David has many years of experience and emphasized the positive aspects of my singing and helped me improve posture, breathing and my vocal range in just three sessiona. He was very encouraging and I looked forward to our singing lessons. He helped me have the confidence to sing a song for my husband on our wedding day.

Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.

My daughter takes voice lessons and participates in theater at Stacey De and Co. We couldn't be more thrilled with everyone there, from the professional front desk staff Bre, outstanding director Sean, absolutely irreplaceable Melissa, and of course the heart and soul of this great place Stacey. The time my daughter spends at Stacey De and Co. every week is her favorite time of her week. In a completely non-stressful, family-like environment, she is stretched to really push her limits, is taught life lessons like the value of hard work and the ability to accept constructive criticism/evaluation and then improve on those things, and so very much more. She leaves every lesson and rehearsal a little more confident, learned, and determined to succeed...all in an environment of happiness, laughter, encouragement. I don't know what else one could look for in a fine arts school. My daughter and I both love it here.

I am an adult student who began lessons with Elif many years after my initial childhood lessons. It has been a wonderful experience in every way. She is teaching me not only how to play the instrument but musical theory as well which I appreciate as an adult learner. I highly recommend Elif for any adult who has been thinking of learning (or returning to) the piano!

Michele is very personable, patient and just flat out awesome to work with! I'd been meaning to take singing lessons for some time and finally got around to doing it. I've played music for years and studied Jazz/Classical guitar in college and could recognize right away that Michele is a true talent and knows what she's doing. By the end of the introductory class I knew I'd found the right teacher to help me develop my ear and my voice.

I love working with Paul! I've been studying guitar and electric bass with him for over two years now. The growth I've experienced as a musician has been tremendous, and we have a blast together during lessons. He's funny, laid back, patient, and super smart (REALLY knows his stuff). You can tell you're working with a professional musician here. I love jamming together, our weekly lessons are the highlight of my week.

I have been taking lessons from Dan for more than two and a half years and it something I look forward to every week. Aside from being a great teacher, he is fun, understanding and very talented. He takes the time to help you understand the structure of what you are learning without over burdening you with theory. He is also really interested in making sure you are enjoying playing (that is the point) and getting out of it exactly what you want. Any time I have a request (no matter how absurd) of a song to learn, Dan takes the time to find a good arrangement at my level and teaches it to me. It is really nice having that flexibility and personal investment in my lessons. In just two and a half years, I went from playing no to guitar to be comfortable jamming with my friends while also developing my classical guitar playing skills. His musical interests are vast; from beautiful classical pieces to classic rock solos to movie soundtracks (he loves Storybook Love from the Princess Bride). This blend of genres and talents truly sets Dan a part and I would encourage anyone looking to finally learn the guitar to sign up for lessons with Dan.

He taught my 10yr old daughter piano. She enjoyed the lessons and always looked forward to attending. We asked Shane to prepare and focus her lessons on getting into a specialized arts middle and high school. This school lets in 13 kids each 6th grade year, and they have hundreds of applicants audition. Our child audition and was accepted. Near the audition time, Shane accommodated extra lessons, moved normal lesson times, and did whatever was necessary to ensure she got was she needed to audition. There is no doubt that without him, our daughter wouldn't have been accepted. He also accommodated teaching me guitar before my daughter's session time. I felt like I was able to play the guitar after our first lesson. Anyone looking for lessons would be extremely happy learning from Shane.

Alexsandra Hsiao is one of the very best Graduate Assistants ever to study at Northern Illinois University, as a teacher, accompanist, and musician. Her performances are superb musically and technically. As a teacher, she received the highest evaluations from students and faculty. She is knowledgeable, patient, cooperative, completely reliable, kind, and caring. Her experience extends from children through adult teaching success. She has adjudicated competitions with me and performed with the very best musicians in good collaboration. I give her my highest recommendation; you could not find a better teacher! As a singer I was not breathing properly and Jill brought out the best in me. I have been able to sing much more effectively as a result of her instruction. Phrasing was always an issue because I had poor breath support and after only a few lessons I was singing like a pro.

I liked to apologize. I mistakenly messaged you by mistake. I do appreciate your quick response. I would love to take music lessons but I am no longer in the state. I have a granddaughter now and I left her my piano she’ll be 5 next April. I don’t know when like them to begin so just let me know and and I’ll contact you when you give us the green light. Thank you again so much.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What can you do with a first aid certificate?

People with a first aid certificate are trained to respond quickly and appropriately in life-threatening situations. Although a first aid certificate alone isn’t enough to secure a job, it can make you more attractive to certain types of potential employers. When you have a first aid certificate, you’ve proved that you know how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and handle emergency situations like choking, heavy bleeding, a heart attack or stroke, or anaphylaxis. Most parents prefer babysitters and lifeguards with first aid certification. Many professionals, especially those who work with children, are required to have first aid training, including teachers, coaches, counselors and therapists, firefighters, and social workers. In addition to adult and pediatric first aid plus CPR and AED courses, you can take first aid training specifically designed for babysitting and child care, for health care settings, and for swimming and water safety situations..
