While I've only had two guitar lessons, I can already tell Scottie will help me achieve my goals faster than I thought I would be able to. He has been really flexible with my crazy schedule. I highly recommend working with him :)
My goal is to teach a little differently and more personally than what can be found at a typical music store. I learned by combining traditional training on trumpet in high school and junior college, playing guitar along with recordings, and picking up various lesson books. In other words, I scooped up the resources I could find, and tried to apply them the best I could. I was recently motivated to share how I learned, after seeing a great bass player, Victor Wooten, speak about music and learning music. He likes to parallel music with language. He points out that we learn to speak long before we learn how to read or write or learn the rules of grammar and suggests that we can approach playing music in a similar way. We start by speaking, by conversing with experienced talkers, without understanding reading, writing, or grammar. Then, we fortify that experience by learning grammar (to make sure our message is clear and understood), and reading and writing (to make sure that we can share our message with others). At the same time, I was sad to hear about my daughter's friends quitting their band instruments, mostly because they were bored with the way they were taught. I honestly believe that like most things, we teach to the masses knowing full well that what reaches one student does not necessarily reach another. Some students get bogged down in the academic, before they experience the joy of creating music and gain the desire to understand the academic part. My goal is to reach those potential musical giants by inspiring them to learn more of the musical academics. Lessons are intended to be 30 minutes per week. Because I am about finding the right formula for your learning, I am not averse to trying alternative plans. Lessons are intended to be taught out of our home, near the corner of Liberty and Eola Roads in Aurora. That said, I am willing to teach at the student's home, as it sometimes creates a more comfortable/safe place to learn. My initial meeting with students is at no charge, to get a chance to evaluate how good our chemistry is, and what path we might want to take. After that, lessons will be $25 per half-hour at my home. The traveling rate will depend on your location. Just call or email me, and I will send a policy book and a brief survey. I believe that teaching is only successful when there is a good, open dialogue between teacher and student, good chemistry and good communication. After I get your survey back, I like to set-up an initial first lesson/assessment at a proposed regular lesson time, where we can talk about a direction. Thanks again, Glenn Donaldson U Rock Music Lessons
I've been taking guitar lessons from Matt for the past 4 months and I highly recommend him for many reasons. I like the convenience of him coming to my home. He grew up in Downers Grove and I in LaGrange. He attended the same high school as me. He's local so I feel very comfortable with him coming to my home. He's very patient and has never been late or canceled a lesson. But most importantly. If your serious about learning how to play guitar then you are in luck because he is the real deal! I'm 56 years young and I've tried lessons before at music stores & with friends and quickly lost interest and got nowhere. Now I really believe I'm going to be a good guitar player in the near future and it's because I have the 'most excellent' guitar teacher Matt Engler! Thanks Matt!!!!!
He was a fantastic teacher with incredible talent and great enthusiasm about music and teaching it to others! I was classically trained in piano for 6 years and Josh's training opened up a whole new world of music and hidden talent that I didn't know was there! He started teaching me guitar and he is great at finding what would make learning something more enjoyable! He is super encouraging but pushes you to the potential he will see in you! He goes out of his way to find what it is that you really want to learn and then takes you step by step to get you to where that is! Again, he is an excellent teacher, and became a great friend, I highly recommend him!

I do not instruct on how to sight-read music. I teach how to play guitar. Unless, a person plans on being a classical musician, you do not need to be able to sight-read music. I do teach music theory, notation and tablature, which is a widely accepted way of learning songs and sharing ideas. My three basic areas of instructions are: * Fret board exercises * Scales, chords, songs * Music theory Every lesson generally involves all three areas.
