Dr. Valk has a very flexible schedule which has been very helpful for our busy life. He has been such a positive influence on my son’s learning and his confidence in his math abilities have continued to thrive in his one-on-one tutoring setting. Additionally, Dr. Valk provides lesson feedback and notes to my son's teacher and is able to have a good line of communication with her. Our son finds his unique ability to explain the topics very clearly and ability to show different ways of solving the questions very helpful. Dr. Valk's communication to us and his teacher have been instrumental in helping our son progress in his math classes. He actually said, "mom, I'm starting to like math". This is big for a student who has always dread math class. We are so very pleased with the progress he's made.

Chema is a truly gifted tutor. I hired him to help me with my daughters 10th grade math class that she was struggling with and I was amazed at the improvement she rapidly made - even after only a few sessions with him. Her confidence grew so much I really saw how it made an impact on her other subjects as well in school. Chema is a highly professional teacher. He is trust worthy, great value for money and an all round nice person that children love and relate to. We first met Chema in the school he was teaching at and also got to encounter some of the other students he teaches Physics to and I was blown away how much the students just love him. Hire Chema for your tutoring needs, you will be so pleased you did!

As a returning college student, I found myself having to do math after a 20 yr + break. I am so grateful for meeting Ian. He gives excellent instruction and many different ways to comprehend the math language. He has great patience and is very flexible with my busy schedule. I will most defiantly use him in my future classes and will be on top of my list to hire for my children if they are ever in need of extra help. Thank you Ian!! JMM

Herb has been tutoring our son for two years. He had a D in geometry when he started with Herb. With Herb's help, he pulled his grade up to a solid B. We found Herb's help to be so beneficial that we decided to start with him right at the beginning of this year for Algebra II and he has had a B/B+ in that class all year. In addition to being a great math tutor, Herb is a really nice guy and super flexible, willing to adjust the schedule as needed. We highly recommend Herb!

Puentes was able to accommodate exactly what I was looking for, which was rather specific. I wanted a private tutor twice weekly for an hour at a price I could afford long enough to become fluent. Puentes is priced very fairly, making it not only a great place to learn, but also one that is sustainable long term. Their immersion techniques can be intimidating at first, but I feel that they will definitely work for me, forcing me to use the language so I can learn it better. I would recommend Puentes to anyone considering learning another language.

Mathnasium is a phenomenal place! I am currently a senior at the University of Idaho and these guys were able to help me out with 400 level math classes! I had met with other private tutors who could not help me. Mathnasium is the reason I passed those classes! Thank you!

Dan was an exemplary teacher at my school for two years. He taught our high school math courses to a diverse group of students in an engaging, understandable, and motivating way. The students and staff were sad to see him go. He is one of the best math teachers with whom I have had the pleasure of working. He is committed, professional, and passionate in all he does for students.

I don't require commitments or cancellation notices. Sometimes the student needs help with just one or two assignments, not 30+ hours of tutoring (i.e. over a month). Sometimes scheduling conflicts will pop-up out of nowhere. You never know when your kid is going to get sick. By not requiring long-term commitments, or penalizing sudden cancellations, I can focus more on helping the students.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
