Both Contractors were very professional and did top quality job in cleaning our gutters. Bill throughly explained what was being done. We also asked for estimates for roof, new gutters, siding and new back door. I did not feel pressured to buy but plan on using Affordable Contracting in near future. I highly recommend their services.

RoofSmart installed a metal roof on our ranch house in West Des Moines. The entire experience went smoothly and Chad (owner) was easy to work with. He listened to specific concerns, was prompt with a response and made sure we were completely satisfied. We are pleased with our roof and have already recommended RoofSmart to others.

The Grandview Construction crew and Jeremy were an AWESOME group! They repaired my roof, tore down and repaired my fallen in ceiling, treated for mold, put in new insulation, new drywall, textured the walls, new light fixtures, repaired my front deck railing, put in new carpet and so many other little things as well. They were all so pleasant, hard working, and really knew their craft. They were always on time and cleaned up after themselves. I am having them come back in the spring for a few more jobs. They are very reasonably priced and went out of their way to make sure to keep my costs down. I couldnt have picked a better company! These guys have real SKILLS!~ FAdams-Des Moines, Ia.

Weisbrich construction just completed roofing and siding our garage with metal (squirrels were eating through the wood). Cody was professional and polite during every interaction, and he continually updated us on the project. Cody advised us on decisions that would be cost effective and structurally sound. Our garage looks great, and we keep getting compliments from neighbors and people out walking their dogs.

Greg and his crew did an EXCELLENT job for us. The tore down the old gutters on the house and put up new gutters on both the house and new metal building. They disposed of the old gutters and cleaned up so you couldn't even tell they had been here. Very professional and wonderful to work with.

Roofing job of extending a pipe through the attic and up above the roof sheathing to vent. Byron did a good job and his quote was quite reasonable. Also, the final price did not vary too much from initial quote which was a plus. He finished the job in reasonable time frame. I recommend Byron on your future roofing projects.

Describe the job: I originally contacted the DeWild Construction Company through Angie’s List late last fall to replace my roof due to an unexpected leak. I had several companies come out to place a bid on the job but it was Lyle that impressed me the most. He was extremely professional and confident he could get the job done before the weather turned colder. In fact, the day after the roof was put on the weather turned cold. Lyle explained the job and materials in layman terms and gave me brochures to go over and had a wide selection of shingles and colors/designs to choose from the Owens Corning. He asked me my concerns and we discussed cleanup and service after the job. For cleanup they lay tarp down over the surrounding area of the house and only ask that you mow before they come over to help assist with the cleanup and have a magnetic roller that picks up the nails from the yard and driveway. His crew did a great job taking care of this important detail as I have kids and a dog. Lyle and his crew even roofed the shed so that it matched. As far as service after the job, since it was so late last fall when he replaced the roof, Lyle has personally been here this spring on the roof to inspect it to make sure everything laid down okay and he stays in contact with me periodically. He’s been very dependable, reliable and I always feel he is just a phone call away. I would strongly recommend him to my friends and neighbors. I’ve been so impressed with Lyle’s work ethic and his prices have been so reasonable I had him install insulation in my attic. Lyle explained my older home (built in 1992) likely doesn’t meet the new insulation codes set in in 2004(?) of R49. He was right. I was only R24. He told me about the MidAmerican rebate that saved me hundreds of dollars and he brought it up to code. I would have not known this had Lyle not said something. Now we are enjoying the savings and comfort it brings. Above and Beyond: After Lyle’s crew installed the roof I noticed one of my gates had come out of alignment and wasn’t shutting or opening as easily as it had before. I brought this to Lyle’s attention thinking it would just need realigning. Lyle went above and beyond the call of duty when he hired a gate company to repair the gate. I believe he had one of the poles replaced altogether. Lyle did so much more than I expected to repair the gate to make it right. He does treat you like a family member. From my family to yours: Thank you!

Nick Button replaced the roof on our 2 story home. From scheduling to completion it was about 2.5 weeks. The actual roofing part took 1.5 days. Nick took the time to come back and go over everything that was done since we had been at work while they were installing the new roof.. He was patient and answered our questions. We will definitely use Boulevard Building Company in the future when we need things done to our home

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
