Before I met Konrad, I struggled mightily with trying to lose weight and improve my fitness. I tried different diets, none of them worked. Tried different one size fits all exercise programs, they were too difficult, and I ended up getting hurt. After meeting Konrad, however, all of that changed. The first thing I noticed was how important it was to him that I met my goals, and that he would do whatever he could to help. Right away, I was impressed that Konrad is in graduate school at Northwestern to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy, as well as his top line health and fitness certifications, so I knew he would be the perfect person to help me out. As my trainer, Konrad developed a diet plan for me that was easy to follow and focused on eating wholesome, nutritious foods. Protein and produce, less ingredients, less processed foods. Secondly, I was impressed at the breadth of knowledge Konrad had as he led me through different workouts. His workouts were designed to target specific muscle groups, in order to strengthen my whole body and improve my functional fitness. I could tell that he actually paid attention to my fitness level, as each subsequent workout continued to challenge me, ensuring my progress. His workouts are always different and exciting, and I left each session feeling like I had accomplished something. He was also very attentive and easy to talk to, he knows so much about how the body actually works! Any question I asked him, he provided an easy to understand answer, without getting too much into the science behind it-a true indicator that he knows his craft! Between the diet and the training I did with Konrad, I managed to lose 30 pounds in 6 months and I am now pain free! I would highly recommend Konrad and his team at Chitown Trainer for any health related needs. He's a true professional, and I would imagine there aren't many other places out there that do as good a job as Chitown Trainer.

I started working with Weightloss Transformation a little over a year ago. I have lost 30lbs and reached a healthy weight, but more importantly have found new energy and improved mindset from working out regularly. Patrick is a master motivator and lives what he preaches. He takes the success of his clients to heart and you will not find a more dedicated, professional and effective personal home fitness training company to work with. I feel fortunate to have found this company and would give them my highest recommendation.

This has been the first time for me hiring a personal trainer and I am extremely happy I found JT. When I went on Thumbtack, I was mostly looking for a trainer to help with motivation, form, and guidance with daily nutrition. JT is very down to earth, knowledgable, and patient especially when teaching me new moves and making sure I have the correct form. I have been training with JT for the past 2.5 months and it's amazing how far I have come and how much stronger I am overall after working with him. Thanks JT! :)

Shawn was amazing. His knowledge of nutrition coupled with his exercise training helped me better understand what I needed to do to live a healthier life. After working with him for three months my cholesterol lowered to manageable numbers, my chronic aches and pains went away and I lost twenty-six pounds.

I was doing high intensity interval training, which caused serious injuries to my knee and shoulder, so I wanted to get back into full body resistance training and cardio. After reading reviews, I chose Dan. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. He's very smart, thoughtful, and incredibly enthusiastic. He spends a great deal of time tracking your numbers so that there is genuine accountability as to the extent of your progress. After I saw the orthopedist about my shoulder and went to physical therapy, Dan took the recommended physical therapy exercises and integrated them directly into my workouts. Very creative; very cool. He's easy to communicate by text or email, and incredibly responsive. He's also very knowledgeable about the Chicago performing arts scene, which I enjoy discussing with him. Bottom line: I'm getting stronger; feeling more fit and confident; and not getting injured. Dan's been great.

I worked with John approx 2-3x/month over a 6 month period and accomplished everything that we set out to do - I lost weight, gained muscle tone, increased my cardio fitness (I was training to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro), and he made sure that I would leave our sessions having a plan and the knowledge to work out consistently on my own. John was extremely flexible, even if it was minutes before the session. When he was working out with you- he gave you all his attention - he was never on the phone working, texting, or seeming uninterested. Our sessions were fun, varied, and he pushed me the right amount. John is great trainer and just a really good person. I unfortunately moved away from the city, otherwise I'd be working with him still!

I love training with Tricia! She has been training me for about 4 months now and I'm VERY happy with the results. I've lost inches and weight, and I even have toned muscles that I never had before! I've lost weight in the past doing Weight Watchers, but I never did any strength training like this! I can do "REAL" push-ups now instead of having to be on my knees! I feel great and know I would not have pushed myself to get here without Tricia. I would recommend her to anyone!

I met Jenny about 7-8 months ago when she joined the HIIT training gym I had recently joined. Jenny has amazing knowledge about everything when it comes to working out & nutrition. I was VERY intimidated trying HIIT training but Jenny makes you feel comfortable while also pushing you to jump the next hurdle in your fitness journey. And she listens!! Sometimes I push myself too much all week & I at walk into my last class of the week and ask to just concentrate on my trouble areas and we DO!! I've gone from a size 12 to size 4/6 in less than 9 months- she's the best!!

She’s really good with meal plans. She makes you feel comfortable, but at the same time motivates you to work hard during training! Her plans for your workouts are made according to your ability and increase at your own pace. Great training time options as well. She trains you hard, but also make sure of your safety and injuries free! She knows a varieties of excercises, so you would never get bored of the samething every session. You will see results with her!!

From the moment I met Alex , I knew he was a person that could help me achieve new goals and also the one that would help change my life for the better. I started training with Alex last April. During the last 6 months I have been challenged and pushed by Alex, and he has taught me a great deal. He makes working out fun and inspires me to reach new goals. I have been very impressed by Alex's passion to help clients, his knowledge, and his ability to connect with his clients. Alex is very caring and attentive to what each client needs, what their limits are, and how far he can push them. He encourages and motivates me to do better, and yet he knows how much I am capable of. He deserves 5 out of 5 stars from me. I plan to continue to work with Alex.

Steve is a very hard working professional. He always pushed to get the best he could out of me. He also was very personable with a fun personality. He always made sure things were fun even though we were also serious about the work at hand. I always looked forward to training days. Highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
