Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

First time hiring movers and we are happy we had a great experience. Door 2 Door was very responsive and informative while planning which I appreciated. On moving day, the movers themselves were hard workers and very professional. The whole move went smooth even through a few unexpected obstacles. Our moving stress went from high to very low thanks to Door 2 Door. Definitely recommend.

I enjoyed working with Granat LLC -- they were on time, professional, and handled my furniture with great care. I would recommend them for any moving job that you may have. I used them for "micro-moving" services (only a couch and loveseat), but I would trust them to do a moving job of any size. Great value for my $$ too.

These guys are the real deal! Called for a last minute move and they accommodated me with no problem! Day of move they arrived on time and needed no assistance to get working. They were fast and efficient! All of my things arrived in perfect condition and all I needed to do was point to where the boxes should go. Above all, they were so kind and hardworking. The easiest move I’ve ever had! A++++

No "0" stars available. They cancelled within 24 hours of my move, apparently due to "double booking". Then attempted to blame me for not checking me email expeditiously enough. Alfredo seemed nice enough on the phone, but unacceptable business. He even stated that he hopes they can assist me with future moves. Seriously? Thanks for wasting my precious time.

Adam will move your equipment of any kind. He doesn't carry moving insurance. I know becuase for 3 months I have been dealing with "Construction Insurnace" he has for his "construction company" that WILL NOT cover any items moved. He has broken my commercial ice maker that was not strapped down or situated properly in the truck and has tipped over and smashed completely. Adam will scream at you and somehow try to pin the accident on me. DO NOT HIRE APEX PINNACLE for anything!! No Insurance and will spin any issue/accident on you!! He owes me $5,000 for a new piece of equipment that he is trying not to pay. See you in court!

Super easy to coordinate the piano move and at a highly competitive price. I would definitely work with Tom and his company again (and I will be doing just that for future tuning). A consummate professional.

These guys were great! An hour and 15 minutes late but probably because they had another job to do so I understand. We had to cancel on them last minute last weekend but they took it in stride and rescheduled with us right away for the next weekend. Only 2 guys and they moved my one bedroom apartment to an upstairs apartment in an hour and 15 minutes! Professional, hardworking, and fast! What more could you ask for from movers. I will definitely recommend them to my friends and family! Thank you Packed!!!

Dream movers was very quick responding to our request. We agreed to move Saturday Feb 1st. Confirmed on Friday 31st. On the day of the move they didn’t show up so I called around 8:30 got a message back saying cannot talk right now. About 1/2 hour a lady called me saying they had to swap out a truck and won’t be able to make it until 11am. Got a text from owner saying their crew work late that night so that is why they couldn’t make it. Didn’t receive any phone call saying there was a problem I would have understood. Things happen but two stories didn’t match. The reason I gave three is because of responsiveness of my request. It would be 1 if I had to rate him on punctuality. I had to hire another company on spot because we had everything ready and in middle of the house. Bad experience..

When moving the worker were very nice. When delivering the furniture to the new address they put a huge scratch on one of the hardwood doors. Since I signed a contract that they are not responsible for broken items I still feel that the door should be repaired by them. I didn't report this to them only called because the hardware to my bedroom set is missing.
