From the first phone conversation with Mike Watson I knew our evening was going to be great. He was very professional but so easy to work with. When the night came both Mike & Derek showed up with tools in hand and ready to entertain. Our friends were very impressed as were my husband and I. Mike & Derek were fun and invited us to test taste what they were preparing. We all discussed restaurants and downtown Chicago. Theyre background experience is just so off the charts. Who wouldn't want these two in their home cooking for them. Price was very reasonable and the food was outstanding. Good time was had by all and I'd definitely hire them again. Thanks Mike & Derek for making my lifetime wish such an enjoyable one. Patti Limbach

Sorry about being a little late to review, but Carol is outstanding. We used Carol to prep and cook for my son and his wife's baby shower at our home. Carol came to the house the day before and did the prep work and cooked for 70+ people on the day of the shower. She was punctual, professional and efficient. We would recommend her and cannot wait for our next event to use her again.

My husband and I hired Tracy to prepare two dinners per week, to be dropped of at our River Forest home. Her recipes are outstanding and the food is very fresh and seasonal. The meals include a salad w/homemade dressing, along with the main course and different side dishes. Plus, Tracy is an extremely nice person who was on time, with all the items and directions clearly labeled. We were very impressed and will definitely call her again.

Chef Frank was very professional and quick to respond to all queries. He was flexible in scheduling and location and considerate given that we were in the middle of moving houses. The lesson was a birthday present for my 9 year old daughter and he made it an event to remember. I would highly recommend Chef Frank for cooking/baking lessons.

We hired Girl and the Kitchen for a small party. The food was amazing, service was great and they cleaned up the kitchen after. Also for those that enjoy cooking or want to learn, the chefs are more than happy to share their knowledge.

My family has loved getting meals from Carla’s Fresh! She has always been super accommodating with special requests too. The meals have been delicious and getting her meals weekly has made a huge impact on our family (much less stress/ time I needed to spend cooking). Portions are typically very generous. The food is prepared well and not too heavily salted- which is great! Communicating with Carla has been easy and I recommend using her services!! Favorite meals for my family included her stuffed peppers, various lasagnas, chicken cutlets, and beef with string bean/broccoli stir fry. Yum!!

Sandra has cooked for me twice and I can tell you, this woman knows her craft well! I am impressed by each opportunity I have had to taste her food. My first meal was a delicious collection of delectable ham, smoked turkey collard greens, corn bread, mac and cheese. I was in heaven. The ham was perfectly balanced (not overly salty), the collard greens had the right touch of smokey goodness with delightful chunks of turnkey meat and the mac and cheese...wow! Nice crispy baked goodness with smooth rich and creamy cheese goodness. The corn bread was the topper. I had to share with a friend so they could taste but then immediately thought, "I'll have to get more!" The second meal was a delicious spaghetti dish with garlic bread and a delicious salad. Wow again! The meat was in generous form here - a mix of quality ground beef and Italian sausage. I was in heaven! The sauce was delightfully balanced- flavorful and zesty but again, not salty! The garlic bread! I had to ask her how she made it because it was infused with flavor. Simply but delectable! The salad was not your lettuce and a few veggies affair. It was kale-based with chunks of apple, tomato, onion and many other favorites of mine. Truly, a dish that could be so bland and boring turned out to be another delight. Sandra asked me what I liked prior to cooking and did she deliver. Her use of spices is amazing. I keep going back to balanced and it is true. The flavor profile was amazingly great! I highly recommend Sandra. Not only does she deliver on the promise of making tasty food from the heart, she is a great teacher (she explained to me how to make the garlic bread her way) and she's a quality person. A delight on all fronts!

Stephanie was absolutely phenomenal! I had wanted an in home cooking lesson for a friends birthday and we made the French menu! Food was amazing! Stephanie had personality and was really fun to work with. From doing these events in the past I was expecting a mess and a long process but she made everything go very smooth and cleaned throughout! I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend her if you want amazing food, guidance and company! Best one on the app!

We used her services for my birthday party a few months ago. I was overwhelmed and indecisive about the direction. Chef Jacqueline went above and beyond my expectations. She even had excellent event planning tips that weren't related to cooking that I've implemented in my smaller gatherings. Thank you again.

Let me set the stage for you: It was crunch time. I had an expected 60 or so guests to arrive at a work function. We didn't have much time to plan either. I knew that I wanted to have all different types of food. I knew I needed to have someone versatile in cooking techniques and was also able to do some sweets. In the past, I have done small catering orders through Marlo and it went beautifully. I called her to see if she could bail me out on such short notice (A week). Marlo saves the day again! She put my worries at ease by helping me create a menu to what I wanted for the event with all the specifications. I like to use her because she does Filipino, Spanish, American, and I bet she could do it all! To say the least, we were beyond impressed with the food was delicious and fresh. You can really tell she used quality ingredients. She arrived on time and promptly got to work on helping me set up the dishes to be serve-ready. I enjoy her creativeness and multifaceted skills in the culinary arts. It isn’t just that her food and pastries are delicious; it’s that she puts her own twist into the mix to elevate otherwise ordinary food. We also ordered her desserts. I recommend you get the Mamon (Filipino Sponge Cake- She makes it individually wrapped) and Tiramisu! We also ordered decorated cake pops as giveaways (which were a hit!). The decadent flavor of the Mamon really shows her skill in baking as well. The pricing was below what I have paid for catering orders half of the size with others, which made expensing this order easy on my pocket. Her service was seamless from beginning to end. Marlo took a great deal of worry off my shoulders. She is professional and friendly. I enjoy her catering service and would recommend her to all my friends who have also had the same great service. I plan to continue to use her for any and all of my future catering needs. I couldn't be more grateful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
