I could not be more impressed with the quality of work done by Altecca. I had them finish my bathroom remodel including tiling and working with me on my custom design and vision.I have hired multiple contractors in the past and these would be the only guys that I would hire back to do further projects in my house.

We hired Apex Home Solutions to do a full remodel on a home built over 100 years ago. The home was in original condition and needed extensive work. I had a pretty general set of ideas about what I wanted done and after going over the general details with John and Theresa we were able to sit down in their full service office and go over details including full design and materials. John and Theresa did a great job working through the general construction details but also the layout and design. Theresa designed the kitchen, made suggestions for materials, color and layout of the finished product. We ended up taking almost every suggestion they made. This was because they were good. We accepted their bid and discussed the work. The project was important to be on time, in scope and on budget. Apex met all items successfully. I would certainly recommend using them; I will again.

Home remodel included expansion of dining room (7.5' x 15.5'); enclosing back porch (12' x 16') as a 4-season room (HVAC); remodel Master Bath; re-tile double-sided fireplace; add 400 sf deck. Around $50K project lasting about 10 weeks (mid July thru beginning of Oct 2013). Exceptional project results. Very detailed-oriented. Excellent communication. Nate was meticulous in his work product, and he made some very worthwhile suggestions that made the project results better, esthetically. He didn't hesitate to ask the Boise City inspectors for a courtesy inspection meeting, on-site, to discuss any construction issues. I was always informed and included in any of these discussions. While I hired some of the subcontractors (electrical and wood flooring), he didn't hesitate to coordinate his work efforts with theirs. His subcontractors (HVAC, Deck Shade Structure, and Painting) did exceptional work, as well. While there were a few 'glitches,' Nate went the extra mile to make things right. Very happy with the project outcome, and all our friends and family are in "awe" of the results. While Nate is "young" (I'm a senior citizen), he has many demonstrable remodeling trade skills, and possesses a great sense of customer service. I would and will hire Nate again, and highly recommend his construction/re-modeling company.

Matt did an excellent job. I felt like he cared much more about building a good fence than making a profit.

Cyrus completed a beautiful custom Trex deck for our home. We couldn't have been happier with the results! He even came on some of our rainy (or sprinkling) days to keep us on schedule. We highly recommend Cyrus for your next project.

We had a total remodel of our kitchen. Scott Collins got us a very good deal on custom cabinetry and had very good suggestions for a choice of Corian countertops as well as wonderful suggestions for re-doing our former recessed florscent ceiling fixture. He has an excellent eye for detail and makes very good suggestions. I also found him to be very conscientious in leaving the worksite very clean before he left for the day. Additionally he came equipped with all tools and supplies needed for the job and didn't have to leave numerous times to get needed items or material. In addition to the kitchen remodel, we had a tubular skylight installed and a solar-power attic fan, which lowered our electric bill in the summer by a minimum of $10 a month. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone who would like to update their home.

I used Shippy Construction on my entire house remodel and was very happy with the finished product. The house went through three phases while we lived in the home, making it challenging. All three phases were on the time and were seamless. Just when you think it's impossible, they made it happen. The knowledge and experience with Shippy Const. was very apparent. Great job!!!

I'm a real estate agent and property investor with over 13 years of experience. Recently I had a project that I was able to split off 2 lots from a parcel and I needed custom duplexes designed for each lot. I've worked with Matt on a couple other large remodels ($100k+) in the past on which he did a wonderful job, so he was the first person I called for this job. He was quick, professional, and came up with several ideas and suggestions that were a great blend of cost efficiency and space functionality for both duplexes. He also helped with the overall site design and lot sizing, which maximized the size of the duplexes, the expected rental rates, and overall ROI. He was quick to respond to phone calls and email requests, and it made my whole experience wonderful. I highly recommend Matt and am very impressed with his work.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
