Spoke with Joe - he came out and saw work that needed to be done, was going to work with roofers to repair stone chimney. - then disappeared and never called back to say he could/couldn't do the job - nothing.

I hired General Roofing after meeting with Vasyl. He was very informative of the process and not a pushy salesman. I had hail and wind damage and had to work with my insurance company. Vasyl and his team showed up timely and cleaned up great. After tearing off the top layers, roofers often find damaged sections of the wood sheathing which must be replaced before the new roofing goes on. However, he told me I did not need to have the wood replaced because it was in good condition. I had roofing done prior 13+ years ago and I believe the roofing co I used at that time took advantage because they added many additional costs in this area not covered. I ran into time delays with the insurance company and Vasyl has worked with me all along the way. I would highly recommend Vasyl and his team at General Roofing. Reliable and honest! Lise T.

Two roofers came to repair a leaking roof. Problem persisted. These guys came through, did a thorough inspection, found a leak in a balcony door frame and fixed the problem. No water so far after 6 months.

In contacting Top Notch, they were quick to contact me back; they were on the other side of town at a job but said a time that they could come over and give a quote, after seeing the deck. That same day I had a quote in my hand, I agreed to their price and they said they could start the next day. And they showed up! (which, if you have had ANY experience with handymen, roofers, etc....they do not always show up!) They showed up ON TIME, worked hard, and said that they could finish up the next day, and they did. This was a wonderful Mother's Day present that was finished on Mother's Day by a couple of really good businessmen. I would recommend Top Notch!

Lonestar Roofing was great. Sam and Steve are awesome. We had some major ice damming and subsequent leaks into all six townhouse units during the snow storm of February 8th and 9th. Sam responded immediately to my call and Steve was out within the hour. We had a quote within an hour after that and they started work the next day. We would not have made it through that emergency without them. I had called multiple roofers that day and many returned my call after Lonestar had completed all of the work. They take pictures while they are working so that you know exactly what is going on during all phases of your project from the damage to the repairs to the finished product. I highly recommend them.

As an architect, I was looking for the right person to help me with my complete re-roofing project in Naperville and after talking to over 8 contractors I had selected Joe of Fox Restoration because I trusted him and knew that he would do it right and fix any concerns that I may have...bottom line I was right, the project was perfect and he did take action when it came to my input and concerns...he not also showed up everyday to supervise his team but at the end of each day, after his crew left the job site, he even went as far as to do extra cleanup work to make sure the property looked orderly and was safe of any debris and nails on the ground. I would without any hesitation recommend Fox Restoration for any existing or new roofing project...[Thanks so much Joe, you were indeed a true professional who is detailed oriented like myself!] All the best, Alex

As a business owner I have had some problems with roofers in the past, so when I hired Shield I was a little nervous and worried that they might not stop the leak or honor the warranty but it was a emergency so i took the chance. Well its been almost a year and i am very pleased with the work, I had some water come in right after a big storm and I called them in to honor the warranty they got here within a hour and when they checked the roof the problem was not the roof but the gutter that i had someone else install. They fixed the gutter and I never had a problem after that. If I ever need any other work done I will give them a call. Thank You

We Worked with Steve We had a roof leak on a flat roof. We had gotten about 4 estimates. We met with Steve and he was very friendly and professional. He was fair in pricing and gave us a 2 year warranty on a re- roof job. ( not many contractors will do this on a re- roof). We gave him 50% percent down and the rest on completion of the roof. The crew showed up on time , did a great job, clean up ( no mess) and then Steve came back to make sure we were happy. I am always worried when dealing with roofers but Steve, kept his promises and excueted the job perfectly. We will be using him again to seal the roof in 2 years and then do a complete tear off. Any roofer can do asphalt shingles but it takes an experience roofers to do a flat roof as often times requires using a torch to seal materials. We are very thankful that we found this company. They did job in timely manner. I love the way everything was organized. Material was delivered the same day roofers arrived. Everything was done professional. I was informed along the way about progress of my roof project. They really did good job. I recommended them to my friends and family. One of my friends already has hired them once he saw the job they did in my place. Their pricing is better than others. Very good job.

Joe's work was outstanding. We asked him to fix a leak, sending him up to the roof to inspect, and he readily identified the second and worse leak, thereby passing the test! He was honest, ethical, polite, communicative, and did exceptional work for us. His pricing was fair and he had many alternative ways to fix things to match our budget. We are now glad to have Joe as our roofer, and he is also going to do some siding for us in the near future as well. Thanks Joe!!!

My husband and I worked with Joe in GreenLight Construction Group. He really went above and beyond our expectation. He's very professional and knowledgeable about what he's doing. Working with him, you can tell that he has been done this for a really long time and very trustworthy. He helped us to save money, meanwhile gave us the best quality of work. Before choosing to work with him, we consulted at least four other roofers, so we know the average price of replacing our roof. What GreenLight quoted us was very reasonable and even cheaper than others. Joe also worked with our adjuster, he helped us saving huge amount of money by teaching us how to talk with our insurance company step by step. That was extremely helpful for us especially because both my husband and I are from China and first language is not English. In a totally different country and not knowing a lot people in Great Chicago area, it was very heartwarming to have a person like Joe who's very passionate about what he's doing, responsible, care and helping us as a friend. We really appreciate the work GreenLight did for us, and very thankful about them caring their customers like their friends. They finished the work for us yesterday, and it looks fabulous. According to our experience, we highly recommend GreenLight Construction Group, especially Joseph, to anyone who need construction in their house.

Aaron delivers professional excellence in the work he provides. Timely estimate and got to the work quickly and finished it quickly which was a pleasant surprise. I've dealt with roofers in the past and they can be a pretty shady bunch but Aaron brought real integrity to an industry with that in short supply. I highly recommend his services.

Welsh Windows and Roofing is both professional and courteous. The estimator arrived on time and did a thorough inspection. When the Insuracne Inspecter came the following day, the owner/operator himself attended the meeting to assist me in navigating through the process! Very impressive. The work will begin as early as next week! Very pleased I went with Welsh!

These guys were great. We have a very large roof on our home which was damaged during a storm. They put two teams of roofers on it and had the old roof off and the new one on in two days. They cleaned our yard immaculately every day. Dave also helped us with our insurance claim. All in all, a terrific experience. Very professional and a great value. I would recommend Ranger Exteriors to anyone.

I wasn't looking for a cheap roof from a fly by night roofer so I got a few quotes and theirs was the fairest. Got a brand new roof in one day and they left the yard cleaner than my gardener does!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
