Reese was outstanding. Start to finish. Called a few days before to reconfirm. Called the day before to set the time. Showed when he said he would. Reese and Mike hung 3 48" IKEA Besta cabinets horizontally side by side by side in my living room for 12 total feet. When the 3rd cabinet was hung and it turned out to be 1/16" low they shrugged their shoulders and said don't worry we'll get it right. And they did. Totally level and plumb. He adjusted the cabinet doors to hang straighter, too. It looks fantastic and my wife is thrilled. I built the cabinets and thought that I could probably hang 'em. My wife insisted that I don't try. She couldn't have been more correct. Not a chance would I have gotten them to look so seamless. I think his price was more than fair, even low. I paid him 30% more because of the great job and the true scope of work involved. Keep him busy.

Ron has done many home improvements for me over the years and has helped to make my home look great! He has done everything from electrical (changing all my lighting in my house and one of them was from a 2 story entry way Yikes!), plumbing ( new kitchen sink, garbage disposal and sump pump) to adding crown molding and glass to my kitchen cabinets and now they look custom. He is friendly, prompt, very fair pricing, very knowledgable in all home improvements and best of all he is a perfectionist. He will not leave the job until it is perfect and the customer is very happy. He did new tile in my mom's kitchen and now she loves him too! I've delt with many contractors over the years and really Ron is the best.

I hired mark Knowles on thumbtack to fix a jarred lazy Susan corner cabinet. The cabinets are from the 70s, but still in great shape, except that one mechanism for that one cabinet. Parts were hard to find, but Mark went out of his way to find the right part, at a very reasonable price. He, in turn, supported a self employed, small business vendor. When he received the part, he called me immediately to set an appointment for the install. Mark was on time as promised, was personable, and very experienced with the repair that was done in a matter of minutes. I was thrilled to be able to use the cabinet again. Thank you, Mark. I would highly recommend you to anyone and hire you again for future needs.

Walt made open shelf cabinets, hung 20 shelves, and installed beadboard for my office. He was quick to reply to all communications, professional and always on time. We made a few adjustments to the projects and he was very accommodating and willing to change things. Overall a great job at a reasonable rate, with the work done by a super friendly guy. I would definitely recommend him.

I had my custom cabinets made by K Cabinets. Anthony and Sam are the nicest people ever! I worked with several contractors throughout my home rehab, and they are the ones that stand out most. They really care about their craft, and really go the extra mile to make sure you are happy. I'm thrilled with my new cabinets! The quality is outstanding. From start to finish, they helped me with my vision of what I wanted, and now I finally have my dream kitchen. Lastly, Sam loves making cabinets. He takes pride in his craft, and makes sure everything is perfect. I'm so happy I hired K Cabinets!

Dan is a class act: a courteous, skilled craftsman and professional, who actually listens to his customers and partners with them in designing and installing quality cabinetry, tailored to whatever space you need. We couldn't have worked with a nicer, more skilled professional than Dan. Work with him, and you won't regret it. Hiring him to design and install built-ins for our kitchen and living room has been the best decision we've made while updating our townhouse. Dan reached out almost immediately after we found him on Thumbtack. He remained accessible and responsive throughout our entire engagement -- traits that set him apart from your average contractor. From our first meeting where he evaluated our space and needs, he discussed potential options and provided some great ideas on what would fit our spaces best. Our kitchen required an entire wall of built-in cabinets, drawers, and shelves, all of which Dan had great ideas for. Meanwhile, our living room required a smaller, but more complicated set of cabinets and shelves to fit an awkward space. Three months after our initial consultation, Dan arrived to install these custom cabinets and finished the job in just a day and a half, working at a speed I had never witnessed in previous builders with whom I've worked. Just a day a later, he was all finished. We now feel like our kitchen and living rooms are complete, and we have Dan to thank for helping us make our house feel more like home.

I hired Matt to remodel the kitchen (removal of old countertops and cabinets and install new ones). After watching him work for couple days, I was convinced about the quality of the work and gave him contract to remodel bathrooms as well. His quote was reasonable and he acted professionally. I would be happy to rehire him on future assignments.

My wife and I bought a house that was a bit of a fixer-upper in Chicago. The built-in hutch was showing a lot of wear in the finish, and the original wood work in the kitchen and dining room were looking pretty dismal. We were recommended Fay Furniture by some friends after they had worked with them to completely refinish all of the wood in their home. Within a day of calling to set up an appointment, the Fays were at our home looking at the wood and discussing possibilities with us. We had some ideas about the color we were looking for (a darker espresso that still showed the wood grain - it matched our furniture) and they were off. It seemed like a huge job, but they were finished within three weeks. That's all the trim around the floors and ceiling, the hutch, and the kitchen cabinets. The level of detail was simply amazing - the color of all of the refinished wood in both rooms matches perfectly with our furniture, and they were absolute perfectionists when it came to making sure we were satisfied customers. So what else can I say? Being a small, family-run business, they were extremely attentive to our needs, gave us an amazing price ($150 less than the nearest of 3 quotes), and left us with a beautiful home. They have made customers for life!

He is a former house inspector. This is an extremely valuable perspective when you consider making changes to your home. He is thoughtful and measured. He completed several extensive projects in my home: replacing wood flooring in my entranceway with tile, refacing my fireplace surround where he demolished existing large boulder stones and replaced with sleek flat tile and even suggested I lower the hearth to the floor for a more modern look. He shrunk the footprint of an oversized kitchen island that involved moving cabinetry and plumbing and preparing the base for a new top and he helped me redo my powder room and replaced my '80s mirrored cabinet fronts with custom stained wood. I am happy and very pleased with the work he has done on my home. He made a number of suggestions about how to maintain my home going forward. I appreciated this expertise.

Nick, We would like to thank you and your entire team for the great job you did on our kitchen project. Starting with Alan helping us navigate through the overall kitchen design and canbinet and countertop selection, through all the modifications we requested on our first floor to the final cabinet installation. You electricians, plumber, trim carpenter, drywall crew and tile crew all did a great job, not to mention your hardwood floor guys. When we first contacted you we had no idea that you offered all these services. We made some changes during the project and you still completed everything when you said you would and at the price you quoted. What a great job, we could not be happier. Thanks again Mike and Aldona Rogers

Stonehenge contractors do terrific work for a very reasonable rate. Rory James & his team perform in a professional manner and their work is 1st class. They did a kitchen/breakfast room remodel for us that first involved the demo (removing all the old tile and cabinets), and then installed new tile, cabinets, dishwasher, some plumbing rework for a multiple sink design and then face brickwork installation behind our industrial kitchen stove. The job turned out better than we imagined and in less time than expected. Rory also installed a temporary kitchen counter-top and small sink so we have a functional kitchen until the granite counter-tops come in a few weeks. At that time Rory will come back to hook up the permanent sinks and install the back-splash tile. We will definitely use Stonehenge again when we remodel the master bathroom and also recommend them to anyone that is doing any type of home remodel/improvement project. John & Bonnie C. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
