I was planning a project to refinish existing hardwood floors, add new hardwood to a dining room, living room, stairway and upstairs hallway. I received 5 quotes (through Thumbtack) and chose Trust Flooring because I felt most comfortable with Andrean when he was here to get our measurements and while discussing the scope of our job. Their pricing is very reasonable, craftsmanship and quality is exceptional, and always on time. Even the new flooring (that was previously carpet) matches the existing flooring perfectly. It looks as if the hardwood has always been there. I would definitely recommend Andrean and Trust Flooring to handle your flooring project.

Chano and his crew installed and finished new hardwood flooring in our house and we love it! His crew did an outstanding job and was very clean. They were very attentive to what we needed, easy to get in touch with, and their price was very fair. I also really appreciated him making a suggestion about what he thought would look better in my house which actually made the project cost LESS money. My wife and I felt like his main concern was making us happy with the job and not making as much money as he could squeeze out of us. I would happily recommend A Plus Decorating to anyone and will definitely use them again in the future!

Wanted to get Bamboo Flooring in my home in Glencoe, and when I called Studio Floors to enquire, they were really professional and informative about the advantages and disadvantages to getting that type of flooring in my home. Once the installation started, I was surprised by the speed and efficiency that Studio Floors and Peter worked at. What a wonderful bunch of people, and definitely a company you're going to want to call if you ever need any type of flooring done in your home. Professional, friendly, speedy, and their work is magnificent. I don't ever remember having floors this wonderful looking!

We hired IDC flooring to rip up carpets and refinish our entire 4 bedroom home that we had just purchased. Some areas had hardwood flooring underneath and some areas had tile or sub floor. Peter and his crew turned up at 8 am the morning after our closing and began ripping up all the old carpeting at breakneck speed and set to work sanding. We increased the scope of the job when we decided we didn't want our tile foyer and asked them to rip it up and install wood flooring. They worked through the entire weekend to get the job done for us to be able to keep our moving schedule on track. I was amazed when I saw the new floors they installed - the transition areas are perfect - I can't even tell what was old and what was new. We chose dark walnut for our stain and we LOVE it. Our refinished floors have breathed new life into our 1950s house - what a great way to get started with our transformation. This crew works hard, fast and are very good at what they do. Their pricing was also competitive and Vasi was able to quote the work based off the property listing photos and square footage.

FIVE STAR service! Look no further if you are looking for a floor guy. As mentioned in all the other posts, Radu was always on site and on time and explained everything in detail pre and post construction. I am very particular but couldn't be happier with the finished product! I will certainly recommend Radu to anyone I know that is looking for new installation or refinishing.

Michael Carso, the owner of Advanced Flooring is a thief. Beware! He asks for the money for the materials up front. Foolishly, I paid him $3700.00 cash up front in order to get a discount. Big mistake!!! He took the money and now 9 weeks later, the job has not even started and he will not respond to texts or return my phone calls. I will now have to report him to the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General consumer fraud division and file a lawsuit against him for the return my $3700.00. Based on my experience, I have to believe that all of the positive reviews on this website are posted by Mr. Carso himself or others on his behalf. Let my experience be cautionary tale. Whatever you do, do not hire Michael Carso and Advanced Flooring. He stole $3700.00 from me. Don't let that happen to you.

Sherman Flooring installed wood floors in my bedrooms. They completed the installation and finishing of the floors on time. Neal spent time discussing my color choices and finishes before completing the job. I expected to have a huge mess when they were done. This was not the case at all! I appreciated the work and would recommend them to my friends.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

I'm not really sure why this business has poor reviews. My request was handled quickly and without pain. The floors where a complete mess and destroyed by the previous tenant. I am highly impressed with the work performed by Substrate. They worked fast and did an exceptional job for a fair price. I will definitely keep them on the books and use them again for future concrete work and other services they offer. Adrian was great to work with. I will post better photos of the work done once the store is finished. But for now, they protected the flooring so construction could begin. I only say this to other customers, hire them! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
