First of all I had a plumber and he was very good. He unclogged the sink by opening a pipeline at the other end of our home.. He described the work done by the previous plumber. He was honest about the work needed going forward and advised to get the work done soon because the line will clog again based on the material used by the last plumber - he did not offer his services to complete the work needed, but he suggested we get a very good sub to upgrade the very old pipes because the material is no longer available. We are satisfied with his work.

After another plumber came and told me I needed a new toilet and he couldn't fix the problem otherwise. I was lucky enough to have Richard come out. He found a brush stuck in the toilet. Because of him I was able to save hundreds of dollars! What a great guy and wonderful service. He's now my plumber when ever needed.

Robert did what no one else was willing to do. He made repairs to my shower fixtures and solved the problem. Before I got in contact with Robert, I must have called literally dozens of plumbers. No one wanted to do the job. A couple of plumbers I called suggested that I replace my entire bathtub just to get behind the wall to fix the problem. The estimates they gave me ran into the thousands of $$$. Robert came and did what amounted to "precise surgery" in a skillful manner and fixed the problem without having to take out and replacing the entire bathtub. Out of the dozens of plumbers I called, Robert was the only one who called me back when he said he would and actually came to the house and did the job when he said he would, and he did an outstanding job which did not cost me thousands of $$$. It took me several months of trying to find someone with integrity to do the job before I finally found Robert. As long as he's around I won't be hiring anyone else if I need something done in my house.

The job was to redo the inside of the house including removal of all ceiling popcorn, painting 3 bedrooms, upgrading electrical, enhance laundry area and painting, gutting and renovating kitchen & bar including replacing and adding new appliances, changing electrical, painting family room & living room and gutting garage and installing cabinetry, electrical, upgrading lighting and painting; installing new electrical fuse box. They came across a water leak in the laundry that had most likely been there since 1979 when the house was built. As a result the hot water flows at every faucet immediately which it had not ever done from before we moved in. They hauled all debris. Hawaii Custom Install management and personnel are extremely pleasant and competent and they subcontracted to dependable painters, electrician, plumber, movers/haulers, ceiling specialist, cabinetry carpenter--all to get the job done smoother and faster and resulted in employing wonderful small business entrepreneurs in the community. When the kitchen was done there was a leak in the roof that caused damage to the new kitchen ceiling and they fixed it once the roofers were done. For the first time since we moved in in 1986, we feel like we are living in a new house--a wonderful feeling.

This guy is a real.professional. I've seen a lot of plumbers in my day but if you want a real pro this guy is a master plumber. I had a difficult situation that would have been very expensive with another plumber and Nate had multiple solutions for the long term. What I liked about Nate is he is a pro you can trust and all of his multiple solutions for me were all long term solutions and creative in the application towards solving my plumbing problem. His solders were all checked for sturdiness which i appreciated. Thoroughness is a long lost practice in this world but this is a skill and personality trait that Nate has in spades. You will be so happy that you have a plumber for life like I do.I have no doubt Nate is the best Master Plumber in Hawaii and a very cool guy!!

      About

I began my career as a pipe fitter apprentice for the Board of Water Supply. My specialty trade was in pipe fitting and laying and installation of new water service copper lines to homes and businesses. I took an early retirement to move to the Island of Hawaii, working for a general contractor in assembly and construction of prefab homes. I moved on to become a maintenance technician at a 250-room hotel in Waikiki. I also became maintenance manager for a golf course in Ewa Beach. My skills are in repairs, remodeling, new installation of plumbing, detecting water leaks, installation of bathtubs, ceramic tile showers, carpentry, minor electrical work, light fixtures, plugs, circuit breakers, etc. I am a handyman who can repair flooring, plumbing, drywall, painting, and practically anything that requires a repair. I give free estimates.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

      • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
      • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
      • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
