This will be a long review, here's the key points if you want to read less. Kanthaka: 1. Is more affordable than I thought (cheaper than a gym membership) 2. Produced the best workouts I've ever had, adapted to my fitness/health goals 3. Is a lot safer than just hiring a solo trainer 4. Is not good if you are looking for the social environment of a gym membership (but great if you prefer workouts away from ogling or judgement) 5. Is stupidly easy to use, and the platform has great customer service In short, it is an amazing value if you're looking to get in shape and value real human interaction with an expert who will respect your goals/limits. It would likely not be useful if you prefer to go to the gym to meet people more than work out (a legitimate gym purpose, not trying to be trite). Details: I was somewhat leery to hire a personal trainer, it seemed like an expensive and needless thing. I was a college athlete and have run my entire life. I hit middle age, and find my health goals are, well, sub-optimal, but I hate the thought of going to a gym that seems to have a meat-market feel and is expensive when you add in trainers on site (membership plus trainer fees add up). I didn't think hiring a trainer would really help me get in shape, and would be a needless and expensive folly. I was wrong. I booked on Kanthaka for an early morning session. I workout between 6:30 and 7:30 before work, using a small gym and showers in my office building. My trainer met me there and was early for our appointment (note: you'll find some trainers are always early, some always on time, and some struggle, so get into a good routine with one you like). She worked me over like a red-headed stepchild. I wanted to strengthen my core (I'm a runner, all leg). She responded with what I needed, and I was amazed at how small changes in my body stance, mechanics, et cetera, made my workout challenging to say the least. I was gleefully sore, and now see the value of a trainer. A couple of unforeseen plus items: 1. Trainers will come to you and bring all necessary equipment for the workout you're looking for. This is a big plus if you don't want to buy a gym membership or a bunch of stuff that will be sitting around your house. 2. The actual cost of using a trainer once a week is less than a gym membership at most gyms. 3. I'm married and prefer going with a personal trainer so I can avoid feeling like I'm being ogled-over or judged for my weak core strength in a public place (read: gym) 4. Using a trainer from the platform comes with insurance and coverage if, heaven-forbid, something happens. It is nice to know there is a company behind the people I'm inviting into my home. They screen and vet people, plus I can see reviews to know who sucks before I invite them over. I'm sure it's not a perfect system, but it sure beats the alternative. Katakana makes me feel safe. The challenges are: 1. Finding the trainer that works for you. I got really lucky on my first trainer, she is a gem, and I plan to stick with her. I did schedule with a different trainer, and he cancelled the day before (idk why) so I booked a new trainer for the same time and everything worked out. A friend had to try a few trainers on Kanthaka before she found the right match for her. Not a deal killer here, just manage your expectations going in. There are amazing trainers on the platform, find the one that works for you. Pro-tip: respond to the emails you get and ask for help if you don't like your trainer, they will help you and have customer service that is WAY better than I expected. 2. I know a lot of people who love going to gyms to meet people and workout. Nothing wrong with that. If that is important to you, then by all means, do so; this app isn't for folks like you (unless you still value the training part for your fitness goals away from the gym, of course). Sorry for the long review, hope you find this helpful.See more

Dan has been training me for the past 8 weeks and since we started working together, I've seen an incredible improvement in my strength, and my figure--this week I was able to fit back into my favorite pair of work pants that I haven't been able to fit in, in a year! When I first met with Dan I hadn't worked out in literally 2 years and was really nervous about all of it; however, Dan devoted an entire session to simply understanding me, the current state of my health, my habits, and helped me define where I wanted to be in my ideal future state. Dan then put together a customized program to ensure we could get there. As a woman, my one of my biggest concern was around "bulking up" from weight training as my body type lends itself to this if I'm not careful. I shared this with Dan and despite what I was sure would happen after the weight training, he's somehow made plan that made me smaller and noticeably toned up, and definitely not bulkier! In parallel, Dan has also really helped me with my poor eating habits--I'm a busy executive with little time to care or prepare food that is consistently healthy--and I sure do love Chicago cuisine. But every visit Dan would casually ask me what I planned to eat for the week and then give me directives on best options, grocery store lists, crackpot recipes, how to store my food, when to prepare it, and even where I can stop on the way home to get what I need for the next day :). . Dan has been a God send and reinvigorated my belief that I can take care of my health, actually meet my fitness goals, and truly enjoy it. I've absolutely loved, enjoyed, and seen results from every single session with Dan. I can't rave enough about how great a trainer he is and his attention to every aspect of his clients fitness, and overall well-being!!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
