Liberty Express Jasean takes his moving business seriously so as a customer I take him seriously. He and another mover (both clean cut young guys) picked up hardwood floors from the ware house and delivered inside my house and they moved a number of furniture and boxes for me between 2 properties. All 5.5 hours they were working non stop. Jasean is the one who calls the call the shots. The planning of sequences and time management are good. Price is fair for the job done. If you are concerned about hardwood floor protection during moving, I'd suggest you let them now in advance so they can prepare more pads or have protective disposable shoe cover. Make sure items are lifted up as opposed to being slided over surfaces you want to protect. Thank you Campass Liberty Express!

I had an AMAZING experience with Tate the Great Moving services. I used them for packing and moving. I provided all of my packing materials and hired the staff for packing. They packed my materials with care and labeled all boxes appropriately. I then used them for moving from Acworth, GA to Atlanta, GA. The guys handled all of my items with great care and treated them like they were their own. They packed the truck very meticulously and ensured all of my items were safe during transport. Before this move, I moved from North Carolina to Acworth, GA. The movers I used then damaged a lot of my items. Not only did Tate's crew take extra special care of my damaged items, they also made recommendations for how I could have them repaired and in some cases they made the small repairs for me. Dexter, Will, and Shaheed were GOD sent!! I could not have asked for a better crew and I told Tate that I want the same three guys the next time I move. You will not be disappointed with this moving crew. They have an excellent spirit, and excellent leader, and they truly do LOVE what they do!! Two thumbs WAY up!!!

Service was great. Guys showed up on time and stayed late until job was complete. Jason the owner called during the move to make sure the move was going okay. The guys didn't take a break at all. I had to offer them something to drink. I will say if your moving into a building with an elevator and a long hallway you will need more than 3 hours. I would highly recommend at least 4-5 hours if you don't plan on helping or want a rush job. long hallways really eat into your time.

I highly recommend MyPorter for your moving needs, they completely exceeded my expectations when it came to my recent move (4/30/18)! I hate moving but have unfortunately have had to make several over the past few years. I've never had a terribly negative experience with past movers, per se, but I had just started to assume companies generally under-quoted moving costs initially and you would end up paying more in the end. MyPorter changed my perception of moving companies completely, they actually beat my quoted time by a full hour! My movers were efficient and professional and I cannot thank them enough for their help!

I recently hired Pick Up Movers for a move and was very impressed from the moment I called and spoke to Pierre , until the moving team finished up the job and wished us well in our new home. Moving is a stressful event and from the moment the team arrived at our door, we knew we were in great hands. We were blessed to have Max, Kevin, Peter and Brandon on our move. These guys worked non-stop for 9 hours on pick up. They carefully wrapped everything, moved items quickly and professionally and did not break a thing. The one time a wall was minorly nicked (and I mean minorly), we were told immediately. These guys were professional, hard working, moving experts (I am still baffled on how they got some of these pieces moved), fun to be around and full of integrity. We prayed long and hard before this move and we were very blessed to work with Pierre and his team. Thank you Max, Kevin, Peter and Brandon, you truely made this moving experience a great one. We will be back :-)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
