Chicago's #1 Drum Lessons By Mike Semerau

    (15 reviews)

Simple. CDL (Chicago's # 1 Drum Lessons) is the only one on one drum instruction that offers an extremely original lesson plan on DVD to take home where you can not learn from another teacher, book, etc. Our custom curriculum has been thought out to get a student from point A to point B in their drumming extremely fast, and efficiently. We can also help with a students school band pieces. Just watch some of our sample videos of actual current students. That's our proof! The gratification of helping a student go from not knowing how to hold drumsticks, to playing in a band or recording a CD, or getting a record deal and going on tour just within a few months/years.

    Drum Lessons Chicago

    (9 reviews)

I teach private drum lessons to adults and children ages 8 and up. Whether you are a beginner or have some playing experience I would love to share my knowledge of drumming with you to help you achieve your musical goals. My musical background includes 30 years of playing experience, which includes high school marching band (drum line) and orchestra, and a bachelor’s degree in classical percussion from Wheaton Conservatory of Music, which included orchestra, wind ensemble, and percussion ensemble. I am also an experienced drum set player and have been playing in bands for the past 18 years to the present day, which includes touring and recording. My most current project based in Chicago, is a female fronted Goth, Shoegaze, Post punk band, called Solemn Meant Walks. In addition to Solemn Meant Walks, as of July 2016 I am officially the new drummer for legendary British anarcho - punk band Conflict which originally formed in 1981 in south London. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I have been teaching private lessons full time for the past 10 years. If you are looking for a teacher to help you gain a solid foundation in drumming, I can help you by teaching you the basic tools, such as reading, technique, rudiments, hand foot coordination and independence on drum kit, learning music by ear and transcribing. Having these skills will give you a solid foundation for learning any style of music you choose. If you are a student in a school band and orchestra program, I can help you prepare for solos, auditions, competitions or anything else you happen to be working on including mallet instruments and timpani, as I have much personal experience doing this both when I was in high school and in college. If you have a set of drums and need help setting them up or tuning them but you are not sure about lessons yet, I would be happy to help you get set up and tuned with no obligation to sign up for lessons. TEACHING LOCATIONS Studio lessons, (student travels to me) are located in the West Loop in Chicago near Ogden Ave. and Lake Street. My studio is fully equipped with 2 full drum kits, snare drums, practice pads and a PA. In home lessons, (lessons in which I travel to you), are available on the north side of Chicago and in the north suburbs of Chicago near the lake. Some of those suburbs include: Arlington Heights, Lake Forest, Deerfield, Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, Evanston, Lincolnwood and Skokie. Also more recently, the near west suburb of Oak Park and the Chicago south shore neighborhood of Hyde Park. My availability for both studio and in home lessons depends on my current schedule at the time of a new customers request. There are several things I like most about my job. For myself, I love being my own boss and having the flexibility of my time. This helps with scheduling a lot because I'm in several different musical groups / projects. Also teaching has really helped me become a better musician. I learn from my students all the time. For the Students, I love the fact that I'm making a difference in someones life whether the student is a young kid just learning and discovering, a high school student or adult who is getting very serious about a musical career, or someone who is just doing it for a hobby. Having a musical instrument that you can play really makes a positive impact on someones life. I know it did for me. I didn't start playing drums till high school. If it hadn't been for my awesome band director letting me try out the percussion section as I only had a piano background at the time, I might not have become a drummer for so many years, gone on the tours I have been on, played on the stages I have played on, made the close friends I have and influenced many of the students I've had past and present.

My strong suit is that I have the experience of playing drums in Chicago Blues bands, and working with singers. I also understand how to develop improvisational skills for live performance. I can teach the skills for a drummer to play successfully with musicians not only in Blues, but with Rock, R&B, Surf and Country bands as well. I love to see a student progress and get better at playing drums! Seeing the student play drums and watching their skills improve is a tremendous honor for me as a teacher.

