My job consisted only of packing and moving some heavy furniture within my home - not moving between homes. RMS came on time, did an excellent job, and communicated with me in a very professional manner. Marcus was an example of what I would look for in a vendor.

It wasn't the price that hooked me nearly as much as the reviews I read, and I am sooooo glad I went with Extreme Movers. The name really suits them! I am a senior citizen recuperating from a shattered femur so this move could not have come at a worse time. A friend did a lot of my packing for me, but I didn't notice that he had put my crystal wine glasses wrapped in bubble wrap in a reusable grocery bag!!! When I found them after the move----not even a tiny chip!!! Antonio and Joe were amazing!! They went nom-stop til everything was done and to my liking. If I ever have to move again, God forbid< I would hire no other company than Extreme Movers and would recommend them to anyone moving!!!

Absolutely fantastic! The movers called approximately 15 min before they arrived to let me know they were close. The team of 3 were happy and very friendly. We did a walk through of my house, so they could get a plan of the best way the truck would be loaded and then got to work hauling things out. I must say that the level of service of Apex far surpassed what I expected (I've never used movers and only ever heard horror stories) but Nicolas, Nico, and Robert took excellent care to wrap and blanket all my items. They even took the time to wipe down some furnature before packing it, so it would be clean at my new place. I honestly could go on and on about how fantastic the experience was. Really made moving less stressful than it could have been. I would highly recommend Apex to anyone looking to have a good moving experience.

Used their services in our main office building in Chicago. Did really great job. U could see the difference right away, they are also reasonably priced, fast and nice. Can recommend them to any office building or even residential, cause I don't think anybody ever cleaned or washed windows in my apartment even we do have cleaning service every week)

The move itself went really smooth. The 4 movers worked really quick moving a townhouse in Brookfield to a house in Homer Glen in 3 hours. My one complaint would be the charges for tape and other materials I thought were included in the packing materials portion of the quote. They excessively wrapped every last item which used a ton of tape and boxes we didn't need, which added a lot to the cost. But still this was a fair price for the move and a good job.

I have moved 6 times in the last 14 years. 5 were interstate and this 6th was within state. Even then the work requires skill, dedication and care. I will admit that I found "Alliance Moving & Storage" to be the best so far in my experience. I had a crew of 4 from them to provide me & family with full packing service. Overall it took 6 hours but they did a great job, right from being on time, disassembling certain furniture, wrapping, packing, moving, delivering, unpacking & assembling, all with great care. The crew lead Alex is a great guy to work with, attentive and directing as required his team very well. Together they did a fantastic job without breaking or damaging anything in the entire process. I would recommend "Alliance Moving & Storage" to my friends or colleagues or to anyone for that matter, who need a really professional Moving service to take care of their goods, as if its their own, during a move. Very happy that I took their service.

Jaime and Kevin and the full crew at Chicagoland Moving & Storage including the owners were phenomenal to work with! They packed two truckloads efficiently and professionally, carried all of the furniture and boxes down three flights of stairs in the pouring rain! The packing quality was the best we have every experienced - nothing broken and well cared for! They delivered the next day after a long drive to our new home in Tennessee. We cannot say enough good things about Jaime and Kevin. Truly professionals who were kind and hardworking! Highly recommended!

The movers who came were well behaved and polite. I lost one belt and trouser so far of what i know. May have been left in the wardrobe box. The packing and handling was very good. They arrived on time. Except the casters for one table, everything else was intact. They even removed a door in one of the rooms to make room for the furnitureto get in and then put the door back. Overall, it was a great experience and i appreciate the work the guys did during the move.

First and foremost, they were very prompt to respond to my initial inquiry and helped me out when the app booked the incorrect time. They showed up on time and worked very hard for the time that I needed them. They were polite and also were overly cautious with my things, making sure to wrap them well before packing. I would definitely use them again and would high recommend them to anyone needing help moving within the Chicago area.

These guys were very professional. I started my conversation with Lee to book my move and he was very responsive at all times. The guys who helped me move Alan, Rudy, and Taiwan were an awesome team. They went above and beyond the call of duty. They made sure that they did everything speedily. They also ensured that our stuff were safe. When packing our PODS container, they even thought about making sure that there is minimal shift by stacking things like "tetris" for minimal movement. To top this off, they're prices were very reasonable. The quote was very accurate too with no hidden cost. I'd highly recommend them.

I was in the process of moving and needed help packing and organizing. My house was in shabmbles and I didn’t know where to begin. Polina came to the rescue! She helped organize and pack all our dishes, clothes, and antiques. She was so efficient and made it look so easy at the same time! Then once I moved into my new home, she also helped unpack everything and was able to organize everything for me, saving me the headache of figuring out what would go where. She’s great! People should definitely consider reaching out to her for her organizational skills.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
