Wendi is a skilled and gifted tutor and I HIGHLY recommend her services. She did an excellent job of preparing our daughter for the ACT test. I haven’t received test scores yet but appreciated the manner in which Wendi broke down complex sections and provided strategies for identifying the correct answers. Our daughter’s confidence level was also increased.

Great tutor! She was able to work around our schedule and helped my son prepare for his ACT. My Son Brian said he thought he did much better on the reading section (of his ACT). He said he used several strategies you taught Him. He also said the math on this past test was much harder than on the first ACT he took, but he was able to finish most it on the test this time. If he takes it again in June I will probably be calling you (depending on his score). I also gave your email address to my friend whose son is Brian's age and preparing for the ACT in June as well. Thanks Again!

Jeff was working with my son on getting ready for ACT this year. My son is a junior at high school. He is a good student, however, wasn't satisfied with his initial ACT score. We found Jeff through Thumbtack based on customer reviews. I'm glad we did. After several lessons with Jeff, my son's ACT score went 5 points up. Jeff is great about building lessons around subjects and topics that require more attention. The test taking strategies that he teaches are definitely very helpful. Jeff is very punctual and responsible. He was willing to accommodate my son's busy schedule. I highly recommend Jeff to students (and parents) who are looking for help with ACT and SAT.

Steve is a wonderful tutor. After only 6 lessons with Steve, our son was able to earn a composite score of 34 the first (and only) time he took the ACT, including 35's in Science and Math. Our son was so happy to have worked with Steve before sitting for the ACT,as he now has the ACT behind him and can focus on his classes and other school activities, rather than on testing and test prep. We very much appreciated how comfortable our son was working with Steve and how confident he felt going into the test.

Amy is doing a wonderful job tutoring my HS daughter for her ACT test. The company is also great to work with and offers great value for the cost of private tutoring. Highly recommend any of their tutors and if he or she is not a match for your child, they will find another one who is.

Excellent ACT/SAT tutor I was referred Dr. Reetika by another mom from my sons class. She truly helped shape his career. She helped my son to prepare both for ACT and SAT to identify which works better for him. In the end my son took both the exams and did well on them. There were times that I had difficulty keeping him accountable but Reetika had a good balance of being a tutor and sounding board for my advice. I recommend Reetika to anyone needing help in test prep or honors classes of their kid

During my junior year of high school, I was struggling to improve my math and science scores on the ACT. But after being referred to Hntsa, my scores quickly improved. Hntsa was able to use visual learning and cogent explanations to help me better understand how to tackle this test. Hntsa believed that practice questions were the key to success; his methods proved to be greatly beneficial. I would attempt practice questions while he was there to patiently explain how to solve the problems when I got stuck. His line of thinking helped to improve the way I looked at the test, and I credit him to significantly improving my scores. Thanks, Hntsa!!

Kevin is the most outstanding tutor I have ever met or even ever spoken with. He is a retired physician who had great teachers during his career and now works with students to try and have a positive influence on their lives. My son did both high school Math and Science tutoring with him AND also did ACT test preparation with him. My son's ACT scores went from 24 before working with Kevin to 33 after working with him for just 3 months! I cannot speak more highly of him. If you want your son or daughter to really excel - you better at least meet with this guy! Darren G. Northbrook, IL

Souradip is a tutor, par excellence! We're grateful to Thumbtack for bringing him into our lives. He's responsive to our children's needs. He's great at explaining and uses various techniques to make sure that they understand the material. Souradip's infinitely patient and never makes them feel less than or embarrassed to ask questions. The children look forward to working with him (now that's a litmus test for a tutor who's doing something right!). They would rather work with him than see a movie! We sought tutoring because our children were struggling and in a matter of a couple of months they're "A" students. That's a testimonial to the caliber of tutor that he is!

I practiced ACT material with Andrew for a couple weeks and improved my score by 4 points. He was on time for our lesson every week, and always knew how to answer my questions. During each lesson, we took a practice test together, and no matter which test we were working on (science, math, english), Andrew was very knowledgeable on the subject. He was also very understanding when I got questions wrong and worked hard to make sure I grasped every concept. Overall, my experience with Andrew was very beneficial, and I would recommend him to anyone

Mr. Glen is the best tutor in the world. He worked with my son and daughter in math and ACT Prep. He supported my daughter in Geometry, Calculus. Algebra II / Trigonometry, Calculus AB and ACT Prep. He supported my son in the same areas plus Algebra. It's is very important to him that your children fully understands the concepts and are not simply working problems by memorizing steps. He truly cares about your children performing at the highest level. There were times if he didn't finish something with them during the hour, he would call the house to follow up. He always keeps my husband and I posted on their progress and he let's them know directly how well they are doing. He really allowed my husband and I to have peace of mind by helping to prepare our kids academically. He is very professional and works with us to accommodate busy schedules by having hours later in the evening. Both my sone and daughter respected Mr Glen and enjoyed what he helped them accomplish. We thank God that Mr Glen is a part of our village.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

        What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

        • English
        • Science understanding and reasoning
        • Math
        • Reading
        • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.