  • Drum Lessons Chicago

    (6 reviews)

Phil was born and raised in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, where he began studying drums privately at age 10. Shortly after, Phil was awarded a scholarship to perform in a drum ensemble at The Sherwood Conservatory of Music where he learned to play several different percussion instruments. In high school, Phil played in the Gordon Tech Jazz Band where by his senior year was awarded the Semper Fidelis Music Excellence Award, the Louis Armstrong Music Award, and several student of the month awards. During his junior and senior years, he played in one of Chicago's first live band hip-hop groups called The Spy. Since then, he has played in several bands and projects around Chicago covering a range of styles. Phil is one of the founding members of Colonel Stem who from 1998 to 2003 released three albums, toured extensively, and shared the stage with bands such as Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Suicidal Tendencies, and Chevelle. Phil is also a Los Angeles College of Music grad where he studied with Ralph Humphrey (Frank Zappa and Natalie Cole), Mike Shapiro (Sergio Mendes and Al Jarreau), Dave Beyer (Christopher Cross and Joan Osborne), and Joe Porcaro (Stan Getz and TOTO) among others. Phil has over 10 years of teaching experience, was on staff at Chicago's School of Rock from 2008 to 2012, is a member of The Percussive Arts Society, and owns Beef Custom Drums where he builds and restores drums. Currently, Phil is working on putting together a website packed full of free drum lessons, tips, and drum-related news stories. Phil has a wealth of knowledge in all things drums! About the School: The Impossible Drummer School of Drums Since 2003, The Impossible Drummer School of Drums has been guiding beginner, intermediate, and advanced drummers to where they want to be in their musical endeavors. Our qualified instructors have several years of teaching and playing experience. From ages 8 and up, we offer private one-on-one drum instruction in a laid-back environment. Since each student learns at their own pace, the curriculum is custom tailored with their specific needs and goals in mind. Our staff uses the most up-to-date playing techniques and learning materials available. Our curriculum is created entirely by us and has proven to be very effective with our students. Upon enrollment, each student is given their own personal (password protected) web page to access their instructor's lesson notes, assignments, and supplemental videos or audio examples for reference. In addition to this feature, we will soon be rolling out free video or audio curriculum that works in conjunction with our private lessons. Again, this is provided at no extra cost to our students who take private lessons. Lessons are once weekly for 30 or 60 minutes. Our classes are designed for you to learn or improve upon your drumming by learning the following concepts: * Hand technique * Foot technique (Moeller for bass drum) * Time keeping (playing beats) * Drum fills * Odd meter and note grouping concepts * Music styles (rock, funk, hip-hop, etc.) * Sight reading * Song analysis thru listening and playing along * Road mapping and transcription * Creative and improvisational drumming concepts * Drum tuning, head replacement, and general kit maintenance * Electronic drumming thru the use of sequencing software, MIDI, or live with the use of trigger pads and much, much more!

My work stands out because I have had experiences from a young age that have allowed to me to reconnect with the original seed of passion and discovery for music. Even if I'm working with a student who is 50-I try to bring out that sense youthful energy that drives us to try new things and enjoy with reckless abandon. It doesn't feel like a job at all. Music is my passion and my home. I take it everywhere with me, and it never turns "off" or "on." I love to see my students grow-because it always proves to be a true testament to patience, hard work, and focus.

ESP Drums

What do you love about your job?

Sharing drumming history, the American drumming story, the rock history, the jazz history and the human connection with this ancient form of communication is incredibly rewarding. Students feel an instant connection to controlling the noise created from their efforts and the study of controlled noise making helps the brain, body and spirit.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

My first drum teacher started me on the path of helping others unlock the drumming within each person. His passion for jazz, discipline, education and helping others discover the joy of drumming has been with me since my first private lesson in 1980.

Describe your most memorable project.

One student was wounded in Afghanistan protecting a general in a war-torn province. He was severely injured, and his life was changed forever defending our country. He has not slowed down; he went mountain climbing, skydiving, drumming and living life to the fullest. It has been an honor to tutor him through learning how to play drums again.
