Giulia was a fantastic teacher. She was always extremely accommodating to my schedule and was open to last minute changes. All the lessons were fantastically taught and extremely tailored for my own needs. We would always begin with what I'd like to review that day and then delve into conversation about it. She was great with explaining both grammar and the nuances in the language that only a native speaker would be able to identify. I would highly recommend Giulia as a tutor for any level of Italian!

Laura is very proficient with coaching English as a second language. She will teach you the skills to interact with people (e.g.: in your line of business when you are in their country) who speak other languages. The skills include learning to be comfortable with the second language, and not just with the words themselves.

Hi! I am Irina V. Nikitina, Associate Professor at the School of Interpreting and Translation of the State Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Extensively working in the field of translation and interpreting, I have engaged Marina Sokolova in many translation projects as a freelance translator and editor in both Russian and English. Marina has excellent qualifications required for the job. With MA in Second Language Studies (USA) and English Language Pedagogy (UK), as well as such well-established certificates as CELTA (Cambridge English Language Teacher for Adults), Current Trends in Theory and Practice of Language Teaching, she makes a truly valuable contribution to a solid team of translators that I closely cooperate with. In every project Marina has been part of or has lead, she has demonstrated a set of qualities that are truly valuable for a professional: authentic and idiomatic language, broad outlooks, inquisitiveness, accuracy, commitment to deadlines, meticulousness, flexibility and responsiveness. Marina has deep knowledge and wide experience in the following areas: business correspondence, general documentation, academic, fiction. Her translations are always proofread and never require double check. I frequently address Marina to get her expert opinion on various linguistic matters both in Russian and English and find her approach to the job of translation and editing truly passionate.

Nicole empowers her students not only through proper vocal technique, but by teaching them to find meaning and context for each lyric and line. I began to study with Nicole after taking several years off of vocal lessons. She helped me to quickly locate placement and shape of the voice to enhance my sound. I was impressed with her knowledge of the instrument and the language.

We've had private lessons with Elina one semester (me, my wife and daughter). Although all of us had different levels of French language proficiency, Elina still was able to manage lessons to be interesting and useful for all of us. I liked her attitude - she was always on time and prepared for work. The only regret was that both Elina and we relocated and our collaboration ended.

Suzanne has been my daughter's tutor for the past ten years. She very quickly tapped into her strengths and interests to provide fun ways to improve her language arts skills. Suzanne's special education background, in addition to her patient and kind personality have made her an excellent teacher. My daughter has absolutely loved going to "tutoring" all these years!

As of June 20, 2016, I have had 3 lessons with Erika. All three have been different and challenging (but in a good way). What I really like about my experience with Erika is the interaction. She incorporates many different learning styles! She also is very accommodating, in which we meet at locations that are inconvenient for me. She is punctual and comes prepared. I have learned so much and I feel more confident in just 3 weeks. I feel more confident and I love how we incorporated spanish as much as possible. Even through our communication via text! Overall, very pleased with my experience.

Eric has helped me improve my writing skills throughout undergrad as a French minor and throughout my first year of law school! I feel comfortable going over my drafts with him because I know he will respectfully tell me how I can improve while helping me be as clear and concise as possible. Practicing French with him is both fun and informative. Whether it's singing traditional French songs together or having everyday conversations, his zest for languages has helped me keep my French alive!

I´ve only been working with Cristobal for a short time due to my work schedule, but I´m very comfortable now with speaking and reading Spanish. I really like his approach to teaching the language and his passion for it. He also has group meet ups so that you can enjoy speaking with others on your proficiency level and continue gaining confidence in your speaking ability.

If you are looking for a Spanish tutor look no further! Mr. Behling saved my son in his Freshman year of Spanish. My Son was literally flunking out of his Spanish class and was completely disgruntled. Mr Behling came around and not only did my son work up to a passing C in the class but left him with a genuine appreciation of foreign language and confidence. As a junior he has taken another Spanish class and is excelling! He gets A's and B's now! This is amazing for a child who had absolutely given up. He just needed someone to take the time and believe in him. Stephen has the patience of a saint and an incredible command of the language. Absolutely contact him first.

I worked at a junior high school with Kristy. She worked well with the students, she was professional and kind. She was well liked by both students and staff. She was a joy to work with.

    About

It was in my 6th grade introductory Spanish class, where I developed a great passion for the language. From the start of our very first lesson, my love for Spanish was automatic. Never did I anticipate how much of an impact this passion would have on my future not only as a student but also as an individual. Following my graduation from high school, I studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at the Cuauhnahuac Institute of Languages and Cultures for 3 weeks. While in Cuernavaca, I lived with a lovely host family, and therefore had the opportunity to advance my Spanish language skills even when not in the classroom. In college, I traveled to Lima, Peru, to study abroad for a full academic year. In Peru's capital, I was fortunate enough to live with two different host families and study at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, where I attended classes with Peruvian students. Although a tutor's academic background is important, I believe that the ability to be an effective listener is invaluable. For this reason, patience is my number one priority as a tutor. I hope to not only assist a student in learning a new language but also to ignite an enthusiasm for the subject, particularly for those whose difficulty with the language has caused anxiety or disinterest. Despite the fact that a tutor has the background knowledge, I will always see myself as a student, as there is always something new to learn! This makes teaching exciting and refreshing, as there is always something about the language to discover or rediscover. Please visit me on Wyzant to view my tutoring profile where you can find my Spanish certification, passed background check, and reasonable pricing.

    About

I was working as a French teacher in high school in Poland and then when I moved to Palatine, I found a great job as a French tutor in MX College. I loved this job because it gave me an opportunity to help students understand grammar rules and prepare them for exams, tests and presentations. I was helping them to prepare projects. I can work at all levels.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
