After dealing with so many unprofessional companies, it was a relief to finally work with honest and hard working people. We hired Andrean for laminate installation. He projected a two day project and was reasonably priced. To our surprise him and his guys finished the job in one day and they did a great job. Very professional the whole time even when they ran into a small snag. We would definitely Trust Flooring again in the future.

Chano and his team installed new laminate floors throughout our home, painted all our trim and installed new doors. He even fixed an odd door frame in our master bath, which icluded building out the wall a bit and installing new frame. It was all quite a process and took us out of the home for a good two weeks or so, but in all fairness, it was a big job. The workmanship and attention to detail was top notch, and if there was ever anything I didn't quite like or wanted fixed, there were no questions or pushback. Chano and his team really want their customers to be satisfied with the end results, and we are very much!! We even ended up having to rebuild the stairs because carpeting had really damaged the wood, and although it cost us a bit more, the results were great! He really worked with us on many levels, including price and he always offered fair opinions on construction and where to spend money or where we could save. A lot of contractors run pretty shady and you never know who you can trust, so I'm very happy we found A Plus Decorating, because we never had to worry. I highly recommend Chano and his team and will definitely use them in the future!

Peter was incredible from start to finish. We purchased a new home and the stairs were not level. I put in my Thumbtack request on Saturday, Peter came out Sunday for the estimate, and he completed the job on Thursday! In addition, the night before he was scheduled to work, I was notified by our carpet installers that the hardwood floors in a hallway needed to be removed. I immediately asked Peter if this was something he could complete, and he said he could do it. He removed the flooring and hauled it away in addition to the original job and got everything done in one day! You will not be disappointed if you go with Studio Floors and Peter. He is professional, friendly, hardworking, and although he gets the job done fast he pays very close attention to detail.

Radu did a great job restoring a red oak floor that had not been maintained for over 60 years. Through his expertise in wood flooring and floor refinishing techniques, he advised knowledgeably in selecting stain color and worked tirelessly to address gouges and other anomalies in the original flooring. He and his team were exceptionally professional and courteous throughout the process. As I finish a multi-year rehabilitation of the entire house, visitors comment first and most emphatically about the hardwood floor.

Mike installed laminate flooring throughout the main level of our townhome including the kitchen, dining room and great room. The entire job only took him one day to complete. He was thorough and extremely neat. It's been great having the laminate flooring since we have two pets which makes any clean-up fast and easy. We plan on using Mike whenever we move into our next home, especially, if there aren't hardward floors!

Sherman Flooring installed wood floors in my bedrooms. They completed the installation and finishing of the floors on time. Neal spent time discussing my color choices and finishes before completing the job. I expected to have a huge mess when they were done. This was not the case at all! I appreciated the work and would recommend them to my friends.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

Kevin is ripping the old & nasty carpeting in up in my; family room, hallway, bedroom. He's also ripping old & worn out laminate flooring in my kitchen & dinnette area. He's laying brand new laminate flooring in my kitchen, dinette area, family room, laundry room, bedroom, hallway & closets. My job is not fully completed just yet but so far Kevin is doing an AMAZING JOB!!! The reason I am choosing to still submit a review prior to full completion is because I absolutely have, 100% faith & confidence in Kevin's abilities, craftsmanship, professionalism, communication but most importantly, his word=that he'll complete my laminate flooring job/project in the time grand we discussed & agreed to & last but not least; just as well as he started the job.

The entire experience from coming to measure the space, bringing samples of the flooring to the install was great! We had a couple of rooms that had carpet in them that we wanted wripped out and have hardwood laminate installed to match the rest of the condo. The guys went above and beyond to make sure that all of the transitions and capping of the upstairs area were done perfectly. Definitely recommend!

We initially contracted with Tom to remodel two bathrooms and install tile floor throughout our downstairs family room, hall and son's downstairs bedroom. Tom was doing such a great job so we began to trust his work the more we saw getting done. We then also asked him to remove wood paneling, install drywall, paint our entire lower level, add can lighting and install solid core doors throughout our house. We are thrilled with the finished product. He works faster alone then other contractors do with entire crews! Great work at a reasonable price.

Ron did a vinyl plank flooring job for us. He was quick to provide a quote for us and offered to pick up our flooring materials for us. We have had a different company do a vinyl floor install for us and Ron’ work quality, and professionalism blew them out of the water. We are very happy with the work he did and we would definitely recommend him to anyone.

Signature owner, Larry was an excellent communicator. He kept in contact every step of the way, explaining each aspect of the project. He also communicated when and what time he would be working on the project as it required four days to complete. Our project consisted of taking down an old ceiling and replacing framework and supporting old joists, installation of drywall, mudding, sanding, etc.. It turned out beautifully and we are very satisfied with his work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
