Susan was great in helping me design my new home. She listened to the colors and theme that I like in my home. She took what I had in my old home (furniture and accessories) and incorporated them into a new style idea in my new home. She brought color swatches and came up with decorating ideas I would not have thought of. I have received lots of compliments on my design and color choices in my new home. I would use Susan again. She made my new home feel very comfortable.

Andrei completely renovated three of our bathrooms. He did an amazing job starting with the design of each of the bathroom. He has a great eye for bringing different materials and colors together. Having Andrei with us, really sped up material and color selections as we were done with selection and purchase for all three bathrooms in about two hours. This was a huge help and not mention a relationship saver :). Now to the work - his team did an excellent job on working through each of the bathroom. Andrei communicated clearly as to what was being done along with any changes that are occurring which may not have been included in the original estimate. We truly enjoyed working with him and his team. Look forward to next time we hire Andrei for next project.

Ilene has a keen sense of color, texture and proportion. She understood my goals very quickly and was able to use her own expertise to guide my taste. She also gave me tremendous choices despite the fact I did not have an unlimited budget. My only regret was that I couldn't do more with her all at once but look forward to having her help me finish my place in the future!

We enjoyed working with Luci and Larry on painting the interiors of our first home- a two bedroom, two bath condo. Luci helped us pick fantastic colors and Larry even repaired numerous small jobs that we didn't expect him to do. We had them install a new light fixture that made the kitchen feel brand new! A few weeks later, after we moved in, they sent the painters back to do touch ups so that we could feel completely pleased with our paint job. So much value added with this company!

We hired Tyler to replace some old sliding closet doors with new bifold doors. None of our openings were standard sizes but Tyler was able to custom order the correct size doors and was even able to give us a deal on a third set of doors. I was nervous about the stain color matching our existing trim but he matched it perfectly! We are very happy with the finished product. Tyler was professional yet personable throughout the entire process. He even followed up with us after about a week to make sure we were satisfied. I highly recommend Precision Remodeling and Home Services!

Brion did an excellent job of helping two people with very different tastes and style make decorating decisions together. He was generous with his time, answering each question patiently (often several times), and following up each post-consultation email/call promptly and thoroughly. He was extremely accessible, frequently responding in the evening and over the weekend. We can't thank Brion enough for sharing his knowledge and design experience with us.

Dave arrived on time for the appointment, even though our initial request was to address interior design specifically for our walls and windows, he provided expert advice on other items including design choices and suggested palette to unify all elements while keeping our Family room focused as a room our children may use. I greatly appreciated his ability to work within our budget. We do not have a lot of money for a whole house make over; David proved great design can be affordable and obtainable within a family friendly budget. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and look forward to continuing working with David in the future. Most highly recommended!

I purchased my very first home and The walls in the house had every color of the rainbow, sometimes 3 colors in one room! Daniela came over for a color consult, paid attention to my likes and dislikes and then took my home and transformed it! From the wall color and wall paper to the furniture and accents she gave me a home I love to sit in. Years later I still come home from work to retreat into the perfect spaces! Her visions are amazing and she’s great to work with!

A friend of mine had her living room done by Panache Interiors, and I was so impressed I contacted Dee to see if my great room could be changed into something more interesting. I am so pleased with the results, my new color scheme, and layout makes me happy every time I walk into the room. My wish to have this space somehow elegant but casual was realized.

Lakeside Interiors, Inc.

I lost one parent and downsized the other (long divorced) and had decided to stay in my parents home. Fern helped me to divest myself of 3 homes worth of furniture and "stuff", choose what to keep, and transformed the house into a whole new place reflecting my tastes (which she also helped me to distill). What impresses people who know me, was the (seemingly) effortless result of a few sentimental antiques showcased amid more modern and uncluttered furniture. One friend's comment, "It is absolutely Kimberlee!" What impressed me, was how quickly Fern absorbed my likes and dislikes, understanding my taste better than I imagined. She convinced me that I would love a dark purple accent wall in the living room, and after all my arguing, she was absolutely correct. Fern is empathetic, creative, and dependable, all huge benefits in a designer/decorator. She makes the collaboration of designer and client virtually stress-free, especially amazing considering this client who did not have well formed tastes... I might like it, not sure, but I like it this way, too, and this one is really comfortable as well, etc. Lakeside Interiors is enthusiastically endorsed for small projects like paint colors, to full overhauls.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
